Comments (5)My mother was three, living in NYC then, but soon to move to rural RI to get away from the city's diseases and crime. Her grandmother and uncle were already infected with TB and would die on the farm. One of my mother's first memories was when she nearly fell into her grandmother's grave while attending her uncle's burial; they'd dug both at the same time as the second death was imminent. I have a photo of my mother at the butter churn with her grandmother in the background (smoking a clay pipe!). Mom got a superior education in a one-room school. Her parents moved back to the city she was 13. The high school principal said he didn't know where to place her beacause she tested out of all their curriculum. She hated the city. My grandmother's answer to my questioning why they'd left the farm puzzled me until I was an adult. She said, "The bulls were getting over the fences." (Do you understand? Remember, my mother was 13.)...See Morewhat to do with old windows, glass intact
Comments (6)Hhmmmm...I'd love to have that problem! :) Ideas... * You can paint scenes in the panes and hang them in a room that doesn't have enough/any windows. * You can build a structural frame of 2x4's and use the windows as the wall material, making a small greenhouse. * You can build coldframes using the windows as the lids. * You can hang them, one or a few, in any outdoor openings Like our outdoor porch/entryway...we have a tall brink pillar and a half wall between that and the house wall. It leaves us with a big opening above the half wall....you can hang windows in there making a faux wall...so to speak. You may have the same situation indoors. * Use them on a deck...take out a few bannister poles and fit a window in there...giving yourself a little bit of a wind break as well. * Turn one on it's side and put hooks (or old doorknobs)on the bottom board, making a hat/coat rack. * Replace the glass with mirror and hang in the house. * Hang a few on a back fence and train a wisteria (or other trailing plant) to climb along the tops of the windows. Oh my...I'm sure you can find much better ideas online. Just be sure to use them! What a treasure. Good luck- Lynette...See More1908 Folk Victorian White House in Need of Trim
Comments (2)I like how they painted the window frames a dark gray blue. Maybe do your window frames in a dark blue and pick out some details in blue as well. Perhaps paint the gable end in blue. Paint the ceiling of the porch haint blue....See MoreIntact Progressive Era house (1911)
Comments (19)I'm curious about the front entry and room. Is this where callers would be entertained? It appears the "family/living room" is on the second floor. My grandparents' home was built around 1900-1905 (small town in southwestern Wisconsin). The entry area was large enough for a large hall tree and a settee but not an actual conversation area. To the right as you entered, through double pocket doors, was the front parlor. This was where they would have entertained callers. Off that room, through another set of pocket doors, was the back parlor that was less formal and used as the family living room. And then directly off that through another set of pocket doors was the dining room....See Morejlc712
