Design issues with the 'stone' switch plates on backsplash
Comments (16)Or what about plain ole' cheap beige or ivory plastic or painted metal? In addition to being completely budget-friendly, they'll totally fade into the background and you'll never 'see' them at all. If the faux stone ones are a good match, they'll have a similar 'fade into the background' characteristic. And if they're *not* a good match, you'll have spent a lot of money for a not-good match. Not to mention that some of them have a decdedly 'plastic' character to them -- so I'd recommend seeing before you buy. ORB or copper, while pretty, will call attention to themselves, which is probably not what you want. Consider also that 90% of the electricians working in my market area don't bother to install outlets all at the same height, or even level! It's horribly frustrating if you're the kind of person who will notice....See Moreold grates/switch plates/outlet cover sources?
Comments (5)I've found that when looking on ebay, it's best to use the words "vintage" or "antique" in the search. I look for vintage grate, antique grate. Right now, there's quite a few hits with vintage grate. For switchplates, I've never found that you'll get alot of covers at one time and it takes alot of patience to build up a quantity. So, I shop at classicaccents.net. I've purchased also from rejuvenation.com, but the switchplate covers are about the same, just cheaper from classicaccents. Do you live in a community that has architectural salvage stores? Because grates typically weight alot, often being made of cast iron, you can save on the shipping by shopping in store. That's the way we've purchased the grates that we have purchased. We're in greater Chicago but I've gone to salvage places across the country. Are you looking for other hardware pieces? If so, try the exact name in your searches....See MoreWhite or ivory outlet covers/switches?
Comments (4)I really hate the existing ivory switches/plates in our house. In an addition we built a few years ago we went with very simple white switches and plates (on walls that are mostly shades of green) and I like them much better. They just seem cleaner and all-around less dingy (which may be more a factor of the age of the existing switches than anything else). But no more ivory for us. And it seems like if your appliances and trim are white then the white would be better....See MoreLooking For Switch Plate Covers French Empire Style
Comments (9)I love the ones in your top photo! Is there anything stamped on the back side to give a clue as to who made them? Keeler has some plates aren't actually FE, but could work: http://www.goingknobs.com/Brand/Keeler/Cat/Switch-Plates/Attr/Color%20~%20Finish|Brass%20Tones/View/All/...See Morechicagoans
