Visiting Victoria, British Columbia....anyone familiar with it?

My husband and I have airfare credits from our Canada trip that was cancelled last month. We thought we'd take a long weekend (Thur-Sun) and go to Canada and have heard that Victoria is nice. My SIL recommended the Fairmont Empress hotel so we'd probably stay there. It looks really beautiful, but I'm not familiar with anything at all about Victoria. I know I can get tons of information online but it's always nice to get suggestions from people who've actually been there, or even live there or nearby.

Is anyone familiar enough with the area to recommend fun things to do? How's the weather there in late October, early/mid November? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!!

I've visited Victoria twice, it's a beautiful, touristy city. The Empress is a majestic hotel, I did not stay there, it is expensive. As for things to do, you can walk all around the downtown area, it's not that big. The inner harbour is pretty with the Empress a central landmark. Lots of little shops to browse in. I did not get to the Butchart Gardens but from the photos I've seen it is beautiful. One day I will go there. You can drive there or take a bus, it's not that far outside the city.
There's the Royal British Columbia Museum which I found a little outdated in it's displays. THere's the undersea gardens, a boat in the harbour (I did not go on that). There are a few parks, one with a lot of totem poles, right next to the museum. There is also Beacon Hill Park, lovely to walk through and close to downtown. Chinatown is nice to walk through. At that time of the year, the chances of rain are high, so bring a raincoat/umbrella for sure. All of the things mentioned already and great places to visit. If you get a chance there's also bus tours which are a great way to see the major places. Victoria is a quaint place.

Oh, and don't forget your camera.

I love "might could", Nell. I get the biggest kick out of that, and I sometimes use it myself! I had thought that colloquialism originated in Texas. Quite a few Anglos in New Mexico speak with southern accents. Some are descendants of Confederate soldiers, the accent has been passed down through generations! There are a lot of relocated Canadians and descendants of Canadians in Massachusetts, Nancy. I agree that the accent for Anglo Canadians is similar to a Massachusetts, or New England, accent. In my own family, three of my paternal great grandparents came down from Canada. One of them came from an area in Nova Scotia where Scots Gaelic was the predominant language. (Martha Mora told me that my great gran probably came from Cape Breton, where Scots Gaelic is still prevalent.) One of my uncles, who married into the family, calls himself a Canuck. His heritage is French Canadian. He speaks French and English. There are some French Canadian communities in Massachusetts where French is the language people speak in their homes. I'm from Salem, which is near Boston. One of the Catholic churches in Salem celebrates two masses each Sunday in French. I attended one of the French services once. I used to know an older woman, who came from a French speaking Canadian family. She was born in Massachusetts. She didn't begin to learn English until she entered the first grade. She told me English was very difficult for her to learn because her parents would not allow her to speak English in their house! Lorna

Lee - Up to a point I incline to agree with your antipathy to exotic plants in a Japanese garden. Perhaps it amounts to feeling uneasy with anything that looks somehow out of place because few things of that shape grow in the wild here? For instance, I feel a bit uneasy if I see Phormium Tenax or Pampas grass. I'd probably feel even more uneasy with a Monkey Puzzle tree, especially since somebody who'd seen them growing in their native habitat in S. America said they looked out of place even there. On the other hand, a restrained use of bamboo doesn't (to me) give that feeling. That brings me to what I'd call exotic artifacts. I wonder for instance, how a sleeve fence made from cedar lath compares with one made from bamboo? Here in N. America does the one made with cedar lath look more at home in its surroundings? I lean towards using the cedar lath. Coming back to the Bear artifact, I've got some more pictures of it (of them actually - it's a mother Bear & her cub). The carving is rooted in the ground - the owners told me that it used to be a big tree in their garden, & when it got too big, they had the top removed, leaving an 8ft high stump - and a young fellow then carved the bears from it with a chain saw. They said he did it in no time. When I consider those stone foxes with a red bibs round their necks that you see in some Japanese garden settings, it makes me think of the Bears as their western equivalent (though the red bibs don't suit!). Another artifact that I saw illustrated a year or two ago - I think it was in this forum - was a wooden post or tablet, carved in the style of Native Indian work, that somebody had positioned in his garden. He may have referred to it as a Stele, but I'm not sure. (It certainly wasn't what you'd call a Totem pole), It was in just the right place & it looked entirely at home - it was just as effective as a stone artifact like a lantern. Greetings from Vancouver. I'm having a terrific time, with special thanks to you all and your great tips. I've been walking all over this town, plus taking the bus too. It's wonderful. I visited VanDuesen, Chintz, Granville Island (and South Granville), plus Chinatown and most of the downtown-area neighborhoods. It's great. Tomorrow is the Art Museum and Queen Elizabeth park, oh, and Beach Drive too (thanks for that tip!). I haven't done my homework, so if anyone can help me cheat that would be great. Can I bring any plants/cuttings/seeds back to Seattle with me?? What about fruit? I'll go do some research online but if you know the answer feel free to chime in. :) Thanks again for the tips--they've really helped me have a better time. It's really lovely. Take care, Grant

Kitchens and the Caribbean; 2 of my favorite topics! I think you can find some inspiration by looking at vacation rental homes in the Caribbean. (I look on VRBO.com for homes when I visit St John in the USVI. I've also used windspree.com and Destination St John and there are many more. If you google villa rentals caribbean, you'll find links to lots of houses and they all include kitchen pictures. Yes it takes some digging but might be worth it!) Many of them have beamed ceilings, big paddle ceiling fans, and often with bright colors. Here's the kitchen from the beach house on Lovango Cay: OK this one's a bathroom but it shows the exposed wood walls and beams that I see in some Caribbean houses (this one is Just Enough on St John): These colors look so tropical to me! Christmas Cottage, STJ; and Starlit Escape; STJ: Starlit Escape is the first house I stayed at on STJ. The kitchen has cypress beams on the ceiling; kind of dark but very pretty: Reef Madness, STJ; beams, yellow, rock wall (common in many of the villas) HTH

Buchart (sp?) Gardens is well worth visiting. In the fall, it may not have the flowers of spring and summer, but it should have autumn leaves turning colors, etc. It's been years since I've been there, but I remember extensive Japanese gardens, within which Japanese maples are usually prevalent, so I'm sure there will be many colorful leaves.

We've been to the gardens several times, they are always beautiful and always crowded. High tea at the Empress will require a reservation in advance. Don't miss it though!

That time of year you definitely can expect rain and possibly winds.The bright spot is, fewer toursits.

Take a day trip to Nanimo and eat your weight in Nanimo Bars! There's a ferry from Vancouver to Nanimo so you'll be going that way. Have fun,,Kathy

The Fairmont is nice although I always stay at the
Swans Suites Hotel.

The temperature will be from 50 to 60 F and rain isn't unusual.

If it's still available in October there is a ghost tour of the city..check with the Visitor's Bureau which is across the street from the Fairmont.

We've been twice--April and the end of Oct. Believe me, April was MUCH better. It rained constantly in Oct. and there were only 2 tour buses running b/c there were no tourists there. We went to the Gardens and it was a total waste of time. I couldn't believe they would charge admission; there was nothing to see, compared to April when it was incredible. We sat in the gift shop w/ everybody else until time for the bus to depart. We had breakfast at the Empress Hotel and did the museum and tour of the city and immediate countryside. If we'd never been we would have enjoyed it more. If you can change your time, change it. The prices were sure down b/c there was just nobody there. The best thing about it was the ferry ride from Vancouver. The difference in going in Oct. and May was like black and white.

You can check online to see what's blooming at the Butchart Gardens at any time. Although this is probably the slowest time of year, something should be worth seeing there. The Gardens are also simply a great place to have a good walk, even without flowers in full-bloom.

We also liked the Royal B.C. Museum a lot. Not as big or impressive as others like it, but it presents British Columbia quite well.

Our favorite place (we visited a few years ago in mid-June) was a restaurant/tea shop called The Blethering Place. It's not as famous as the Empress Hotel, but its Afternoon Tea is wonderful and the atmosphere is authentically British. It's toward the eastern side of Victoria in a lovely residential neighborhood. I had the feeling that I was among locals, rather than a crowd of tourists.
