Can this awkward kitchen be saved?

Hello everyone,

I would like to get some thoughts on what we might do with our very awkward kitchen space. We have lived in our home for about a year and a half and love most of it, but the kitchen not so much. It has angled walls, doorways on almost every side and a big island in the middle that obstructs flow of function and people. Here are two photos:

We would like to start over from scratch. We had a kitchen designer in and this is his first proposal:

There are a number of things we like about the design - there are no upper cabinets on the counter with the cooktop and there is lots of space there for prep work. We like the new peninsula although it means we will no longer have space for a table in the kitchen (the table is missing from the photos above and it should be noted that the eating area is actually half an octagon ie the design is not quite accurate in that area). We would gain a pantry which we don't have now.

On the other hand, we have really major concern about the new walls that will jut into the room to accommodate the fridge, wall oven and pantry. It seems like it will make a huge visual, and physical, obstruction and if you're sitting at the peninsula I fear it will be like looking at Galley Kitchen A to the right and Galley Kitchen B to the left.

We would really appreciate any feedback or thoughts on alternatives. In the layout, the room to the right is our family room. There is a load-bearing wall between the kitchen and it (plus it is a step down from the kitchen to the family room). From the eating area there are doors to the deck. On the left hand side of the drawing is the opening to the dining room/living room, and at the bottom is the door to the front hall.

Thank you for any and all thoughts!
