Updating the exterior of rambling rancher, shutters or no shutters?

  • We re getting new white windows installed on our home and thought now would be a good time to update the exterior. We need help on the paint colors and were thinking of replacing the brick apron with a stone material. Everyone says loose the shutters but I was thinking of updating them to a board and batten style because they add a third color and some character. I'm open to the idea of getting rid of them if there is another way to add some character. Shutters (even ones that look non-functional) are popular in these old Californian neighborhoods. Sometimes people get rid of them and the house looks very boring. Ours is a very long house and I feel it needs some sort of character or interesting feature. In addition to the new windows being white, the two ranch style windows will be 4" taller and the arched window will become a rectangular window and it will be 4" shorter. Any ideas would be appreciated-
