do I have to seal my deck?

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum, but I will be around here more as a new homeowner!

We have never had a deck before and are a little unsure how to take care of it. Our home inspector (and most people I know) have said that it needs to be pressure washed and then sealed with some kind of sealer (but not Thompson Water Seal, which several have said is awful stuff). But, my in-laws came over to see our new house the other day and both recoiled at the idea of sealing the deck "because then you always have to seal it." They also said they love the look of grey wood.

Is this true? do I really not have to seal the deck? If I can avoid using chemicals, then great--we back up to woods and I would like to avoid using too many chemicals because of all of the wildlife we have around. On the other hand, this is not exactly a new deck, and it just doesn't make sense to me that you can leave untreated wood outside and expect it to just last forever.

Thoughts? thanks!!
