Cute house!

I'm not sure anyone can help with suggestions unless you can post a current photo of the back of the house...

Do you need a railing or a fence? And where do you need it? And why is neighbor complaining? Why do you have to do a railing to make neighbor happy? Do you need privacy or just a secured enclosure? How tall can the fence be? There are usually town restrictions and you will need a permit if it is a big project like enclosing backyard. Oh, do you have this balcony off the back with no railing?

I do have this photo. It shows the Lanai/ Juliet Porch and the unfinished exterior of the addition. Above the garage door is the french doors leading to the Lanai (left) from the Master bedroom. The unfinished addition is now bricked the same as the house, and the two dormers are stucco-ed and painted brown. We will add limestone detailing in the peaks of the dormers as shown in one of the dormers on the front of the house, as well as trimboards around the window and doorway. That is a future project though.... =)

I can add a current photo, however, the tree is fully leafed out now so there really is not much viewing of the Lanai/ Juliet Porch. But do let me know if that would help.

Three D: sorry for my confusing post. This will probably make more sense to you now! Yes, we have a permit out for all of this work, but a neighbor called to complain that our lanai/ juliet porch did not have a railing so the city is wanting us to install one immediately even though no one obviously uses it with no railing. Kind of a CYA request on their part and when the city makes a request, well...we do it =)

More info: we will need to have certain specifications for height and also no more than 4" between slats/ ballisters. I am most interested in any opinions of what styling we should look for to coordinate with the Tudor styling. Obviously, traditional tudors do not have porches so I have little to go on for ideas of what would look nice. Hubby prefers all metal; I have no idea what I would like other than something more ornate than just a plain deck railing.

aloha, here are some pictures of more metal balcony railings for you to look at. Most local wrought iron/steel fabricators make something similar. Try googling wrought iron and your location or look in the yellow pages.

I see all the big box stores carry the ballisters you showed, 3D. I did find a nice one that used the ballisters with those baskets (the square metal thingy) and then had an added scrolly design at the top between a double top rail. So thank you for your input too, awm. They sell the scrolly things on Ebay and I am guessing we can communicate w/ them to make sure we make everything the correct size so we can add the scrolly design later on.

I would not use anything scrolly, as that doesn't feel right with the wonderful Tudor style of your home (I LOVE Tudors).

I would keep the lines simple (no scrolls), and then see about adding a shield shape design in the center of the railing. Something more in keeping with the feel of the Tudor.

I would also consider adding a similarly styled window box below the other window there, so that the porch doesn't feel like such an anomaly on that side of the house.

No, we won't use anything too odd like vines or anything like that. Did not look too closely since it is a 'down the road' thing, but point well taken. I may post again for opinions. I did see a circle design that I really liked and have seen in use at the local university on their Juliet Porches...but the city just installed it for fencing down the street so probably will have to skip that =)
