Interior closet walls

I tried painting over pickled paneling in the guest BR closet yesterday. It was difficult and looks like crap. I don't want to ask dh to drywall it. Too much work and he still has a good amount of mudding to do in two other rooms.

I want to remove it and put up something new. Based on a search here, I found these possible alternatives (they were from a basement thread):

* Melamine and vinyl-covered panels

* Unfinished paint grade plywood paneling, you can paint it

Any other suggestions? Advantages/disadvantages? I'm liking the idea of malamine or vinyl so I don't have to paint, but the plywood paneling would be a strong fit for shelving, etc. yes?

I also have a linen closet to do. Dh will make and install the shelving.
