Used a few orphan blocks, the Snowball novelty blocks received from a 2011 BD Swap here on the forum and a couple strips to 'make' them fit. A little patriotic and a little fun. The other quilt will be the same layout but where the large blue stars are in this one, the next one will have gold stars so the boys can tell them apart. Size is approx 57"X59" at this point.

Thrifty and fun! I'll bet the boys love them. So many fun fabrics to tease the senses. Love the border choice.

LindaB, I'm hoping the boys will love them. I think they will. Right now, this is just the top and I plan to put the other one together this week. I looked at fun fleece fabric for backing today, but nothing struck my fancy. Might have to pull out some larger pieces of novelty fabric I have and see what I can come up with. :-)

Using blocks that are on hand is a challenge for me, but also very fulfilling in that they can be used in a project that is close to my heart.....that of giving comfort.

One thing to keep in mind for anyone considering this machine: it is very powerful. If fingers got in to the roller area it would really, really bad. The machine comes with a protective wooden riser and tray that has to be in place before the machine turns on: This does make it harder to get dough in that is slightly too thick -- with the hand crank you just push the dough against the rollers -- no way to do that with this model. Some people (especially in commercial settings) disable the safety to make things go faster and be less fiddly. But those rollers go and would be unforgiving to anything caught in them. As for power comparisons: the motors they sell for the handcrank model run around 100W. The stand-alone Pasta Presto electric model with non-interchangeable cutters is around 85W (after seeing it, I would not recommend it, it's underpowered, glacially slow, and limited in cutting options -- go for the add-on motor). The Imperia 220 Restaurant is 190W. You may have noticed that we leave the cutters on even when doing just dough. That's because the motor connector you attach to power the cutter is a pain to attach -- you have to get the spindles of the roller and cutter aligned just so or it won't go on.

Linda, that John Deere quilt is beautiful. The black and white background is perfect! It really makes the tractor pop. The quilting is beautiful! Did you do that free motion or with a computerized machine on a frame? I've seen John Deere fabric before at various places... I'm not quilting this weekend, but I did go to sit and sew last night... I made Hummingbird cake and everyone loved it. There were only 7 people there last night, quite a change from the 19 last time. Apparently some of the ladies said there were too many people last time and got huffy and decided not to return, but we had a good time anyway. I worked on a card for an uncle whose birthday is today and who I will see tomorrow... I printed pictures and text on card stock and sewed them on the machine instead of gluing... Have to put a few finishing touches on it tonight and it will be ready to go. My Bernina is in the shop because it developed a problem... when I hit the thread cut button, the needle got stuck down and the screen said "check hook system". I cursed it out until 5 AM one night and couldn't figure out what was going on so I took it to the Bernina place and it's been there since Wednesday. The repair tech called me today and said he couldn't get the machine to repeat the problem (of course!) so I walked him through the steps.... put the machine on straight stitch, moved the needle to the right 4 places, shorten the stitch length and sew a few stitches... then hit the button and start swearing when it malfunctions... he did all of it except the swearing part while we were on the phone and it did malfunction for him. He said it seemed like the thread cutting blade was dull (really? I wore it out in 2 months?! I did buy it used, but it only had 10 sewing hours on it when I bought it... I've had my Brother for 5 years and haven't worn out the cutter on it yet), and that it would be 60 bucks if that is the problem. He's going to call on Monday with a final determination. It stands to reason that the sewing machine would break though... 3 weeks ago, the dishwasher started leaking all over the floor, 2 weeks ago, I dropped my beloved vintage food processor on the kitchen floor (well knocked it off the counter) and the power button broke (but I replaced it with the identical model from Ebay), and now the sewing machine... I'm losing one appliance a week it seems! I'm scared to use anything now! I'm spending all the money I was going to use for more Bernina presser feet on replacing and repairing things I already own! The good thing is that I really loved my previous machines before I got the Bernina and kept them as back up, so I don't feel too lost! This is why we have multiple machines! The group I do sit and sew with is having a quilt retreat day on 10/19 and the quilt is going to be a window pane disappearing 9 patch so I'm considering doing that... the only problem is that I'll have to get up at 5 AM to be there by 8 and I usually don't go to bed until then! Donna I machine sewed the quilt blocks and then my husband framed them with frames we bought from Hobby Lobby at $10 a piece. The ladies the fabric came from did not quilt, but they did sew clothing and that's where the fabric for the blocks came from except for the tan/white floral neutral that I used from my stash. The older fabrics that belonged to my friend's grandma and great-grandma will be donated as I do not use old, old fabric in my quilts as I feel that would shorten the life of the quilt using 40 to 60 year old fabrics. Some of the fabric used in the framed quilt blocks developed holes in them during the handwash cycle in the washing machine, so the fabric is very, very old and delicate, and I did not feel it would be wise to use it in a quilt as I like my quilts to get a lot of utilitarian use. November & December lotto blocks done & mailed! Pieced baby charity quilt - hopefully today will finish piecing the back and maybe get it basted. Need to patch DH's quilt from his grandmother. Found some fabric that matches pretty well but that old fabric fades in the strangest ways. We use it all the time and it gets laundered often, so whatever I do will be fine! Sharon, I did get a Featherweight, but this time we are flying to Mexico from Arizona so not taking the motorhome. Oh well ... I will get to do a little quilting stuff while we are at my mom's in Arizona. Usually I just cut several quilts for her and get them in bags with the patterns. She is a quilting fiend and does several a month for Project Linus. She doesn't like cutting (neither do I), but it helps her out. Love that Falling Charms pattern - have added it to my "to do" list! 7 Days and counting to the wedding - next Saturday. Family starts to arrive on Wednesday. WOOHOO. Mostly ready. Sue

Yeah, well, I didn't make the Snowballs, and the granny squares were made before the second surgery.....besides, how difficult is it to feel those squares nestle together and the same thing for the stars. I do admit to sewing on pinheads, getting a bit close to fingers while sewing and rotary cutting and using the rip-it tool more than I normally would, though. I must give DH some credit too in giving his opinion to some of the 'auditions' I've put out. LOL

Not want to see you? I wouldn't be able to 'see' you (or tell who you were), if I were there unless you were smack dab within 8 - 10 feet of me. Besides, I have a plan to have my laptop going full time and be at my sewing machine working on my 'retreat' project while y'all are there. I even have a project in mind. Maybe some of the rest of the gals that cannot attend will be able to do the same thing. :-)

Funny... I had the same thought as Jen...your quilting does not appear to have been hampered due to your surgeries...you are doing great.

Btw: Your July lotto blocks were mailed on Monday, you should have them this week.

Small glitch but it's ok. Abbi has requested that, if possible, the gold star color be changed as gold stars usually represent someone has died in combat. Even though the boys wouldn't know that, I sure don't want to do anything that would make her feel uneasy, so I'm glad I shared my intentions with her. The quilts won't be as much alike as I had planned, but, that's ok. Hopefully, I'll have the 2nd top completed tomorrow.

That's awfully cute and an inspiration. My youngest grandson is a very precocious three and past the point of 'baby' designs and this strikes me as something a little boy would enjoy with all those interesting geometric figures.

Thanks, Calliope. One of the boys is probably just beyond the baby stage and the other one will be shortly. There are enough animals, cars, trucks, etc in the novelty fabrics to carry it past being baby.....I did think of that and the reason I opted for the Cars fabric for the border.

For the backing, I'm hoping to pull from my stash and sew some pieces together. I 'accidently' have been buying fabric when I'm supposed to be using up what I have, so will have to rectify that action. LOL

How cute! Good thing you made the blue stars quilt first.
If Abbi is still here, maybe she can write each little guy's name and draw a picture or write something on a block on each individual quilt - help them know who's quilt is who and feel closer to Mommy.
This is very sweet of you and a great use of the blocks.

Marsha, Abbi hasn't been in the states for a few weeks now, but I'm in touch with her through FB. I hope to have these quilts done by the time she has her next leave. I plan to let her decide which one should go to which boy. She can't really see what's on the novelty fabric in the pictures, but I don't know if that would make a difference or not. We'll see how that goes. :-)

Love 'em Sharon!!!! The Cars fabric for the border is really cute, all of the boys in my fam love them, some girls too. I never knew that gold stars were symbolic.

I'll be running around while everyone is having a ball at retreat, but, it'll be fun to be working on a project at the same time. Lately, I'm crocheting an afghan for a gift and embroidering my bluework snowmen. Maybe I'll be far enough along to start on the quilt blocks.

Glad your eye site is good enough to enjoy quilting!

Ok, got the next top completed. I don't remember what I had in mind with the red, white and blue blocks that are in the top corners. There were 3 of them and it looks like they might have started out as a D9P but I couldn't find a 4th one. Anyway, made them into what you see...and they sort of resemble a heart, you think? Glad it's done as I'm running out of spunk.

Yeaaaa for me....more orphan blocks out of my containers! Did you notice the 2 centers are granny squares? I had five made, ran out of fabric to make a 6th and couldn't figure out a design for five that I liked, so the boys get 4 of them.

The boys quilts are all done and thanks to Beverly and her friend, they are backed with blue camo (we're saying the blue represents Abbi's Air Force) flannel, quilted and pillowcases made using the backing, with the cuff like the borders and the trim matching the binding of the quilt. The timing is perfect as the boys are here in town for Thanksgiving (even though mom isn't) and gramma is having Parker's birthday on Sunday so we'll do the presenting then. I cannot thank Beverly enough for all she's done. May she be blessed abundantly.
