800 years later and i feel fine, well sorta

my pc is 7 days old. yesterday the year in my pc (vista home premium) was 2008 but this morning it was 2808, yes you read that correctly 2 8 0 8!!! the month and day were correct. this caused huge problems opening/launching any software as the security certificates were, well, out of date! i could not accept or ignore this problem and was unable to do anything. i had to reset the year 91 years, 1 month at a time, it took 5-6 minutes.

question 1 - any idea how the year was advanced by 800 years? is this a common problem? anyone hear of this ever?

question 2 - i spent an hour trying to figure out how to change the year reading menus and trying stuff but only by going 1 month at a time could i reset the year. thankfully vista only allows a year of 2099 so i did not have to start at 2808. why vista goes to 2099 is beyond me, anyone think vista will be running in 2015? HA! so is there any way to change the year in like 2-3 seconds like i can with the hours or minutes or seconds?

question 3 - there appears to be an internet time sync option that gets the time from any one of several sources. this is supposed to keep your date/time correct. silly huh? oh, just off by 800 years! so in control panel, date time icon, there's a tab called internet time. there's a check box called "synchronize with an internet time server" and the choices are "time.windows.com" or "time.nist.gov" or "time-nw.nist.gov" or "time-a.nist.gov" or "time-b.nist.gov" . any idea which is best? due to the problem i unchecked the box so no sync occurs. is it better to just not sync with any web site?

any ideas?

I put in the address to my lan router for time sync. Let the router get time from the closest hop on a manual check of the ip's of a traceRt to my isp. 2nd hop for me.

NSCHLOSS - I installed (18 months ago) similar to the pictures above, EXCEPT I went one step further. Where she has the blank panel above the two drawers, I had my cabinet maker do a third drawer there. It was tight, and we weren't sure if it would end up being a fake drawer or a working drawer until we did the actual install. But, I really wanted a utensil drawer there if at all possible. And I got one... when you pull the drawer open, the actual drawer behind it is only 2" or so deep, the front makes it look like the normal 6-7" deep. Just deep enough to put non-combustible turners, tongs, large spoons, etc. for cooking. I don't keep rubber scrapers or even wooden spoons in there just to be safe. So, hows this been working in reality? I would defintely still do it for the handiness of having the utensils there. Every once in a great while, the jumbled utensils catch briefly beneath - but a quick jiggle and that addresses that. And sometimes, when I have three burners or more going, I will open up this drawer to aid in ventilation - not that it needs it necessarily - but, just to be cautious. It never seems to get very hot beneath the cooktop. Other than that, it's perfect. I'd definitely do it again... Although, I will caution - should you have a problem with the cooktop within the warranty period, I suppose they could argue that you have an improper install and deny any warranty claim....I decided to take that risk. Oh wow, I am so overwhealmed. I had a busy few days so couldn't get on at all, and there are so many responses :-). You guys really made my day! It's so neat seeing so many other people from my neck of the woods! Jalsya6 - I hope your reno is coming along great. Doing it yourself adds a special element that can't be measured in dollars. It's a labor of love. I see friends (and even friends of friends) donated time in our lighting. I see my grandpa's lifetime of expertise in flooring and the window. I see my brother's love in our archways and our backsplash. And they all imparted knowledge and skills to my husband that he will have forever and is already paying it forward by helping others with their home projects. Not to mention the confidence boost - he feels like he can tackle anything now. Some things just can't be measured in money! mpagmom - funny you mention drinking glasses! People who have never been over before always go for the upper next the fridge and find all our coffee stuff and mugs there. The espresso machine is right below that. We put the drinking glasses in the next cabinet over to the right on the other side of the range hood. It's a pivot and 2 steps from the dishwasher - so easy. The mugs are a few steps away but no biggie because with the handles you can carry 5 at time. We find the set up works well though. Again thanks to Rhome during planning for reitering the dire importance of having ALL my dishes close to the dishwasher. Another "best thing I did". Our plates our in a drawer btw, and I love it! Athomesewing - I actually fired our first custom cabinet guy (and lost the $1500 deposit) over that window!! We faught for months because he INSISTED that I could not get away with anything larger a 5' window there and have it look okay and have enough storage. Evidently to him storage = wraparound uppers. Yuck. That window is 8' wide and not compromising even one inch on that is another one of the best things I did. We bumped it out like I had seen 2 other folks here do, and I just adore the extra space there. My broom closet is 13.5" wide with a 1" filler to the right to allow the door to open. The actual opening of the cabinet is 12", and yes, it's the perfect size! I have found it no issue whatsoever to not have any landing space by the stove. I carry the food over to where I will be working with it (for lets say a turkey) or else directly to the kitchen table (for casseroles). I suspect that if you put in countertop there, you may find yourself not using it. Lisa_a - the hutch bottom is 51" wide. The 6 drawers are SO useful - coupons, bills, reciepts, batteries, etc each have their own drawer. They are way taller than they need to be though. In the final version-that-was-supposed-to-be they are shrunk down to a few inches tall. The actual drawer inside is very shallow - like 2" high and they were going to build taller drawers up to the height of the drawer front if I used it and found them to be too shallow, but I found they aren't. Feel free to steal whatever you'd like. I can even give you a full spec sheet on this hutch and the shorter version if you'd like. I drew up the plans for all of these cabinets on my own software. I included a pic of the outside of the window that we bumped out - the design was grandpa's, the inspiration was from GW, and the work was hubby's and grandpa's. So fun! Like many happy appliance owners I don't often write rants or praises about them. Three years in I'm getting along great with my 36" CC. I bought it through Trevor both because he is local and his reputation for service. Fortunately I've never needed to test the factory response or service. I installed the range myself. When it was new they came out with the "small pot burner". I wrote to the company and asked for one, and they sent it, no fuss, no muss, no bother (and almost no contact-- perfect!). I put it in and since then everything about the range has worked perfectly-- no more burned oatmeal. If I had it to do over I'd get the griddle rather than the grill, but I have no one other than myself to blame for that choice.

I am planning a kitchen reno and will be getting marble on island and soapstone on the perimeters as I like that combination and contrast. I do think it depends of your own personality too. If every small etch will bother you, it is not for you. I realized I won't be very much bothered because I was reading about some threads on sinks here and I was amazed the number of people who said water spots on SS bothers them. I have had SS and porcelain and never noticed all the little things that bothers others. Now I try to look for those water spots and frankly I have to really think about it and go looking for it to find it. I personally think nothing can match the beauty of marble and to me nothing can substitute for it. Sure it will etch and may have some other perfections over years but I can live with that considering with passing years, I will have a lot of imperfections - wrinkles etcs to match the marble :). I like a lived in home as opposed to showroom perfection.

Most isp modems have a built in router. Some don't but they're included in most as the norm for simplicity and security.

All routers need time set to half way synchronize with the world wide web and most will reply to your computer asking the question 'hey buddy, you got the time ?

So you could try typing in your routers ip number in that list of time servers on your vista computer.

Somehow it glitched and possibly a reboot would have fixed the year. The bios on your computer is actually the official time keeper for your computer as it has a battery backup. It tells windows what time it is at boot.
(maybe your battery is loose? or you accidentally messed around in bios and scewered the time?)

umm, well the bios is tantamount to me performing brain surgrey so that sure isn't the problem.

loose battery? well for several days the pc was turned on and off and a few today and other than 1st thing today the battery is keeping the time.

so the modem's (router?) ip is the ip i get for my pc? nah that can't be right. several times the ip address was the same but i changed the password for my isp and in the modem today with att's help and with the new password the ip address was 2 different sets of numbers. so what would the modem's ip address be?

i suspose i could just leave the box unchecked so no time sync occurs? more curious why or how it happened. no easy way to reset the year? i figure the way i did it is the only way but i hoped for an easier way.

most routers i've used are at either;
http://192.168.1.1
or
http://192.168.0.1

Which are private address's only usable on local networks. The router uses a privite ip# inside house wires and a www ip# for the outside wires.

There's a couple more but unpopular. 172. & 10.
1. seems to be most popular.
you can go to www.WhatsMyIp.org and on the left margin is a link for More... that will show your www ip# and the Lan ip# for your computer - or not, if you dont have a router. ...mine;

I think the first thing I would have done was go to system restore and done a quick restore to the day before when all was well. You could still do that actually and that would restore the settings to the correct ones.
If it happens again do that first just select a time/date from a day just prior when everything was ok.
1. Go to Start
2. Select All Programs
3. Select Accessories
4. Select System Tools
5. Select System Restore

I am wondering if this somehow could have had something to do with the original dates for daylight savings time? It was originally set to occur Sunday April 6th but this year of course it was changed. There was a patch put out through windows updated to fix this issue. It just seems strange it happened so close to that date.
Do you have all your current windows updates done?

afaik yes all windows updates are done. i have it set to do them w/o my need to control it. if it says it has updates i do them. i'll save your email. seems like this is not a common problem nor is there a way to directly change the year as you can with the day, month and time.

i got this reply from another bb. i tried this and it works!

fyi -

When you click the Change date and time... button a calendar will appear. Click the top (April 2008, for example), then click it again and again. Each click will zoom out until you get to a range of years. You can then select the year group you want (2000-2009, for example). Each click on an item will then zoom in to the year, month, day, etc.

That's funny, because sometime last week I had a similar
problem. Only in my case, the time went backwards 100 years, to 1908! My virus software didn't work, and other problems. I went to the clock at the bottom right, double clicked, and retyped the correct year and everything has worked fine since.

I was going to ask if anyone knew what the problem was, but I got busy and forgot about it until I read this just now. It was kind of scary and I fretted for awhile before I got it fixed. I don't remember just what day it was, but it could have been connected with the daylight time as ravencajun suggested. I doubt that I used the computer on the 6th, and it may have been Mon or Tues when I turned it on.
