Can't comment on the color without seeing the house in context to its surroundings but I agree with qdognj that the door should not be left with just primer.

Have to agree with painting it. Color depends on the shade of taupe the house is. Do you have a photo?

What color doors do the neighbors have? Is there another burgundy? If so, you may want to change the choice

The siding is Taupe, what color is the trim on the windows? What color are your shutters? For resale your best bet is to paint the front door the same color as the trim.

YES! If you need a demonstration of the power of paint to perk up curb appeal, here are the before and afters of a front door on a house I am selling. You can see that I did NOT match the trim color (that pinkish-tan around the door, which has also since been touched up) -- most people choose a contrasting color for the door to give it some pop. I chose a color that would brighten the shadowy front door area and complement the brick. If you have a photo, consider posting it over on the Home Dec forum where someone might be available to Photoshop some colors for you.

Oh, this front door area looks even spiffier now, I just don't have the newest pics downloaded yet. Anyway, you can see just how much of a difference it makes.

our closest neighbour is 1/2 miles away...we live on a farm. The trim around our windows and doors are white. Same with fasia and soffet and gutters. No shutters. I will see if I can find a picture to post.

The colour I was thinking about was by Benjamin Moore Historical Color 61- New London Burgandy, or HC 64-Townsend Harbour Brown.

I like a contrasting color to the trim. IMO, it sets the door off. No matter what, definitely paint the door, and I think a burgundy or deep red would be nice.

ok, I got some photos. The first 2 are when the house was built 5 yrs ago, the last one is of my hubby finally building stairs to the veranda! We couldn't put the stairs leading up to the front door because the builder or designer didn't leave enough room, so we had to improvise and put them in the middle. One more reason I think I need to paint the door a contrasting color so you can see it!

I thought my husband was going to flip when I came home with a can of "red, red, wine" for some trim work. Our house is newly re-stuccoed with a creamy, buttery, taupe and the trim is a musky, dark green. I didn't want to do the front door because it's an antique wooden one, but the basement door was new, we'd just replaced it. I had to do three coats, because the paint was so dark, but against the green stairwell, and the taupe house it looks smashing! I'd go with yes........paint that dude!

The ones I notice and like the most are red or black...something makes those doors stand out.

Our house is a cream with lighter cream accent. the front door was the same color and looked blah! We painted it a deep red so it pops. It looks so much better than it did. However, the change hasn't sold my house.

Definitely paint the front door! I would even go so far as to say that ALL sellers should paint their front door and the trim around the porch before they list. That is a great chance to make a positive impression on a buyer. Remember they will be standing there looking around while the Realtor opens the lockbox or the door is answered.

Canobeans, your door looks great--you did a wonderful job of picking up a color in the brick, it really looks "custom".

And I completely disagree that the door should be the same color as the trim, in my current home and the previous one, the trim was "Colonial White" and that would have been a blaaaaah door color. Red/burgundy is a great choice with taupe siding, our previous door was Duron "Farm House Red"

Here is a suggestion for door colors from a feng shui online source.

"If you'd like to bring new energy to your home, painting your front door a different color can help. Red is often recommended because in feng shui the color red is associated with success and prosperity, but that may not be the most appropriate choice for everyone. Choose a color that you like, that will be appropriate to the rest of the house exterior, and that supports your goals.

Black and dark blue are the colors associated with opportunities, social contacts, and career success.
Green is associated with wood energy, which is uplifting in nature. Lighter shades of green are associated with new growth and new beginnings; darker shades of green are associated with the energy of mature trees and forests. Both green and purple are associated with "fortunate blessings" which include (but are not limited to) financial prosperity.
Yellows and browns are associated with the stability of earth energy, but may not be the best choice for a front door, where you would like the chi to be more active.
White is associated with metal and creativity, but it will show dirt more clearly, so be sure to keep it clean.

laura...looks awesome! What a gorgeous house, both of them! I just think I will have to twist my hubby's arm and just paint the door! At least I'll get to enjoy it for the winter!
