Granite cut for sink is wrong

We purchased a franke oceania sink specifically because it has a ledge that allows the use of its accesories, like the colander. This sink came with a template but the granite fabricator didn't use it -- they used the sink itself as a template and didn't know about the use of the ledge. They overlaid the ledge with granite and the colander accessory doesn't fit.

Can this be fixed? The fabricator first said they used "industry standard" in not using the template and that we should have told them to cut it differently -- how would we know we needed to tell them that? They suggested they maybe could grind it to a bigger opening. If so, would it look as good as it does now?

I'd appreciate any help with this.

So, if they grind it, would they remove the sink first? Grinding possible, but does make a mess! If you decide to proceed, have them cover the work area with a makeshift tent. My KG used plastic garbage bags to contain the dust- one of his helpers had a shopvac going and another held up the 'tent'. They also taped garbage bags over adjacent cupboards. (Mine wasn't grinding a sink cutout, but removing a counter)

If the granite counter can be removed, have them take it back and cut a larger opening.

The reveal on sink is something that the client specifies. I am guessing the ledge is a positive reveal.

Wow. Not good. Going through something similar right now. Wife and I are redoing the master bath. Using a company I have dealt with for years and know well. 2 Kohler 2882 rectangle sinks. Cutout should be 17 x 12 9/16 and they cut 17 x 13. No lip overhang on front and back and you can see the gap underneath. Waiting on template because they evidently didn't use the one you download from Kohler. Had a long talk with their head guy and he suggests bigger sinks which is ok if we can find one. Other option is he said has no money in it and would consider refunding my money and ending the deal instead of basically paying me and putting in a new top. Seriously? I did not cut it out, they had the sink to go by and we are not happy with how it looks. I have been building cabinets for 30 years in high end homes and if I make a mistake (which rarely happens because I am meticulous on dimension taking) I build it over and fix it. Not happy right now with what is developing but will know more hopefully in a day or so when they see the Kohler template in person.

The one thing I can think of is... Some KW has some movement that runs lengthwise on the slab. If your slab has that, and it may not, but if it does, and if you cut top to bottom, you will get that movement coming at you, rather than running horizontally on the counter. A few people have mentioned to me that that bothers some people, and I saw some made up on display that "came at me" and I think it might have bothered me too, but maybe I'd get used to it. But, not all KW slabs have that. Some have a diagonal movement in which case it would probably be the same either way as far as movement toward you goes. But, even if you couldn't see the seams you would be able to tell it wasn't the same piece because of the pattern. If you can get one of the KW slabs with essentially no movement then I'd think you would probably be fine from a movement/visual perspective. If doing it top to bottom allows you to get what you want, then I'd try to pick a slab with no movement and go for it. But, as suggested, look at your slab and see if you can picture it that way. Or, take a picture, print it, cut it up, and see what you think.

Davidro-lol, so true! I actually thought this morning when I saw the dirty dishes that my kids and DH had so kindly stacked in the sink for me, "And why exactly did I want a larger one?" Jilljohn-But at least you have the other half of the sink to use! But it's okay...I'm slowly getting used to it. A 9" sink? I'm trying to picture that! I don't really think that is something that buyers notice when touring homes, so hopefully you won't have to replace it. I think we're going to keep it. I do now have a garbage disposal where I did not before, so I'm pretty pleased with that. :)

Worse---- too big. I guess the guy wrote down reveal, but I didn't want reveal and head kitchen guy was standing there for the whole conversation and sided with me. Basically it is a reveal except for corners, which line up withy the edges of the sink. I didn't get a picture but should have. Anyway, we made sure they took the actual sink this time and not just the template because I will be super bummed if it happens twice!

You "told" them by giving them the template. I agree with pharaoh, have them remove the counter and recut it - they didn't do their job. At least you need a bigger hole, not a smaller one!

If you gave them the template and they chose not to use it, they should have at least mentioned that they planned to disregard it. Did you give them the spec sheet as well?

I wasn't aware that there was a particular reveal that's considered "industry standard". Some fabricators dislike positive reveals because they're harder to get right...

If they re-cut it in place, make sure you remove the drawers and completely tape over the glides, bec if you don't the granite dust will adhere to the lubricated glides and they will be ruined. (I read this on a GW thread.)
