Paint Design Dilemma

Color selection help for exterior doors and shutters on red brick

Would like to update the exterior without painting the brick. We have the main brick house and a detached garage with vinyl siding which sits off the left rear. We are replacing the front door and updating all the exterior lighting and landscaping Already have someone to help with landscape but need help with style selection for front door and color selection for trim/doors/shutters.

Q: Would you paint both garage doors and the front door the same color? Or do a wood stain front door? What about the shutters? (Would love to remove the shutters but don't think that is an option.)

Regarding door style, I would choose one that mimics the lites/glass in your windows. A few examples...

Carriage lights sound nice for the detached garage. A door with windows would also be nice. I like the white. White or black for the front door would work, but white would give it more presence. Paint the downspouts to blend with the brick. Your brick with some white and black is classic and nice, like this...

Be sure the new porch lights are large enough; should be 1/3 of the door's height. Consider brass for some brightness. You could add a brass knocker, kickplate and a brass mailbox too. Looks like the drive could use a pressure washing. I don't think it would hurt to paint the garage door and front door the same. The garage is tucked away enough that it could use something to tie it into the house.

Well congratulations on your first house! That is so exciting, and I know when it comes time to make the big, long-term decisions it can also be a bit daunting. Without seeing your house, I also lean toward darker colors for the door / shutters, like meowzer. I like black and that deep forest green which is almost black. If you are planning on siding in a dark grey, the black could work quite well with both (red brick / dark grey). Once you read the how-to, posting pics is pretty easy, and we look forward to seeing your house!

Hi Cindy, the brick is "Old Orleans" by Cherokee brick. Its a great looking brick with lots of character. The mortar was rubbed over the brick to achieve the aged look. I put the same post in the home decorating forum with a couple more up close pictures if you care to see any more of this brick.

sage greens work well, the shutters could go, or be replaced a bit larger. the front door needs to be a pop since its set back, maybe a blue tone. soft yellow trim is nice with this combo

Is the paint color an off white (cream)? If so, you color options are basically endless, depending what color your roof is or if you have any brick or stone on the house. When choosing paint colors for my house a couple of years ago, I kept in mind the color of stone on the front of my house, the brick on my chimney color, and my green roof. I then went to Behr's website and played with color combinations and found something that both my husband and I agreed on. With the color of your house in mind and what looks like a dark roof, maybe black, there are so many color combinations you could go with. Here are some photos for inspiration: I absolutely love the colors on this house. More importantly--What colors do you and your family love? Next is a photo of my house since I could not find any other photos that would suit your house on Houzz. I chose paints from Behr Marquee and the house color is Taupe Tease, trim is Superior Blue (my husband's favorite color), and the doors are Fire Cracker Red (my favorite color): All 3 colors work well together and work with the roof, brick, and stone colors as well. I also chose colors that no one else had in our neighborhood.
