Semantics hahahahahahaha!
Comments (20)I love "might could", Nell. I get the biggest kick out of that, and I sometimes use it myself! I had thought that colloquialism originated in Texas. Quite a few Anglos in New Mexico speak with southern accents. Some are descendants of Confederate soldiers, the accent has been passed down through generations! There are a lot of relocated Canadians and descendants of Canadians in Massachusetts, Nancy. I agree that the accent for Anglo Canadians is similar to a Massachusetts, or New England, accent. In my own family, three of my paternal great grandparents came down from Canada. One of them came from an area in Nova Scotia where Scots Gaelic was the predominant language. (Martha Mora told me that my great gran probably came from Cape Breton, where Scots Gaelic is still prevalent.) One of my uncles, who married into the family, calls himself a Canuck. His heritage is French Canadian. He speaks French and English. There are some French Canadian communities in Massachusetts where French is the language people speak in their homes. I'm from Salem, which is near Boston. One of the Catholic churches in Salem celebrates two masses each Sunday in French. I attended one of the French services once. I used to know an older woman, who came from a French speaking Canadian family. She was born in Massachusetts. She didn't begin to learn English until she entered the first grade. She told me English was very difficult for her to learn because her parents would not allow her to speak English in their house! Lorna...See MoreCor!
Comments (7)Actually we were watching an American film based on a British story (The Bank Job) I thought of Resin when they used miles instead of kilometers in the dialog...yikes! We don't have cable or satellite TV, but PBS broadcasts some shows from the UK. Other than that it's DVD rental or downloads. With five people in the family we rent quite an eclectic mix. My oldest daughter is a fan of British humor; 'Are You Being Served', 'Faulty Towers', Father Ted, and 'Thermoman/My Hero' being her favorites. She wants to know if you can recommend other similar humor? Plus the US has American versions of your shows; 'The Office' and 'Life on Mars' are two I can name. Getting way off forum topic...oh well! Comments (18)Give me bean dip and sign me up. I had no idea one could make money this way. ;) I actually think the idea is kinda funny. Not so much with the solitary confinement gag. I had someone pull my leg in a similar fashion. I freelance. I drove 2 hours one way on a Friday to collect a check from a client. Badly needed, house payment due. I had money but getting the check would certainly allow some breathing room. I got there on time and had called along the way to make sure all was well. The gal who was holding my check found it amusing to tell me everyone was gone and my check was locked up. Maybe Monday. I was really stressed. I said you're kidding me. She kept up the gag just about a sentence too long to be at all funny. Then she produced the check and held it in the air. It was hard at that point to express any graciousness. Not nice....See Moreopening ceremonies
Comments (40)I enjoyed the opening ceremonies. However, I think NBC did a terrible job with the camera work. When they needed to be down on the floor, they were filming from the top of the stadium. Then they gave us close-ups of faces, but we had no idea what the people were doing. NBC also completely cut out the athletes' oath, which is a key part of the ceremony. They also cut out a tribute to the victims of a terrible terrorist attack that occurred right after London was given the Olympics. They had that interview with Michael Phelps instead. Given that the show was not live in the US, I can't understand this at all....See Morephyllis__mn
