Disaster - Please Help

Just when I was going to ask you all to celebrate with me on my finishing of my double wedding ring quilt - disaster struck! I hand quilted the centers with a double feathered heart motif. Most of the motifs I used a water soluble purple marking pen (specifically for quilting). I pre-tested it first to see if it came off with water and it did. On 3 of the motifs I used a yellow crayola washable marker ( I had read a tip on this forum these worked and were less expensive). I also pre-tested this before using and it also came off with water. Upon completing the binding on the quilt I put my beautiful, brand new DWR in a cold water rinse in my washer. Swished a little, and spun the water out. All purple and yellow markings came off the front of the quilt. So what is the disaster, you ask? The yellow - somehow, someway transferred to the backing in perfect motif shape. I have large yellow hearts and some just yellow splotches on the back of my quilt!!! The quilt is still pretty wet and the yellow will not come off!!! Please help! What can I do? This is so weird as the yellow marker did NOT go all the way thru the batting on to the backing when I first marked it. HOw would the water make it go thru???? And besides, it is supposed to be water soluble. All thoughts and ideas will be appreciated. thx weaz

Maybe wash it with some detergent this time? I have washed out those markers from grandchildren painting on a tablecloth and it came out completely. Of course, it wasn't a valuable quilt. Good luck and I'll be thinking of you.

Oxy-clean? Biz?

If you're fairly sure the other colors are stable (prewashed, and didn't bleed), then soaking the quilt in one of these should help.

But then you will need to use a detergent in the wash water. Those washable markers are designed to be removed in the washer - that implies a detergent of some sort.

The marker package will have a toll-free phone number - call it! They want you to be a happy customer. Their solutions will be much better than ours.

Wow! you are in a pickle for sure! Even if you could afford a professional cleaner, doubt they would take the job. Is your roommate handicapped or just does not try to aim? The person should accept the fact he really needs to "sit" to use the toilet. If your roommate is not handicapped, make him remove the carpet and padding. Clean the area, etc. In my opinion, plan on being booted out of the apt. when the landlord sees this. The only way I see that it can be cleaned is to rip out the carpet and padding (carpet should never be next to a toilet), clean the floor and wall. Go to a pet store and buy the enzyme that kills urine odor and clean the area. You really need the enzyme. Bleach works well for urine odor, soak everything with it and know that it will bleach whatever it comes into contact with. Part of the sheet rock wall may need to be removed too, especially if urine has soaked through the paint into the sheet rock. The urine no doubt has soaked through the carpet into the padding and into the flooring beneath. Removing carpet may not be enough, most likely will need to remove sub-flooring too and replace with new sub-flooring and new vinyl tile. Do not do anything to the sub-flooring without checking with the landlord first or you will be in big, big trouble. Is there a way you can find another roommate that does not have this kind of problem? Reason I ask is that regardless of how clean you get the area, it will be in same condition shortly here or in another apt. Good luck.

You mentioned the deep golden color, I know it would be a long shot but I wonder if amber shellac would get you close? You can then coat with dewaxed clear shellac and overcoat with almost any clear In old homes many times everything was done in shellac In my old home I have redone the floors using shellac as my clearcoat Have been quite pleased with the results(I wanted to maintain the old world look and feel, many turn their noses up at shellac as they do not really understand it and the web does not help as it is full of much misinformation on the subject) My floors came out looking like old floors in really great condition instead of like brand new modern flooring which was exactly what I was hoping for. Shellac may not be quite as durable as the modern finishes But it offers a warmth and glow that is hard to beat and it is easily repaired, a quick wipe with denatured alcohol with the proper brush or just add a little more shellac to a damaged spot, it melts into the old and dries very fast.

Vith, the infra red works like a paint gun but covers a larger area at a time. I may see if I can rent one at Home Depot. I am also going to try an area with stripper today and see how that works. Sombreuil, I will check out the thickness, but I have a feeling it is 3/8 inch tongue and groove. Do they even make a 3/8 tongue and groove? It is not the T-1-11 siding, at least it doesn't look like the pictures in google images. It doesn't have the vertical grooves like those shown in those pictures but rather just looks like normal plywood. I'm not sure what is meant by "delaminating" ... is that what is happening when the paint comes up and it has a thin layer of wood stuck to it? Looking at the entire project, ripping off the old plywood makes the most sense, but that will take convincing Mr. JT. There are two windows involved that I believe are nailed in to the existing plywood. So I have two questions at this point ... 1) If it is 3/8, would it make more sense to just leave it in place and install some other sort of siding over top of it ... Hardi vertical or lapsiding , Hardi shingles, or something of that order? It's not the most attractive house as is (single story with no architectural details or charm). And ... 2) Optionally, provided I can get the cracked paint off, if I repainted with a good quality primer and paint (BM Fresh Start Hi-Hide and Aura Paint is what I'm using on the rest of the house), how long could I expect the paint to last? I really appreciate all of your comments and suggestions!!!

Happy to share. That's so nice of your garden center to offer to do that, but I don't know how you'd transport it back home without jiggling it back out of place. IMVHO, you just need a few baseball/softball-sized rocks. you can adjust the soil so they're a bit lower but the rocks should stop the wobbling while they get re-rooted. Although I always urge against watering in sips, a just-repotted Sans can be an exception for a month or 2 until it gets over its' jiggles, since moving it around really makes them wobble while they're not yet root-secure. Slowly/gently sprinkling water all around the surface, not just in 1 spot, should let you do that for a short time, without too much water gushing out and overflowing a drip tray. If it makes you feel any better, none of this is an emergency. I've had plants that laid on the ground for a couple weeks while waiting for me to get them in a new pot. And this past winter, I had 3 scrawny little plants that just didn't fit in the pot, so they laid under my potting bench outside, bare-roots-in-the-air from November until a few weeks ago & they seem OK, just a little wrinkled/shriveled.

You might try washing it with a Shout Color Catcher. These attract running dyes in the water. Perhaps by using that, when the water/detergent get the yellow to 'run' the color catchers will attract it rather than letting it settle back into the quilt.

Goodness sakes, guess I'm not the only one who can't sleep. Well, you are all right. Upon re-examination, I read the crayola box and it is "washable"! I interpreted that to mean water-soluble. - NOT! I will bite the bullet and use detergent on my brand, new quilt. I, too, thought of using the color catcher and will throw one of them in just in case. The colors are all pastels, so the quilt fabrics shouldn't run - just that awful yellow marker!! Who'd thunk, huh???? Oh well, live and learn. IMO the crayola washable markers aren't worth the aggravation. I'll go back to my purple quilt markers and pay the higher price. Thank you all for your support. I'll let you know what happens. weaz

I have used detergent on my quilts and it hasn't harmed them so don't worry about that. I'm glad to hear the crayola is washable. Good luck washing the marker out of your quilt and let us know when we should start celebrating your finished DWR quilt!

I had to wash one 4 times to get the pencil lines out. Soap and warm water! Didn't hurt the quilt a bit. I think my mistake was putting it in the dryer after the first wash. But they finally came out. Cotton is amazingly resilient!

Please update us after you've stood over the washing machine wringing your hands with worry and anticipation (as I certainly would).

Have you tried Dawn dishwashing liquid (the original blue kind)?
Did the people on the 800 number offer any help with removing the yellow?

Murphy's Law is alive and well in my home! When I went back to the washer to "re-wash" the quilt with detergent, my washer decided to stop working. After 2 days of DH attemtping to fix it - we shot it and put it out of its misery! Went tonight and bought a new one. Washed quilt - ALL IS WELL!!!!! All markings came out and it is now drying on the line in the laundry room!!! Of course, it just became the most expensive quilt I've ever made - but who counts pennies at a time like this???? LOL. Thanks for all your support. I'll send pics as soon as I can. weaz

Clarion - I'm so happy to hear the quilt is well, LOL.

And didn't you deserve a new washer? Sometimes they do just get old and shooting them is the best solution!

So am I correct in assuming that while Crayola washable markers are not water soluble, they do come out with ordinary laundry detergent and a trip through the washer? If not, what was the difference?

And could you explain why you don't want to wash a brand new quilt, in the washer and dryer, with laundry detergent?

I use the most gentle, fragrance-free powdered laundry detergent I can find. I adore the way the quilt puckers after it's been through the dryer.

Glad your quilt is OK. I always wash the quilts I make regular detergent and cycle. I know they're not going to be treated super special and I want to know beforehand if any part needed extra stitching.
