Remodel a small part of mediterranean house [pics]

The house in the picture is a pre-built mediterranean house which we are planning to buy. But it has one small problem.

Many houses I have seen has an entrance to the house through the garage. But this one doesn't have an entrance to the house through the garage. We have to walk out of the garage into the house through the open!

Can anybody please suggest some redesign of the house..some thing like re-building a passage or railing designs or screens . I am concerned about our safety while walking from the garage to the house.

If there's no local building code prohibition on direct entry, I'd open a doorway to the garage. Just be sure to use a weatherstripped exterior-type door with a powerful automatic closer.

It looks like the garage has a door on the back side of the house maybe with a deck or patio between it and the kitchen. What is the possibility of enclosing the walkway along the back wall to make a hallway that's part of the house?

I think the easiest path to loading pictures on this forum is thru Photobucket.com. After you get your picture uploaded to your Album in Photobucket, which is easy because it shows you step by step what to do, you simply place you cursor on the picture and a little menu pops up. Click on "HTML Code" and immediately a yellow box pops up that says "copied". What you have done is parked your picture on Photobucket and copied the address where it *lives*. You can then open a "Message" window here on this forum and PASTE in the HTML Code which is the address where your picture now *lives*. Becareful not to delete any brackets or details from the HTML Code. Leave a couple returns (lnes or spaces) above and below the HTML Code. You can type your "Message" above or below the code. Or you can email me and I will post your pic here. It's not like who I am or my email is a big secret so here it is. :) lori@colorstrategies.net

Thanks for sharing pics. Your DD has great taste for one so young. I've love everthing she's picked. That is so sweet that your and the DBF's mother are both helping them out feathering the nest, yet it sounds like they are making their own decisions and choosing attractive items in their budget. It is wonderful to see these items being repurposed in such an attractive manner. I just have to say my 13-year-old DD thinks I'm a bit obsessed with decorating and has already told me that she is not going to bother at all--cleaning or having nice stuff or making her kids pick up their rooms, but she will let her kids make a mess, play soccer in the house and generally be a "cool mom." Yeah, right. ;)

BinsB How GREAT! I'd guess by now the 'kids' are knocking from the outside - yes? Paleese post a pic if you can. We'd all (I'm sure) love to see your accomplishments :-))) after waiting soooo long. Love the orange colors of the nursery but mmm - are they really going to sleep in one crib? :-)) Just kidding. When you have time, which likely won't be for awhile I'm sure, would love to see the nursery with the paper flowers, et al. Not to worry about the non-span house of present. It's the spirit inside that can carry it thru. Imagine what a tough time I have in my location. LOL!! You'll have lotsa fun (when/if you can find the time) doing some special stuff in your new abode. Trop - hmmm pictures this year? LOL! That will be fun to see. I'll look forward (but won't hold my breath too awfully long). :-))) I'm thinking maybe you just eliminated the kitchen altogether and are doing take out now? Houseful it's great to have you posting again. Perhaps you can help us breathe some life back into this thread as I know Bins is going to be rather busy over the next while. :-)) If it weren't for her dedication, I'm sure this thread would no longer exist. I have a few things on my plate but hopefully they will be resolved shortly and I can return to my decorating love. Hello, Bichonlover3, and thank you so much for your kind words. I know the photo isn't as clear as it could be, but to answer some of your questions: the walls are real plaster with integral color that's been burnished to show color variation; if you're referring to the undermounted sink in the island, yes, that is hammered copper, but the rest of the island is an antique french style end-grain butcher block and behind that is giallo reale marble, which is the same as the marble on the other counters. It has an antique finishe, not honed. The tile on the back splash is authentic antique Italian cement tiles. They were sourced by the person who designed and built my kitchen. (He, too, is Italian, John DiSanto 818.693.3777.) He does amazing work. In fact, my kitchen isn't the best example of his work as he was working with some existing elements as opposed to a clean design slate. I've seen other examples of his work in many different styles. I'm sure he works in your area because I know he did a wine cellar in the Chop House Restaurant in Palm Springs that's amazing. Also, let me add my two cents about the faux beams that are under discussion: in other parts of my house, we used real 200 year old beams, which gave it instant authenticity and my designer made some wooden box beams which he also did an antique finish on, that almost looked as good. As far as the styrofoam faux beams, in my opinion, unless you go over those with an additional finish, they tend to look pretty plastic.

The print looks to be a reverse of the photo. I believe the door is on the front of the house. Am I correct suzies?

Often times you see Mediterranean homes with wrought iron bars , done in a pretty design, in the entry way. It looks like you could put a set of bars between each column, with a set of wrought iron doors in the center. I think that could look really cool and add to the style of your home as well as keep you safe. You could have flowering vines running up the bars. You would have to find someone who does that sort of work, it will be pricey. Another option is to put a doorway from garage to the office, it looks like you have a built in desk on that wall, but it could still be done. I never understand why people put a garage on a house without an inside entrance...does not make sense.

Photos of the office wall common with the garage would greatly help. But, looking at the floorplan, it looks like there is a sink on that wall. If so, the easy & least expensive thing to do would be to remove the sink area & install a door into the study in its place. Then you could install ceramic tile just in the area exposed if you don't have extra flooring to match.

I can't imagine NOT have a door from the garage into the house! Even with a partially covered walkway,I would not want to have to go outside to haul groceries in the front door, especially in inclement weather. How far do you have to go to get to the kitchen, and is it necessary to walk through the dining room to get there?

However, the alternative, having an entrance into the study, doesn't look like an improvement. It's too bad that the kitchen isn't closer to the garage!
