I got this in an e-mail today and thought I would pass it on.Hard to imagine!

This will boggle your mind, I know it did mine!

The year is 1908.

One hundred years ago.

What a difference a century makes!

Here are some statistics for the Year 1908 :

The average life expectancy was 47 years.

Only 14 percent of the homes had a bathtub.

Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone.

There were only 8,000 cars and only 144 miles

Of paved roads.

The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.

The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower!

The average wage in 1908 was 22 cents per hour.

The average worker made between $200 and $400 per year .

A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year,

A dentist $2,500 per year, a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year.

More than 95 percent of all births took place at HOME .

Ninety percent of all doctors had NO COLLEGE EDUCATION!

Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, many of which

Were condemned in the press AND the government as 'substandard. '

Sugar cost four cents a pound.

Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen.

Coffee was fifteen cents a pound.

Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used

Borax or egg yolks for shampoo.

Canada passed a law that prohibited poor people from

Entering into their country for any reason.

Five leading causes of death were:

1. Pneumonia and influenza

2. Tuberculosis

3. Diarrhea

4. Heart disease

5. Stroke

The American flag had 45 stars.

The population of Las Vegas , Nevada, was only 30!!!!

Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and ice tea

Hadn't been invented yet.

There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day.

Two out of every 10 adults couldn't read or write.

Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school.

Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter at the local corner drugstores. Back then pharmacists said, 'Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind,regulates the stomach and bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health'

Eighteen percent of households had at least

One full-time servant or domestic help.

There were about 230 reported murders in the ENTIRE ! U.S.A. !

And one year before my Mom was born. My Mother told me often that she thought she had lived through the most wonderful time in history because of all the things that were invented. I find myself thinking the same thing about my life...that's it so wonderful because of all the technology.

gardener1908: Well that is a good question. I kind of committed myself to a plan already. It has been very cool for us here in Kansas for the last week and the forecast is for more cool weather. I am planting lettuce and spinach. My neighbor planted spinach and lettuce last week outside and they are coming up, so I said "Let's Try!" I put in 3 rows of spinach 45 feet long, space 12 inches apart. Then I did the same thing with a variety of lettuce. These greens are on the shaded side of my Cherry tomatoes. I will be letting the tomatoes go until the freeze takes them. I am still picking them like a crazy man! Although, they have slowed down. I am debating about ripping out some peppers in there and plant something. I have lots of plants that don't have any peppers on them. I figure, if they at least don't have small ones, they aren't going to make it by late October, but I haven't decided. Outside I have transplanted lots of broccoli and cauliflower. I have radishes and beets coming up. I also finished planting more radishes, beets, and turnips. I am going to try to till another area up and plant more beets, chard, lettuce and more spinach. I figure, I already bought the seed, I have the ground ready, why not? I plan on picking the spinach as baby spinach. This will be the first time for me, so I am sure I will learn alot! I think the first thing I would have done was go to system restore and done a quick restore to the day before when all was well. You could still do that actually and that would restore the settings to the correct ones. If it happens again do that first just select a time/date from a day just prior when everything was ok. Go to Start Select All Programs Select Accessories Select System Tools Select System Restore here is a good site with info on system restore in Vista http://www.5starsupport.com/faq/vista-system-restore.htm I am wondering if this somehow could have had something to do with the original dates for daylight savings time? It was originally set to occur Sunday April 6th but this year of course it was changed. There was a patch put out through windows updated to fix this issue. It just seems strange it happened so close to that date. Do you have all your current windows updates done?

I was happy with the end result of the Barker cabinets. I thought they looked good and the finish seems to be very good--no damage in the year or so we had them. I actually saw them again when we visited (sold the house to a friend) and they still looked new at the two year mark. We had one place where edge banding, trim and cabinet met and the colors were not quite right. My GC made it work with some extra cover panel or something. The drawers opened and closed beautifully. My GC grumbled a bit about the door sizing and it being difficult to adjust them perfectly, but again he made it work. (He was a carpenter before he became a GC and made my bathroom vanities for me, but wouldn't do a full kitchen because of arthritis). The countertop is honed marble. I wanted a light color and Dh and I both really liked the looks of marble. I tried to find a more sensible substitute but we were never really happy with any of the other options and everything else was actually more expensive than Carrara marble--which was dirt cheap for us, almost as cheap as IKEA butcher block. We decided that we would be okay with scratches and etches. (Also Carrara can be rehoned in place, which reassured us that if we needed to make it look new for resale purposes we could) I loved that sink. It's the kohler stages 45. I wanted a second sink, mostly for the rest of the family to wash hands and get water to drink, but could not fit one in. The stages with two faucets filled that need nicely and functioned beautifully for food prep, etc. I think for induction you want a dedicated circuit and 40 amps? The appliance forum here would have the answer or someone else may chime in. I just know that out of all the great things in my kitchen, my induction range is the one I miss the most. And yes cast iron works. Anything that a magnet sticks to will generally work with induction. edited to add:. Thanks for your kind words. Those boards were probably never meant to be exposed as floorboards, but would likely have had a linoleum or rugs or oilcloth for low maintenance. There's no reason not to have them as finished floor now, however, if you can live with the dust-attracting gaps! If they're pine, it's quite hard to get a paint to wear well, because even old pine is a bit soft and scuffs easily. I think if I were you I would finish them with Rubio Monocoat, which now comes in a variety of stains, which you might find wears better than a paint. It's lovely stuff to work with, absolutely no VOCs, and you only need one coat, so although it's expensive there's no waste, you won't be choking and crying on toxic fumes, and you'll be done in a day. My mother was three, living in NYC then, but soon to move to rural RI to get away from the city's diseases and crime. Her grandmother and uncle were already infected with TB and would die on the farm. One of my mother's first memories was when she nearly fell into her grandmother's grave while attending her uncle's burial; they'd dug both at the same time as the second death was imminent. I have a photo of my mother at the butter churn with her grandmother in the background (smoking a clay pipe!).

Mom got a superior education in a one-room school. Her parents moved back to the city she was 13. The high school principal said he didn't know where to place her beacause she tested out of all their curriculum. She hated the city. My grandmother's answer to my questioning why they'd left the farm puzzled me until I was an adult. She said, "The bulls were getting over the fences." (Do you understand? Remember, my mother was 13.)

I thought this was very interesting. My grandfather was a farmer and in 1901 he took eggs to the store and took the value of them in groceries. I find it hard to realize what the prices were then. I do know, though, that wages were very small, too.

I've tried and tried to post the pic but so far haven't succeeded. Photo bucket has changed a great deal.

I still didn't succeed so I'm going to email it to one of you and ask if you would mind posting it for me
