My uncle's quilt

I have always felt a little sad that I began quilting only after my mom died. She would have liked a quilt from me. So I knew I had to make her brother one. Here is the quilt I made for my uncle and aunt from a pattern called Granada by Villa Rosa Designs. I saw this kit in a shop and thought it would be perfect for them. The backing is champagne-colored Minky.

I like it! And I usually don't like to quilt with browns but the mustard yellow really makes it. Great job!

We had both of these beans for dinner last night, Uncle Steve's seemed to hang on to it's sweetness and were quite good, beans were beginning to form in some of the pods and were just a little on the tough side so I'm thinking I picked this lot a little too late, the next picking I'll pick at an earlier stage. My italians turn out to be a meatier bean than Uncle Steve's these cooked up with a touch of crispness and very tender. I'm really interested to hear how my italians do south of the border, if different growing conditions make a difference, whether they're keepers or not. Uncle Steve's I will definitely grow again, every time I go past them I have to sample one, they are so crisp and sweet. Tonight I'm going to steam some of the Blue Jay I grew in containers. It's a good job both DH and I love beans we've got lots to try :). Annette

Can you share a layout that includes the adjoining room(s) and the location of the front door? I'm having some difficulty understanding how the layout you posted relates to your living room. The open plan vs not open plan is really a personal preference and depends on lifestyle. It may even be a generational gap (though I don't have enough information to be certain). As long as this is your home and your money, I would try to firmly explain that this change is designed to suit your lifestyle, not the lifestyle of your uncle or those who lived in the other homes he has built in the past. Maybe you can verbally acknowledge his concerns (additional visibility to the kitchen work area, dirty dishes and all, less defined living room space) and explain that you understand these limitations but your goal is to achieve a more open plan where the rooms intentionally blend and give you more flexibility. In terms of "better defining the living room", that probably means making an obvious definition between two rooms. By opening up the wall, there isn't quite as clearly defined lines between the different rooms. Again it really depends on preferences and lifestyle. In the past, rooms were intentionally more separate. The kitchen was more of a work space than a social space and one didn't want the kitchen to be visible during a dinner party or social gathering. Times have changed, lifestyles have changed, and "open concept" is popular.

Thank you!!!! We were out of town today at a picnic that Uncle Bill was VERY much looking forward to but was unable to attend. They started his Chemotherapy at about 6:00 Saturday night. It is supposed to last for 24 hours, I think thats what my mother in law said. She said that right now they are thinking he will be able to return home on Tuesday so we have a few days to get the membership count up higher. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for your encouraging words and just taking the time to do this for him. I can't tell you how much this means to me. :)

It looks great. I really like the rectangle shapes with the curved quilting. And a minky back just sounds luxurious.

I love that design and your color/fabric choices work great! It's on the modern side of the quilting world which I find myself leaning towards more and more. WOW...this is added to my project list.

Very nice and gentlemanly, yet the minky makes it soft and cuddly -- all men like that combination while they recline and control the remote while switching between golf, football, baseball, and NASCAR.

Is this a kit or did you pick the fabrics? Your placement of the stripes is very appealing. You have such a good eye.

I know what you mean about your Mom~I started sewing as a little kid - my Mom couldn't sew a button on and she was severely color blind - odd for a female, but runs in the family. I used to send her to Singer Sewing Fabric Shop to buy thread & notions for me while I was in school --I always sent fabric swatches and the sweet ladies there knew not to let her leave with the wrong shades. She always supported my sewing and every day that I quilt, I think how much she would have loved a special quilt made just for her.

Your Mom would be proud you made this for her brother. I like that you quilt with emotion.

Redmary, Minky is an incredibly soft and cuddly, longer fiber, plush fabric - probably polyester. Babies love it, so I'm told, and so do adults, both male and female. It feels absolutely wonderful. I used it to back my own cuddle quilt.

Marsha, this quilt came as a kit. I usually don't buy kits, because I love to choose my own fabrics, but this one really appealed to me. I always agonize over color placement. Sometimes when I'm finished with a quilt I ask, "How did I ever let that happen?" But generally I'm quite pleased with the results.

Love your uncle's quilt. I know what you mean. I have quilts left to me by Grandmas on both sides also by a Great Grandma...wish I had taken quilting up much earlier!

Very nice! I love brown, and I love brown and blue together. It's masculine but cozy. You had a good idea with the pants hangers, too.
