Tube Steel to Support Sagging Joists

I'm currently having a GC remodel the upstairs of my 1920's colonial. The joists between the first and second floor are sagging about three inches. The joists mostly run north south, but under the bathroom that is being remodeled they are running east west and are toenailed. After opening the floor, the GC now thinks we need to jack up the floor and run two parallel steel beams (possibly tube steel)for support. He's planning to run one beam directly under the joists under the bathroom, and another under the long joists that span the length of the house. He would set the steel beams on the cinder blocks supporting the chimney on one side, and use steel posts in the wall on the other. He is estimating the cost at 5-6K.

Does anyone have experience with using steel beams to support sagging joists? I really don't have much knowledge or experience with home renovations, so I'm not even sure what questions to ask. Any advice would be helpful.
