How to tell if a wall is load bearing.

I have an 87" wall sticking out in the middle of the kitchen. I think it used to be a dining room/kitchen and the former owners removed walls to make it one big 450 sq. foot kitchen. My thoughts are the wall was left as a partition to separate the open laundry room off. The ceiling above are concrete. I had a contractor look at it last night. We pulled back the carpet on the floor upstairs and looked at the concrete under it. There were no beams or anything, which he said meant the wall was not load bearing. I want to remove this wall to open up the kitchen but am scared that it may be supporting the concrete above.

Is there any way to be certain, or am I overworrying?
