My Uncle is fighting cancer.... Facebook help please

My Uncle Bill has lymphoma. He found out today that all of the chemotherapy hasn't been helping. Today his doctor sent him to the hospital to start Salvage Chemotherapy. I looked it up, and it is disheartening.

Just recently he became one of the administrators of a Facebook group called God Answers Prayer. He has asked us all to send an invitation to all of our friends. He would like to see this group grow. He mentioned hoping to see 350 members by this weekend. I don't know that its possible because right now there are just 217 members.

This has really been tugging at my heart. I would absolutely love for him to return from the hospital and see a large increase in members. I thought to come to my KT friends for help as I know many of you are on Facebook.

If you have never joined a group on Facebook and it sounds intimidating, please don't worry. You don't have to post or contribute if you don't want to. If you'd like to however, that is more than fine as well.

If you don't have a Facebook page, please add him to your prayers or send special thoughts or both.

Wow, thanks everyone. Man you all are amazing! I didn't mean to make people cry! It was a little weird for me to realize that my best friend is the same age as my mom was when she died! I talked to granny yesterday, she wants me to read a poem at my mom's 'memorial' on Saturday. I guess I will, I've never been able to say no to her! I'll post back and let you know how Saturday goes. I hope I remember to get a picture of me with granny to post here. Dcarch, who knows if I will lose weight now or not. I have a sense of humor about it and I'm happy with myself... I'm not out to impress anyone. If I do, great, and if not, I'll be happy anyway. I think I love food too much to be very skinny. And yes, Annie is right... I LOVE vacuums. Here's a Youtube video of my collection :o) I made this to show other vacuum and appliance collectors (yes, there's a club for that too).... You'll have to excuse the messy place! I've gotten two more since I made the video!

It's true that you don't blame the medium because people are stupid and addicted to their cellphones, "social media" resources, etc, but it's BECAUSE people are stupid and addicted to their cellphones "social media" resources, etc, is just another reason I *don't* do MySpace, I *don't* do Facebook, I *don't* look for dates on Craigslist, I *don't* "tweet" or participate in any of the other technological addictions. I don't need these pacifiers to stay in touch with people. There's plenty of other, far better ways to do stay in touch. Used to be "sex, drugs and rock & roll" were the addictions of the day. Now it's cellphone, text and Facebook/social media. Whenever I see someone who can't resist checking every time that leash sounds a chime, can't resist thumbing away at it when it does and can't go an hour without checking their "page" I can't help but wonder if we shouldn't give a special lane on the roads so we can cull the herd a bit. Ugh...just returned from my regular vets' in order to get Sasha's files and ultrasounds, etc. for Wednesday's appt. with the oncologist. I reviewed my decision with my primary vet to go to a specialist. They still feel that surgery or euthanasia are the two options I am faced with. I reviewed the second set of ultrasounds with my vet. She noted that there appears to be a small tumor on a lymph node as well in addition to the large one on her intestines. Not good news at all. I'll tell you, I'm glad they can read those ultrasound pics, they seem pretty confusing to me. The kidneys look like tumors to me.... After leaving my vet, I'm feeling less sure about the specialist route now. I'm starting to feel like I'm fighting a losing battle. I am normally a very decisive person and feel like every hour I change my mind as to what to do for my cat. What I am struggling with is I don't want to put her through the ordeal of surgery--- only to then euthanize her. She's lost half her body weight in 3.5 weeks. I'd like to get a prognosis without having to have surgery. Is this even possible? My vet did 3 aspirations -- all showed necropic tissue which leaves the results indeterminant. Symptomatically, based on location of the tumor, lymphoma is the best guess. My vet feels that surgery is the only option left for treatment. Also, this specialist I have the appt. with on Wed. is the specialist my vet has been consulting with and who would perform the surgery. Ironically, last night and this morning, Sasha decided to begin eating again on her own. I got half a can of A/D into her. While it felt like a small victory, I have to remind myself that food will not cure her. I'm really struggling with this and feel more confused than ever.

You are absolutely right Anne. After 20yrs too. That's a remarkable run of such an aggressive cancer but still.... it does suck! As Heather says, she recovered quickly although I think it was day 2 post op that she went shopping! Marjorie sounds equally stoic and probably should be Heather's twin instead of me. I'm just not built with the same stuff as she is. I'd be the one asking for the morphine. I saw Heather go through chemo, surgery and then radiation virtually without complaint. She set the bar very high should I follow in her footsteps. I went with Heather for her pre-op anaesthetic visit. The anaethetist said "Don't worry - it's simple surgery! I wanted to scream at him - Simple..... for who! Compared to what your sister has gone through it may well be but when I worked with oncology children, it was often the simple stuff that seemed to them to be the last straw! They'd tolerate bone marrows/spinal taps but lose it when having blood drawn. If you don't have one - a fanny pack will make it a lot easier to have to hold the JP drains. Much easier than coiling the tubing and pinning it to your clothes. I will be thinking of your sister in the coming days. I totally understand your need not to be an active caregiver without a break. Please don't feel selfish. A worn-out caregiver whether it be physically or emotionally is just not an effective one. You are very wise to realize that ahead of time.

I'm not sure what kind it is Kat. Thank you for joining though. I know that he has been fighting it for a couple of years now.

My mother in law just put an update there about him. This is what she wrote: Update on Bill Willis.......dr told angie that his chest and lungs are full of cancer....hemoglobin is low which may be a sign of bleeding somewhere. The chemo that they are going to start shortly is very toxic. He'll have to have a large dose because of his size. He has an appt at cleveland clinic friday to consult about a bone marrow transplant. I'm believing for a miracle.

I really can't tell you how much this hurts. This man is absolutely AMAZING. When DH and I were just dating as teens it was this Uncle who treated me like I was family immediately. Hes the person who is first in line to help others in need. The one who is sick with cancer but out first thing in the morning after a snow storm shoveling driveways for his friends and neighbors. The kind of person who lights up a room when he walks in it.

I am so worried about him. My heart is just hurting.

Heather my heart goes out to your uncle and family.I am watching my DFIL go thur brain cancer,seizures and radation and die a painful slowly death.They gave him now around 1 month to 2months but only the good man up stairs know.No matter what happens it hurts to see a love one battle cancer.Like I posted before I watched my own dear dad DIE the age 57 and it is very hard.I pray things will get better for yall.HUgs Judy

Sounds like the Drs haven't completely giving up hope. About a year ago I signed up for the bone marrow registry. It had been nagging at me for a while to just do it and quit making excuses. Heading to Facebook now to join the group. I don't have an account, but Sparky does!

Heather though I'm taking a break from facebook to get caught up on things around the house and to work on my health by getting up from the computer more often, I took time to join your uncles group. I also scrolled down and clicked on "share" so I could invite all my facebook friends.
I'll be praying too!

Thank you!!!! We were out of town today at a picnic that Uncle Bill was VERY much looking forward to but was unable to attend.

They started his Chemotherapy at about 6:00 Saturday night. It is supposed to last for 24 hours, I think thats what my mother in law said. She said that right now they are thinking he will be able to return home on Tuesday so we have a few days to get the membership count up higher.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for your encouraging words and just taking the time to do this for him. I can't tell you how much this means to me. :)

Uncle Bill was able to come home from the hospital today. He will return in 3 weeks to do it again. He says he is feeling better already and he didn't even get sick from the massive dose of chemo they gave him, which completely floored his doctors and nurses!! :)
