I have just ordered a supply of batiks for GS2 wedding quilt, and I was wondering about pre-washing.

So I Googled for that info.

One of the first hits was this site. A thread from Aug. 2008. All my questions answered.

Dotty, next time you think about using peat moss...do a simple test. Put some peat moss into a bucket...say a couple gallon size...and pour into it some hot water. Stir. Do another bucket but this time use cold water...try to stir. You will quickly learn that peat moss becomes very effectively wetted when the temperature of water is a factor. Peat moss shrinks from cold water and readily absorbs it when warm. Compost....any compost that is made by the average home gardener, is an unknown factor. Since compost is what we put into it, it can be as different as night and day. One compost made by one owner, and another around the corner, can be like that. Composting material uses nitrogen to effect breakdown. You can help the pile to speed up with the addition of tossing in a cupful or two of lawn fertilizer once in a while. How you moisten your pile too can make a difference. It should never be wet...that might cause odours...but should be in a state where the moisture is aiding the bacteria to break down what you put into it. Certain materials though to make a difference. Grass clippings, spread out can increase the heat greatly. Leaves, chewed up, with hay or straw if you can get it, stripped newspaper and your kitchen scraps can add to such heat. Turning the pile as often as necessary is vital. That might be done weekly or bi-weekly...depending on how much you put into it. It is never a good idea to use "just" compost. Always mix it with the present soil...especially for new plants. If you don't trust your soil, then buy some topsoil/loam/...whatever... from the local nursery or garden center and mix that with your compost. Compost should be finished though. i.e. it should not be still in a state of unfinished decomposition. Where necessary, separate the finished from the stuff that is still being worked on. If this is till not what you have in mind, then you can buy commercially finished "composted cattle (or sheep) manure and use it mixed with your present soil. Soil for containers or hanging baskets should never be 'from the garden'. Containers should always use potting soil or potting mixes. This is designed for such use and allows the soil to drain well. Garden soil can be too compact, not draining well enough and can contain harmful pests or disease. Containerized soil MUST drain well. You are right in suggesting the pile didn't heat up sufficiently to kill the weed seeds. Most home composters do not really heat up sufficient to guarantee such effectiveness. So when it comes time to feed it, avoid using weeds that have come to or approaching going to seed. Otherwise weeds can indeed be part of the composting. The use of potting mixes, including peat moss and possibly even some sharp sand is comonly used for use such as what you describe. Sharp sand is the type that can be bought at any building supply store or nursery that labels it as such. Play sand, beach sand....should not ever be used for gardening purposes.

Hi Bill That is great! What kind of banana do you have? I have almost the same thing happening to me. My Indonesian variety was harvested last Sunday, and I am eating ripe bananas as we speaking. And yesterday, I noticed another bunch forming in the same variety. By the way, this is the strongest variety I have, took the freeze very well last year. Thanks for the replies. Paul, the ironic thing is that I was on Safari when I read your post and I couldn't click on your link. When I try to log in on Safari, I get a grey screen and nothing else. I had to get on Firefox to reply to this thread. I have a retina display screen on the MacBook, and Firefox looks horrible on it. Safari is (obviously) the optimized browser for this computer, although I have used Chrome too. I don't know how much I am willing to participate; it's a pain in the keester to have to switch browsers just to view links and post replies.

Glad you guys like it. Jeannespinnes - I will!I have the perfect spot on my hearth(when we don't have a fire!) for it and we always have a houseful for Thanksgiving. Yes, I'm sure it is scrapbook paper. Marylee - I, too, looked through many of her photos. She really does have some good stuff! The consensus seemed to be to pre-wash using Retayne or Synthrapol.
And since I did have a bleeding issue on the green Jacob's Ladder, I am more and more inclined to pre-wash.

Okay~now I'll say it--I'm a Prewasher-100% unless it is precut Bali pop / jelly roll or charms. I am so afraid of the bleeding, I don't pair the batiks with white or any solid light color unless I can prewash them. I will suggest that you throw in a square of white muslin, in addition to the color catchers, to see if the extra dye is going to actually dye the muslin.
Others don't have problems.......I don't ever want to after the quilt is made!
And yes, the Forum Members here are great!

This IS a great site. I feel like I am surrounded by friends here as well as knowledgeable quilters. People who won't look down on me because I rarely pre-wash! ;~))

I was thinking that myself last week when I posted about my finished quilt. Since I don't belong to a guild or group, the only notice or feedback I get is from DH, who thinks they are nice but let's face it, he's a guy. And other family members do get to see them occasionally but since none of them quilt they don't really get it. To get feedback about my work on this website is so special - not to mention the chance to see others' work and to get tips and good information. I am grateful for it.

I feel blessed to have found this forum and all the people I feel are my friends. I have found it a wonderful place to get honest opinions and objective thoughts. Even thought they arn't all the same they provide a great sounding board for ideas.
And Kate, I rarely pre-wash either but there are always exceptions and sometimes mistakes.

What I learned is...always prewash. (That's what my teacher friend told me!)

What I do, rarely prewash unless I'm suspicious of the fabric. It all came down to taking classes and needing just a couple more fabrics than I'd actually brought. Since you can't wash it at the store, I just got out of the habit.

I know it's best, but so is vacuuming daily and I don't do that either ;-)

Oh no! Are there other rules like that I should know about? Wait! Don't tell me! I'm happy in my non-vacuuming, non-pre-washing, non-dusting, non-weeding, non-sweeping up the dog & cat hair, non-baking-my-own-bread ignorance. All that stuff could cut into my sewing time!

When I first joined the guild, I had been quilting on my own for a couple of years but I was really getting into it and like most newbies, was spending a lot of time at the machine. At one meeting, a few new members were asked to introduce themselves and show some of their work. It happened that I had just finished one whole quilt and a top that month. So the dear soul who was doing the interview asked "Don't you ever do housework?" You mean I am supposed to do that too!!!

What a hoot!
I've have memories of visiting my Grandmother in Chisholm, Minn. All the ladies on the block had their homes cleaned and their front porches swept by about 9 a.m. and fresh banana bread on the table for coffee visiting. I thought the poor girl my age next door was practically enslaved because she had to mop the kitchen floor every day.
I know many of those women canned and baked the whole summer too, but I don't know if any of them were quilters.
Glad I didn't have to "measure up" in a small town like that. I've kinda noticed that cleaning house means I get no company, but leave a mess and here they come!
