WHY do I have to seal my cedar deck?
Comments (21)Reed is right. I would come in at about $900 dollars to do your deck (if it has rails on three sides and three or less steps). If you do it yourself and you mess up the prep (likely for a newbie) You will be right back out there in the spring spraying and scrubbbing and overapplying sealer on top of mold only to have it fail by summer's end again. If properly maintained your deck could last 20 years+. I've seen people save nickels using bleach cleaners and using subpar sealers. Stripper is going to cost you $100.. Pre mixed acidic brightener will be another $25..Five gallons of quality sealer will set you back $225. Renting a pressure washer (which you need to strip albeit using a nozzzle to take your pressure way down) will cost you another $125 for two days. Newbie on a deck that size prepare for two 8 hour days in the sun stripping and brightening. Another 2 or three days sealing it. So now you have $475, at least four full days and you still have no guarantee of results. Ooops did you forget to mask properly? You have three dead plants, brown grass and sealer bonded to your nice siding. Hopefully looking at this will change your mentality. You can't afford NOT to hire a professional....See Moredo I have to seal my deck?
Comments (4)Looking through the mold I would think its Preasure Treated lumber. Puting a finish on your deck will not make it last any longer at this point. As long as the slipery surface and the green mildew/mold weathered look is ok with you feel free to leave it as is. On the other hand having that stuff get on your feet/footware/hands and tracking it inside, the general health issues involved with constant contact with mold as well as the mental state just looking at a deck that dirty every time you get near it that must go on to you and your company that comes by to visit....might be a hint for the need of a good cleaning/refinish for your deck in the very near furture. The mold is so advanced a power washer would have a good workout for several years trying to get it off. WWW.woodrich-brand.com sells a critic base stripper and a brightner combo that with a little work on your part a brush,,,well mabey several brushes,,and runing water will remove the plants. They also sell a pretty good finish. In fact if you sent them those pictures they might send you the products for free, you could become a Poster Child for them. Comments (8)No need to test the marble. I'll tell you right now-- unless it's a serpentine marble (usually dark green with lightning bolt type veining to it), it needs a sealer. As for recommendations, one of two-- Miracle's 511 Impregnator, or Stone Tech Impregnator Pro, and yes, it's very easy to seal. Take an old towel or cotton t-shirt and cut it in half. Use one side to wipe the sealer on. Let it set for about 5 minutes or so, and then take the other half and buff off the excess. Easy as pie, but time consuming, so you could really save yourself some money doing it yourself....See MoreHow do you seal your marble countertop??
Comments (1)Hi lbrody.. I don't have a marble countertop, but I do have a marble backsplash..I sealed it with 511 sealer from Home Depot, as was suggested by my fabricator and my backksplash installer. Same product I used on my granite. Just wiped it on and then wiped off the excess. I was told once a year would be sufficient. KA:)...See Morefinestra
