Our finished kitchen...now my husband can relax!

I have been snooping around here since the beginning of our planning, now a year later we are finished. The information I gained here was irreplaceable. It's easier to shop around for good deals when you're knowledgeable!

We started with cabinets that couldn't fit a box of cereal, carpet and way to much z-brick and now we have a kitchen that is so very practical for us. We just love it.

Our cabinets were unfinished oak that we finished in the garage. Slide out shelves. Under mount sink, which is wonderful when is comes to cleaning off the counters. New venetian gold granite with Ikea butcher block counter tops. Laminate wood flooring. Tiled back splash with glass accent. And my favorite...A Vac-pan--we don't have central vac so we bought a small rv central vac and installed it up under the sink!

Our budget was low so I didn't get a new dishwasher or range yet, but my granite is great. I never understood the desire to set a hot pan on the counter top but I love that I can now!

I recently had to replace my dishwasher. The old one was SS but the top part, the control panel was black which I liked simply because it didn't show every fingerprint. I did not have time to order one and wait a week or two because I was having surgery in 3 days so I had to pick from what was in stock at my store of choice, Lowe's. Part of the reason I chose the one I did is because of the handle. I noticed tons of finger prints on and under the handles of the SS models in the store, it seemed like just reaching for the handle your fingers would touch the front of the unit because the handle was so close to it. I found one that the front of the unit was actually clean, no finger prints at all!... It was a Frigidaire. The handle curves out away from the washer, so it is actually all you touch when opening it. I did do some online research about this model and it had good reviews. It has other great features such as being able to easily raise and lower the top rack. I am actually very happy with this dishwasher, it does a great job and it is so quiet not only can you carry on a conversation standing beside it, you can carry on a whispering conversation. I had my surgery 3 weeks ago and I can honestly say the front of the dishwasher is spotless and I have not had to wipe it off at all. The handle is the only thing that I have had to wipe down. I'm going to keep this in mind when I need a new fridge too. My old dishwasher was 11 years old and would only come on if I banged and banged on the control panel, then it would kick on but when I would bang on it the knob would fly across the room... my husband thought that was perfectly fine, not a problem at all, just keep using it... until the knob nearly put the dogs eye out when it flew across the room...

I am having the same problem , i know my husband for 7 years but married a year and half my son was 7 when we met, he decided to call him daddy but he was okay and he started treating my son badly, i left in 2019 for him to get help, he did and we got married in 2020 he was good to my son in the entire 2020 till our marriage in dec 2020 my son got on very well with him then we moved into a house he bought and then the nonsense started he shows no love and reprimands my son all the time and we have to walk on egg shells with him, he treats my son badly and says i dont shout at my son or reprimands him which i always do and give him the rope to discipline him, but nothing my son does or say is right in his eyes, i left in may 2022 and he still is picking on my son ,but even he did go for counselling but nothing has changed i cannot expose my son to this, because i choose my son all the time, and i will always, my son is 12 now, and he does not want to ever see my husband again and he said he will never ever call him dad he has damaged my child and therefore i will never go back, he is toxic and a narcissist, he has uprooted my son and my life so many times and i have had enough and i am done, i love my child too much to allow him to treat him this way, i love my husband as well, but at the end what is the sense in having a house but not a home.My son is my life and i will not allow anyone to treat him that way, i dont deny my son does things and is naughty as well, but to be treated like you always wrong is not on, my son talked about suicide as well, so that we can be happy and that pushed me over the edge,i wont lose my child to a man, i also have cancer and he is the one that is aggravating my cancer because i stress so much what is he doing to my son, we are emotionally abused by this man, he walked away from 2 marriages because of the children and by the way it way his own so there is no way he will tolerate mine. any advise for me

Oh people I feel your pain. Here I am, awake again at 2am, stressing about windows, when the next phone call will be coming about the kitchen which we put a deposit on last year and the kitchen appliances which were bought in September and are still at the store (they are expecting them to be picked up by Easter). He is a carpenter and 5 years ago it was agreed our house would take priority over other jobs as finally our mortgage was down to almost nothing and I work full time. That never happened. Some people still got their jobs done, quite a lot of fishing happened and he earned sweet FA to top it off, which has caused a lot of resentment on my behalf as we have lived in the ugliest house on the street for 17 of the 20 years we’ve been here. 2 years ago I took long service leave as I thought if I was there helping/supporting him things might happen. LOL. He decided to take a job on a boat with a mate and bloody COVID happened literally a week in. With lockdowns and the QLD border closure we ended up at a standstill. Trouble is, since the border opened he still hasn’t made any effort to order windows or flooring and we can’t install the kitchen until they are in place. He even told me I should ring the window people which REALLY pissed me off as I already work 40+ hours a week and have no idea what to tell them. I just want to scream. Our eldest son has literally no respect for him because of his Reno ADD and the tension in the house is awful. We are living with a cheap Kmart benchtop oven, single hot plate and a metre of free bench space so cooking is a nightmare and our dining table is in our 5 x 5m lounge room with 2 couches & tv. It’s just so frustrating coming home from working my ass off all day to find that he’s been watching Netflix or shows he’s recorded instead of picking up the goddam phone and calling a window rep. I’m torn between staying and hoping he pulls his finger out as he said he wants it done by his 50th (May) or moving out and throwing our reno money away into renting somewhere for myself for the sake of my sanity. Nini - on your first post, you said you'd do a separate post about honed and polished marble. Pros and cons to both. Have you done that and if not, would you do one or send me an email. We have chosen statuetto white marble for our island and I plan to go with honed (after testing polished). I'd like to hear your experiences. Thanks!

Congratulations on a job well done! I really like how your finished off the tile backsplash on the side wall. Another idea I'll have to put in the back of my brain.

In all honesty when doing the backsplash we realized we were going to have to cut 1 inch of tile along the whole kitchen or be an inch short of going all the way up to the cabinets. The 1" glass strip was the fix (we bought 2 12x12 mosaics and cut them into strips).

I like the lighting with the pulls and I like the new placement of the pulls. What a great space for you and your young kids to create lots of memories.

Wow! It looks wonderful. You did a very nice job. it certainly improved the flow and storage. The range and DW look fine. I am not one to get rid of stuff just because. We tend to use things until they completely fail and the range and DW don't look out of place. I hope you enjoy your new space for many years!

Wow, that was a *lot* of z-brick! We have that painted-white stuff as our kitchen backsplash, and it drives me crazy -- it's so hard to clean! I'm sure you're glad to be rid of it. Was it hard to remove?

And...what happened to that door near the stove? Did you close up that wall and put a window in? What a great idea...gives you a ton of counterspace next to the stove.

Great work! I love your orange canisters...for the longest time, I really wanted an orange teapot. Never got one...maybe some day!

I had z brick in my kitchen. Quite a few years ago I spent months taking it down and sanding the glue. I still needed to put up wall paper on the walls to cover the defects, but it looked 100 times better than the brick.

Everyone told me I was crazy to just demo the walls and have new drywall installed. I couldn't afford it at the time, so I tackled it brick by brick, a little each night till it was done.
