Radiant Flooring under hardwood floors in kitchen

We are looking to remodel kitchen and I want to have wood floors. I would really like to have radiant flooring. Can radiant flooring be installed under wood floors???

Check out www.wideplankflooring.com They provide good info. We just installed radiant heat under pine boards ranging from 4 - 12 inches wide. All the info on the web advises against doing so, however we talked with people who have done it with no troubles. We are keeping our water temp. around 100 degrees. I think some of the horror stories probably had very hot water flowing through, like 180 degrees. The newer radiant heat systems run cooler water. The floors have been installed for 2 months now, the heat feels great and I haven't seen any signs of cupping, etc.

I put radiant heat under my wood floors and it works very well. The floor is just pine over wood joists and plywwod subfloor, and not engineered.. I did pay close attention to insulation, isolation, heating loops, tube spacing, loss calculations, all that good stuff. I get some seasonal gapping in the wood though frankly it's hard to notice, and it's not any different than what I got without radiant heat. The one thing I did regarding controls was to use both a floor sensor and a thermostat for each zone. The thermostat runs the system but if the floor heats up to a set temperature (I use 85 deg F) the system shuts off - that way the floor never gets hot enough to damage the wood, if it could damage the wood, which I'm not sure of. I've heard good things about the control system that funnycide mentions (water temp function of outside temp) but I get pretty good performance with my water at a constant temp - very comfortable and fuel efficient.

We have warmboard under oak flooring, not engineered wood. It is great - even heat. We did use quartersawn lumber rather than plain becauase it is much more resistant to expansion and contraction.

We have 2800 square feet of LVT throughout the first floor of our ranch house, bathrooms and kitchen included, and it is gorgeous. They were professionally installed; the subfloor was leveled so that there are no door transitions or height differences throughout, and it is a stunning look. Downstairs basement is engineered hardwood. If we ever need to redo the floors in the basement, it will be LVT. There is no going back; it is just too lovely and practical. The cork backing of the LVT makes the floors very comfortable underfoot, and they are very quiet. I considered tile with radiant heat until I spent a week in a beach condo with tile floors; they felt too hard under my feet.

This is the control for the floor. We now have it at 27.5 during the day and 25 overnight and it is warm when dressed appropriately (sweater, socks etc)… thank you for your help!

Sure you can. The best products are stuff like Warmboard. It allows you to put a subfloor down and then put any wood you would like right over the radiant subflooring.

My in-laws have radiant under wood. It's so nice in their freezing winters. They have a basement, which made it much easier to install the radiant system than it would be otherwise.

I have hydronic radiant under hardwood in about 95% of my house. The entry, kid's bath, and laundry are tiled.

Works better than fine.
