what's our average age?

If those of you who don't mind disclosing your age would like to participate, I'm curious to know what our average age is. I believe we range from young twenties into the eighties, which puts me around the middle. I'm 52.

Cross-post what is the average builder/contractor's discount ?
Q

xoxosmom, generally speaking, the end user of a product pays the sales tax. In this case, that would either be you or your builder, *one* of you would likely own sales tax, the whole thing. Your contractor is likely paying sales tax on all of the other materials, there's no reason why appliances would be different. As weissman says, though, the rules are different everywhere. Here in Washington (state), for example, for new home construction, sales tax is paid on the entire price of the house (!) - on materials, the contractor's mark-up, everything - so you should feel lucky if you only have to pay it on the appliances. As far as contractor's discounts go, in building our house, I found them to be largely fictional - like a phony department store "sale", prices are marked up so they can be marked back down again. In the case of appliances, discounts from MSRP were marginal - say, 5-10%. We found the best strategy to find prices and then ask the dealer favored by the contractor to match them. So if Sears has exactly what you want, get a quote. Ask the independent dealer to match it. If they don't, take your business to Sears if you want but you'll need to balance price against possibly better service from the independent dealer.

Pecanpie, I feel for you trying to find your way in this. Not easy for you to be helpful and make suggestions, especially if MIL is "volatile". Yet a medical evaluation is so important, especially if the problem is an easy fix. That would be wonderful for all of you. Good advice to suggest DH talk with his Dad. And for you and DH to start some research. Your county may have a Department on Aging within its Human Services or Social Services division. If you can find the right person or office or agency, they should be able to give you a lot of information about what you can expect and what your options are now and later. Take "information sessions" and "talks" put out by private hospitals or private extended care systems with a grain of salt. Aging is becoming big business, and you don't need marketing of meds and programs disguised as helpful information. A whole other crucial and very dicey issue is whether your MIL has made any power of attorney for health care arrangements. DH and his sibs really, really, really need to find this out, and soon. MIL sounds lucid enough to still do this if she has not yet. Essentially, she goes on record with her wishes and who she designates to implement those wishes, if or when she can't make healthcare decisions for herself. Without this, her husband and/or her kids can't just step up and do what needs doing later. Every day families are shocked that a complicated court process becomes necessary because there is no HC-POA to activate. It makes absolutely no sense to families, and people suffer with their care delayed, but it is nonnegotiable reality in many states. Another reason to speak with your local governmental agency on aging. I realize I am bringing up yet another troubling and complicated dimension to this problem - but it is so important I feel I should. Young, old, healthy, sick, every one of us should make ourselves go on record with a HC-POA. It saves our loved ones a world of trouble if there comes a day we can't voice decisions ourselves. Not just in a Terry Schaivo type conflict either. Say my DH needs to enter assisted living or nursing care but he cannot give informed consent, I cannot consent for him even though I'm his wife. Only a lengthy court process can grant me authority to direct his healthcare - and even then a second court proceeding is necessary for any placement decision in my state. All averted with a simple piece of paper saying he's OK with me deciding for him. Easy with a HC-POA document, a mess without it. Keep talking to DH. Maybe you and he can prepare your own HC-POA's (or update ones you have done) and chat up the process with the parents as way to open communication... (((Cyber hugs to you for strength)))

What is the average American looking for in a kitchen?
Q
Comments (51)
Well, it depends on price point. I think the only feature that is absolutely expected across the board is to have a counter that isn't tile -- that is instead some material that is entirely smooth/solid (without grout lines) for easy cleaning. I also think people really appreciate things that look roomier than they were expecting. Americans tend to like big stuff and to associate it with luxury. So if the kitchen is bigger than you'd expect in house like that, that'll always make a good impression. I don't think the average American is particularly informed or design-minded, so they'd be looking to hear buzzwords like "granite counter tops" and "stainless steel appliances" and "custom cabinets" and "solid wood" and "new." I think it matters less if it's actually really unattractive granite that doesn't go well with the cabinet color, or if it's a crappy, unreliable dishwasher. That said, while most don't cook much and wouldn't know what a good layout was, anybody who does cook would also be on the look out for that. I am an enthusiastic baker, so how the work spaces are laid out is the first thing I notice aside from the general feel of a kitchen (calm, light, clean, etc.). I look for large swatches of uninterrupted counter, and I look at how someone else might use part of the kitchen while I'm in there too without getting in my way. I would run screaming from one of those tight u-shaped kitchens. They only accommodate a single cook. And I really dislike features that eat away at usable counterspace -- upper cabinets that come all the way to sit on the counters, split-level peninsulas/islands, appliance garages, etc.

I have no problem with sexual display as entertainment, and for it being on the Superbowl half time show. I watched similar Las Vegas kinds of programs as a kid, on the Sonny and Cher show, or even Ed Sullivan, for example. But it is what it is, don't pretend it is something else. You are going to have kids see that and become fans of it. I loved Cher, kids loved Madonna, etc. But the ability to also understand that it is fantasy, that it is only one way to be artful, that sex as entertainment is a whole lot different than sex in real life, and that objectification of something for art or the sake of selling a product, is not the same thing as the soul of the real deal. A wise entertainer will make it clear that their onstage persona is not the real them. I don't think Jennifer Lopez or Shakira have ever claimed that it was. The show was very well choreographed and there was a lot of female talent on display, but it was blatantly sexual at times, and I don't think we should pretend otherwise, even for our kids. I know there are a lot of people who don't think words or non verbal images or environment has effects on people, but I'm not one of them. Many of the concepts behind personal fashion and home decorating are built around the science of facts and aesthetic principles indicating that it does, and that it is profound. Sexual display is the purvey of the nightclub, and football is the purvey of stylized territorial conquest, no reason to not pair them for adults. Not sure about the kids . . . probably fine if they have gads of other things going on in their lives. Who didn't grow up listening to their parents George Carlin tapes or records and the seven words . . . another kind of shock. We survived.

Have you written before, lurker rachelacey? In any case ... welcome aboard. We hope that you like it here. There are a lot of fine people, as you'll know by now, if you've been lurking for a while.

Ole joyful's gardening today, as the ground is warm and drying after some rain (should have had many of the seeds in earlier in the week, before the rain).

It's been almost three weeks since I passed my driving test so can go whenever, wherever.

On the next Sunday, I went to the other church that I attend, and last Sunday when I went to the church where the driving instructor sings in the choir, his fairly newly-minted wife (they in their 40's?) gave me a "high five" and he said, "So you'll be good for five years, now".

Not quite - my licence expires next January, when I turn 80, so I have a group training session and a written exam (with possibly a driving test, usually not) before then.

About 190 lbs. (about 86.3 kg.) and 5" 9" (and I can't tell that to you in metric ... but my licence can - 175 cm.).

I hope that you all have a great weekend.

Son and I are going to TO tomorrow to be with daughter while the movers are loading and to spend much of her last day in this area with her. (She's flying out on Sun ... not riding in the back of the moving van).

I came in to start a thread relative to Mother's Day, if there hasn't been one similar.

And I want to get a map to tell me where to go in a strange city tomorrow, to find daughter (who has a name that some were discussing the other day as being one attached to a toilet bowl!!). Should have thought ahead and printed the map at the library last night - it's drawing by hand, now (or make a special trip).

So - I'm 79 and in good health, being

58!

I just got back from the Dermatologist, because I had a suspicious "mole". He sat there with his beautiful baby face (probably 32) and told me it was "barnacles of old age". What did he say?

It is "Seborrheic Keratoses"! Doesn't that sound better?

Then he talked about my "frawl lines" and "crows feet".

After that I needed a good feeding....So, I went to my favorite restaurant and had Shrimp Brochette and a Baked Potato with the works.

"barnacles!" Hmmmmph!

I'm 85. Have been a lurker since leaving the caregiver's board when my husband died in 2004.
I remarried this January to a man I dated before WW2. He had asked me when he returned from overseas but I refused and we went separate ways. When his wife died he found me on the Internet and after long considration, this time I said yes.

48 till mid-June. I remember at my GrandmotherÂs 90 b-day 11 years ago her saying to me and my cousin "Wow, 90, I canÂt believe how fast it went by" as my cousin and I, both in our late 30Âs look at each other freaking out over that comment!

Leslie: LOVED the TP comment. That cracked me up. How very true!

Heather: There actually is an explanation for why the years seem shorter as we grow older. From the attached link: "At age ten, a year is 10% of your life. Summer vacations can seem to last forever. At age fifty, a year shrinks to a mere 2% of oneÂs entire life span." "A particular amount of timeÂsuch as a yearÂmay seem as though it is actually moving faster because it is worth less in comparison to a whole lifespan."

Here is a link that might be useful: A Matter of Time
