QOTD (Sept. 10) Mothers and Daughters

I wonder how many mother - daughter combinations there are on the Quilting Forum. My daughter and I both belong (sandlapper_rose and dragonflyUSC). I know of two other mother and daughter pairs, but I will leave it up to them if they want to post it here. Do we have any other family relationships where both are members of the Quilt Forum on GardenWeb?

I should have thought of asking this one for Mother's Day! LOL

Not me!!! I have one daughter and she teaches and home schools. She loves my quilts, but she is not interested in making one (at this point she is too busy).

She shares my passion for gardening!

No, I have one daugher that has made a quilt and helps me with my layouts but isn't very active.
I have another daughter that sews but more interested in clothes and household things. Has several of my creations and looks for more.

I finally got to read your whole post. I bet you are feeling like tearing your hair out because she sure doesn't seem to value your time or that you have other things to do. I am so sorry. My dad will be 91 in July and had hip/femur surgery in November and, sadly, it just hasn't healed. The next step is a partial hip replacement with a titanium rod inserted in the femur. What I have noticed is that on the days he has pain he can't seem to hand me his lunch or dinner plate or mail in order for me to clean up. I think it is a mental decision that they can't do the simplest of things. I think contacting any senior centers or any senior programs available through government services might be a great start. There are organizations that will take your mom grocery shopping or to appointments if they are fairly local. Some charge, some take donations and some are totally free. Many grocery stores have online ordering and will deliver to her home for a fee. That could be a lifesaver for sure. Do insist on being in charge of her calendar or you won't be able to attend or drive. She cannot make decisions for you when you are the ride. Let us know what you have decided to do and know that we all support you and most have gone through (or are going through) similar situations. The is a great place to vent! Robyn

Only a few times, and I was happy to do it because they were close friends. I currently have friend who is very overweight and she is working really hard to loose the weight. Since money is very tight with her (and to help encourage the weight loss), I told her I'd alter her pants as she shrunk! (luckily, most are elastic waist pants) My son (turning 10 in a few days) thinks I can sew any costume whether it is for him or one of his Transformer figures. He usually has moved on to a new project by the time we actually get around to creating something (thank goodness!!). My daughter (age 8) is wanting a new purse. Now that I can handle!

I have been thinking about this for quite a bit and have decided that I am probably with Jennifer in that I really haven't made my most difficult quilt yet. Every one has some little challenge or learning curve but overall the patterns I choose are doable. The hardest one that comes to mind was a Jewel Box that I did for DD. The making wasn't hard but after a few years, one particular fabric started fraying. So I took it home and took the whole thing apart, replaced the frayed squares and triangles, sewed the blocks back together. That was five years ago. There it sits. I just can't get up the steam to finish it. And it stares at me every time I go in the laundry room, mocking me! Bad quilt! Theresa

QOTD 9/11 - Where were you?

I was in hospital in Orange, Australia. I had collapsed the day before and rushed to hospital. They didn't know at the time what was the matter with me. I was awake during the night and the nurses were talking about the attack on the WTC. They were watching it on the TV on the ward. In the morning I was able to get up when my husband came in and go and watch the TV myself and see the unbelievable events. They were played non stop on all channels. My husband said he had stayed up and had been watching TV and seen the 2nd plane when it hit the 2nd tower. I would think everyone in Australia would have been watching too. I heard today that 10 Australians died in the Towers, not many compared to US citizens, but I think there were people from many nations working there. This event has affected not only US citizens but the entire democratic world. I later went on to be diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis - a rare auto immune disorder. My daughter is a quilter off and on but isn't interested in online social groups. Maybe someday. She does follow what I do and make but that's about all. I toss scraps to her now and then.

Salijo is my oldest daughter. She has many talents (including musical) and has a great eye for detecting shades of color that go together. Because of her interest in other crafts, I'm the avid quilter. The other 2 girls are my armchair enthusiasts. @:)

No daughters for me - but my mother is an active quilter. She enjoys the things I show her from the forum, but she doesn't get involved with the online stuff much! I do love asking her for advice / sharing my ideas with her.

This is a neat question and I like reading how many of you share your quilting with mothers and daughters. My mother was an avid clothing maker but only made a few quilts. She loved her time at the sewing machine though and we were always able to share that.

My daughter is interested in quilting and has a great eye for color and design.She is extremely busy with her business and doesn't have time for quilting. Hopefully one day she will have more time for quilting.

My daughter is an excited beginner quilter, but since she's only 10, she's not allowed on forums yet.

My mother was mostly a garment sewer, but she is working to finish her first quilt! However, she can barely turn on a computer and would never be able to find her way here! LOL

That's a great question! My mom has already answered for us. I don't get on the forum all the time, but I lurk more often than post.

Unfortunately, I have so many interests, that I can't master any one of them. Sometimes I get discouraged because there is so much I want to do, I can't decide and end up doing nothing.

I am the only quilter in my very large extended family. None of my ancestors on either side ever made a quilt that anyone has ever heard of, LOL.

My son (24 yo) can sew on a machine if he needs to repair something - usually a bike jersey, but at this point he's not interested in sewing for sewing's sake. But that's hardly surprising - he's in grad school, has a job, and a girlfriend.

What thrilled me is when he brought a couple of cycling buddies over for the afternoon, and they all wanted to see my studio, and hear about the Quilts of Valor. DS is evidently proud of me for those quilts.

My daughter is only 10 and is too busy with tumbling, cheer leading and most recently, ballet, to do much sewing. She has shown some interest, so maybe one of these days????? I do get her opinion on layout and colors at times. Her eye is definitely improving with age, LOL!!

Neither of my daughters has ever been near a sewing machine although they can manage to sew on a button. They are however, always looking for finished baby quilts to give as gifts at baby showers.
