Do you like your sewing machine?
Comments (44)I have an old pre-WWII model singer treadle which I use when I feel nostalgic. When I was in HS I made petticoats to go under poodle skirts with it..and made pretty good money. Also made most of my own clothes. I also have a Necchi Elna which is about 40 years old. It works beaufully, but does not handle heavy fabrics well. Tension problems..it won't climb over the seams. I don't do much sewing anymore, but the maintenance man told me to keep it..it's all metal and made to last....See Moreyour favorite sewing machine & serger??
Comments (6)It might be a good idea to set a budget. There are good quality basic machines for under $1000. If you want to spend under $500, you are probably looking at a reconditioned trade in. If you want an electronic machine, you will be spending over $1000, on up to the price level ngmnewlywed listed. But it is not necessary to spend that much to get a decent sewing machine unless you want all the bells and whistles including advanced embroidery capability. I am a part time student at a fashion design program, and very few people in my classes have a machine like that. There is also the issue of getting an industrial machine. They sew much faster -- but do cost more. You might look online at Allbrands to see what is available. On the other hand, having a local dealer is a distict advantage when you have questions or want support....See MoreCleaning your sewing machine
Comments (10)Well between my DH and myself we have cleaned both my serger and my regular machines. DH used "canned air" to blow a gentle stream through some tight spots....and other than that he has adjusted timing and things on them all. I do get them served "professionally" when there is a major problem but that has only happened once or twice in all these years. There are some great books on cleaning and repair...check out the local library....call and ask a librarian to pull a few books on "general maintenance of sewing machines". It will save time and they will be able to tell you what they have (or if they had to request anything). You should read what it says in the manual you got with the machine...just to see what they might warn you NOT to try. (OK I'm one for not following things to the letter sometimes). Good luck. Comments (6)I am not a sewing machine expert, but I do make a lot of quilts. Occasionally, like everyone else, my machine does what you are describing and usually a quick cleaning or re-threading fixes the problem. It is not normal for a 5-6 year old machine to be doing this so it sounds like it time for a trip to a service place. It's worth it to reduce the stress it's causing. Like the previous poster said, get an estimate so you can decide if you want to repair or replace! You said it doesn't matter if it's the top or bottom thread. Do you mean it does it with both? From a trouble shooting perspective it does matter which it is so if it's one or the other it would help to know that. Is this machine new to you or have you had it a while? Did it ever work OK or has it been doing this as long as you've had it? If you bought it used, and it's never worked for you, then this might be why the last person got rid of it! But if it used to work fine for you, then it can almost certainly be fixed. What's the model? There may be others here with similar problems. Try posting this on the quilting forum too be cause there are lots of quilters with Brother machines and they may be able to help if they know the model. Good luck!...See Moredamascusannie
