GS and I will be there for a day, the 17th of June!

Any recommendations of what to see and do?

Just checked itinerary, and don't think we'll get off the ship.

Well if you have time you could just walk around the harbour, the Empress hotel is lovely and the Parliament Buildings will be all lit up. My gallery of Victoria pics.

Visiting Victoria, British Columbia....anyone familiar with it?

I've visited Victoria twice, it's a beautiful, touristy city. The Empress is a majestic hotel, I did not stay there, it is expensive. As for things to do, you can walk all around the downtown area, it's not that big. The inner harbour is pretty with the Empress a central landmark. Lots of little shops to browse in. I did not get to the Butchart Gardens but from the photos I've seen it is beautiful. One day I will go there. You can drive there or take a bus, it's not that far outside the city. There's the Royal British Columbia Museum which I found a little outdated in it's displays. THere's the undersea gardens, a boat in the harbour (I did not go on that). There are a few parks, one with a lot of totem poles, right next to the museum. There is also Beacon Hill Park, lovely to walk through and close to downtown. Chinatown is nice to walk through. Elmer, you asked: How could you know anything about this compared to Americans who have been to Britain for a few weeks/months or have watched British TV before? You might want to try one of these Victoria-related titles that I've read. I've enjoyed them, and they have filled in some of the knowledge gaps that I've puzzled over. All pretty readable as well. Victoria: A Biography - A. N. Wilson Queen Victoria: A Life - Giles Lytton Strachey Victoria and Abdul - Shrabani Basu Becoming Queen Victoria - Kate Williams Magnificent Obsession: Victoria, Albert and the Death that Changed the British Monarchy - Helen Rappaport Judith Flanders is an excellent resource about social history of the times as well. Other social history title suggestions: The Party That Lasted 100 Days: The Late Victorian Season - Evans and Evans The Art of Travel: Shifts and Contrivances Available in Wild Countries (1854) - a Victorian manual on how to travel when exploring the world. (Fascinating and on Project Gutenberg.) Life in the English Country House: A Social and Architectural History - Mark Girouard And there's always Mrs. Beeton's domestic handbook out there. (For a U.S. version, try the Beecher's The American Woman's Home (also on PG). How to be a Victorian - Ruth Goodman Another by A. N. Wilson: The Victorians (more global than just Victoria and her life). Queen Victoria was prolific in her writing of letters and journals, and there are several volumes of this around, if you're interested.

Glenda if you arrive at 7 and the weather is okay you would still really enjoy strolling around the innerharbour where your boat will dock for an hour or two.
I am not 'from' Victoria, but I lived there for 12 years - the Parliament Buildings and the Empress Hotel lit up at night is just spectacular! Awesome for people watching as well.
Parke Jr might enjoy getting a closer look at all the personal boats that are moored there now that he is a fisherman in his own right.
I hope you will be able to disembark if only for a short while.

I live there Glenda and like the others said, it will be worth a walk around the inner harbour and take in the lights. It's quite beautiful and the people watching is great. Lots of buskers in the summer as well, so lots to see. Typically the Tall Ships would be in harbour at this time, but unfortunately due to economic reasons they aren't coming this year. If you'd like my husband and I would be happy to give you a short car tour of city...

vanislegirl88, you are just the nicest to offer. But I think we'll probably do this: see what can we see from our balcony, as we go into port, and MAYBE venture off for a brief period of time.

I *just* got back from Victoria last night! My sister lives 2 towns over, but has the perfect view of Victoria from her living room window. I'll posts pictures to Flickr as I process them. You may have time to leave the ship to see the inner harbor. The Empress Hotel and the Parliament Buildings are there and they're soooooo beautiful. Too bad you don't have more time. Downtown is the bomb! LOL I love Victoria! I always thought I wanted to live on the lower mainland, but changed my mind this week. Victoria is cool, hip, laid back, relaxed, beautiful, calm...... My kind of place!! Oh, when your ship docks, look back and wave at Triangle Mountain. My sister lives at the top of it. She has a spectacular view.
