color for mud/laundry room

This is what I have to work with... a mud/laundry room with cararra marble floors and goldish and brownish front loading washer /dryer , they have some silver in the front around the door and dials. The room opens up to the kitchen which is bluish-gray and white cabinets. There is a short narrow hallway between. What to do with laundry room walls....What to do with the walls?

.....Should I wallpaper them ? Louise Body has this cute Garden Birds wall-covering, it is described as stone background and candy colored birds. Is it too busy to put with marble? I am not even sure it would tie the marble floors and washer and dryer together. What about a damask or some other wallpaper that has some silver and gold in it, if you are aware of any I'd like to check it out.

......OR should I just paint the walls? What color would you suggest will keep a small room light and airy (except white or the kitchen color ) and tie in the marble and washer/dryer.

I love the whimsy of the wall paper. To me a laundry room should be fun as the activity that takes place there, often isn't.

The carrera marble is so neutral, you may not need tie it in at all, and the kitchen is far enough away that you can be more independent in the laundry. In my case, it is right off the foyer, but I went with a fun color anyway.

It's hard to know what would work as "goldish" and "brownish" isn't very specific. Perhaps if you posted a pic just so we could see the colors you're working with.

I also suggest visiting design-seeds for some ideas. You can either search for the color or just scroll through the images until you find a color of interest, then you can select it to see other color schemes that use that same shade. It's fun to play with.

Here's one scheme that combines the browns and gold tones with the grays.

Thank you for your response. Here is pic of a similar w/d finish, mine has more silver- gray accent across the top.

The kitchen is the second color from the left, which is BM gray wisp, I have 2 unused gallons of it because I was going to paint the laundry room the same as the kitchen. In the end I just didn't think it would be happy enough for me and I didn't like it with the w/d.

Now that I've included a pic of w/d if you could kindly give me your input about the bird wallpaper and marble with the w/d, the wallpaper as just too expensive for me to make a mistake ( 5 times the cost of the paint).

I wouldn't want my sewing area to be part of the laundry or the mudroom. I can't imagine that it would be all that enjoyable to spend time there. At least not for me. Once I get going on a project, I like to spread out. I also find I need lots of natural light to be comfortable when I'm working on a project. How much light would you really have? I think it would be easier to combine the mudroom and laundry area and then incorporate long term storage if you have extra room in that area. If you like to garden, it could also be space for a utility sink and grow lights or a potting area. I'd steal an extra bedroom and have my sewing area do double duty with a guest bedroom. I have a good sized laundry room and I'm always suprised when people ask why I didn't make the extra space into my sewing area. No one ever asks why I didn't stick the DH and his computer in there! It looks like you prefer to have the right tool for the job, so you have lots of tools. :) I think that your storage pieces (hooks, wall hanger, etc...) are too small for the things they are holding. See if you can find a way to increase the space between hooks, get a larger rack for next to the light switch so that the things on the rack are inside the rack and not spilling over. Do you use those cabinets for storage or for things you use frequently? You shouldn't stress over this, I can see you have a baby and that means lots of work. But if you are in the mood to decorate as well as rearrange, try to add your favorite color, maybe in a way that defines an area for coats, an area for detergent storage, etc...And get hooks that are identical, maybe in the favorite color.

The owner's retreat is the master bedroom and it was designed for the door to enter from the mudroom because my husband is a truck driver who works odd/opposite hours as me. The laundry room aslo has a door that goes into the master closet which connects to the master bedroom so we don't have to wake each other as we're coming and going. This also allows me to keep dirty/greasy clothes in a limited area of the house. We live on 5 acres of farmland so it's easier to limit the dirt to one area this way. I am considering a small bench next to the washer and dryer for sitting down to take off shoes, it is a 4ft space so does that seem sufficient for 2 people? This is the full house plan, however we did not do the optional drop zone because it seemed smaller than the 4ft area being left in the laundry room.

Thank you, Anna, Kim, and Tanya. Your advice is very helpful. RNmom, I think because straightening the wall in that bedroom would make it less than 11" wide? I'm not sure. It does look a little weird. And I agree on taking out the double sinks in the kids' bath. We had them in the last house and they still were only in there one at a time. :-) We are in the midwest also (just moved back after 12 years in the South), and I was thinking I would move the coat closet up and put it across from the lockers. We need a coat closet for the big winter stuff, and the one in the foyer we'd never use since it's so far away. I really don't need lots of cabinets in the laundry/mudroom. I think the closet would be more useful.

I'm crazy about the birds!
If your budget allows, I'd paper the room in a heartbeat.

Then paint the ceiling a paler tint of the same blue as the blue-breasted bird.

I really like the wallpaper and I think it would be very fresh and fun in a laundry room. Marble has a different size and style of pattern: small and linear. I think it would go nicely with the pattern on the wallpaper.
