Today's arrivals? Tree Swallows! 3 pics

The new bird arrival for today is the "Tree Swallow".

They came zooming in this morning with great fan-fair and hysterical twittering (not the digital kind! LOL). They've checked out the bluebird and chickadee boxes, tried the back-yard gourd that is hanging in the maple tree on for size, irritated the martins and, in general, acted like Tree Swallows.

We're still trying to get three more nesting boxes up, so I'm sure they'll eventually settle down. "We" will make more progress when hubby gets off 13-hour shifts and finishes his Terrorist Awareness training.

I think the Cape May Warbler has left for the completion of his migration route. I've not seen him all day. It was so exciting to add a "new bird" to my list. He was such a delightful little visitor while he was here; I hope he comes back through in the fall.

It really may be "spring" now! Purple Martins, Baltimore Orioles, Hummingbirds, Rose-Breasted Grossbeaks, Harris Sparrows, and Tree Swallows! Today is the first day I've ventured outside without my fleece hoody on.

And this is my photo of a Tree Swallow checking his nest in one of my smaller, natural gourds.

My first clutch of five Tree Swallow hatchings from 2006. They all fledged. TSs line their nest with feathers, lots of big, fluffy, preferably white, feathers.

We had tree swallows a few years ago in our bird house. They were so cute with their little helmet looking heads.

greenmulberry...get ready to be disappointed when you see those trees. They are gonna be small, but don't be discouraged no matter what anyone here says. There are however a lot better places to get trees from, no doubt. The biggest, prettiest and best fruit tree I have, came from Arborday and at the time cost I think $6.98. It has provided my family with beauty in the yard and probably over 140 lbs. of spectacular ( truly something special) fruit in just 3 years fruiting. It is a Methley plum. I also have a Montmorency cherry that produces fruit every year and it's good too...I don't net it so the birds like it more than we do, but that's ok. My wife made a great cobbler this year...the birds got the rest. Arborday's trees take more time and come with greater risk and they are not as good as other better nurseries at getting things right, but they are WAY cheaper. They get some people growing who may otherwise would not have. If a really good nursery could duplicate their advertising campaign...they'd really have something going. I've had a TRES here since Saturday the 17th, in Central WI. Monday there were two but now we are back to one again. It isn't doing much house hunting yet, just hanging around. Will be the first year the Blues (that are house hunting already) will get their choice of nestboxes cause normally the TRES are here first. Lisa, I am messing with two friggin male HOSP, got one with the BB gun yesterday but I missed the other one this morning, feathers flew but he flew away just fine. Have the vanert set for him now as he was in a box just a bit ago. Ugh! Donna

Hey Michelle and Cathy, I love the TRES too (had seven pairs nesting here last year!) but since TRES are so prevalant here it is more exciting to get a Bluebird pair, kwim?? I have noticed though that until the TRES start nestbuilding they will defend the house they chose and any houses near it and when they start a rucus all the TRES in the area come to join in. The TRES were MIA yesterday with the sudden drop in temps and only one pair is around today. Just this morning a male Blue was sitting on the house that I took the pic of the TRES on and he was singing away. I think he is alone trying to find a female. Hopefully one shows up before the TRES return which I am sure will be on Wednesday. Supposed to be pretty yucky today and tomorrow yet with cool temps but back up to 60 by Wednesday. I would just like at least one Blue pair either here or at the park along with all the TRES. =) Donna

I love these birds. I am worried about mine. We have been cold and rainey, froze last night. I did see a bunch of them down at the lake yesterday with temps near 60. They have been here long enough to recover from migration and I did see a few dragonflys out yesterday. Lots of small bugs hovering over puddles. With last night being 29 im afraid all those bugs are gone. Today may get to 62 and sunny. She has not been in the box much the last couple days but has been spending the nights with her two eggs, she is in there now, looks like she is laying her 3rd egg. Poor thing. I hope they have enough energy to make it though this. It is going to rain again tomorrow afternoon and into the night. At least I can keep a watchful eye on the eggs with my cam box while she is gone for long periods trying to find food. I just checked, she was looking out the hole and she was panting heavily, I assumed she had laid but there are still only 2. Im am afraid for this bird.

So that is what a Tree Swallow looks like. Very pretty.

I had heard so much about TS's taking over BB boxes that I thought they would have to be unattractive.

Thanks for educating me.

Hi Sue,

There is a "Tree Swallow Protocol" which describes how to set two or three bluebird boxes in such a way (distance and angles) so that a pair of each, BBs and TSs, will nest near one another, and protect one another from intruders of their same species.

It's also used to get Tree Swallows, Blue Birdss, and Purple Martins to nest peacefully near (25-35 ft.) one another.

You may have to muddle through the site, but it's worth the effort. I'm including a link. It really does work.

In my case, I don't allow the TSs to nest in the PM rack. I will close off the gourd they want and move it about 30 feet away. If there are TSs nesting within 25-35 feet of the Purple Martin rack, they will not bother the martins, but they also won't allow any other TSs to come close.

TSs win; PMs win; Carol's happy.

Here is a link that might be useful: Tree Swallow Protocol for nesting birds

Carol, I had a pair of TS checking out a BB box this weekend. Bluebirds are/have hatched. I had 4 BB eggs, and only 2 hatched. It's been so cold this spring, I'm suprised any hatched. I know there is another BB box I put up in the state park right next to our land, that had eggs. I didn't check it over the weekend, but I will this Saturday. Also, I've got 2 PM's checking in when I had to leave the cabin. I'm anxious to see how many are there this weekend when I get there.

I forgot to say, I think they look like little Orca's looking out of their box.

Caroline, I love reading about your birds and seeing the photos. I had my first Rose Breasted Grosbeak last year. He came for one day, gorged himself at the feeder and then left. I was so happy this year when he reappeared on Mother's Day and stayed for 2 days.

thanks for posting the photos.

Sue, here's a positive point about when TS take over a Bluebird box. They only nest once per season. So, after they leave the box, clean it out, and it's ready for a Bluebird. Also, you can double up the nestboxes for both like Caroline said.
