Hi all! I haven't been over to this side in a while and didn't realize this post had become active again. YES, the project is underway. We are wrapping up the presowing activities and will get the seeds into the containers next week. Thanks so much for your encouragement and ideas for subject integration. So far we have taken all of the containers and measured cicumference of the 2-liters. One of my standards is for students to realize the relationship between circumference and diameter (pi). They figured it out for themselves by measuring a variety of containers and seeing how many times the diameter fit into the circumference. We compared class data and they all realized that no matter the size of the container, the relationship was the same. Now, don't you think the kids are going to remember this much better than pen and pencil? Hands-on and driven by natural student interest at the same time - take that NCLB! Although I only teach the math, the science teacher is teaching about endangered plants and animals and they are planting the endangered coneflower. The language teacher will also be integrating the unit. For math, the students will measure and record data on a line graph (another standard). The kids are very excited about it. We are going to plant some annuals for quicker bloom, too. I've already started taking pictures and will have some to share soon. Again, Thanks for the support! Nikki

I tried to post last night and the site wouldn't let me. As Jessica said, the rubber mold on the jar needs to get hot and soften so it creates a good seal. I just put the lids inside the rings and put everything into simmering water because then I can just take my tongs and pull out a lid/ring combo and put in on the jar. I also never heat the jars. If they are washed and you process them 10 minutes, they don't need to be sterilized. Of course, right after I told Jessica I almost never get a broken jar, I put some dilled green beans into the canner and got a broken jar, LOL, she's a jinx!! I've not had a broken jar since. I just wash the jars, put them on the counter on a towel and when the jelly is ready, ladle the hot jelly into the jars. It heats the jars enough to avoid thermal shock and the resulting breakage. And yes, Shaun, you can chop everything in the food processor, unless you want all the pieces to be alike. Just chop them coarsely if you want those bits floating in the amber jelly, or else your jelly will be more "muddy" and have little pieces. It won't hurt anything but it would look different. And I've always frozen the chopped habaneros and used them because I can't grow them year round so I get a bunch when they're in season and chop them up and freeze them. No reason why you couldn't freeze the rest of the stuff too, it cooks in the jelly anyway so it's already softened. Annie

Hello, been lurking a bit. Lots of good info here, thanks. FWIW, I agree that if the things you can't change are right and there is room in the price to do the rest ... thats a pretty good place to be. I knew the minute we walked into our current home, it would be ours, more than 20 yrs. ago. We had looked at a few dozen as I recall but the search was over when we got here. Since then we've added several investment props to the pile and since last fall have been looking for a new joint for us. Found an REO that is the only house of hundreds that can tick off every item on our list. Trying to convince the bank that they should stop holding on to it has been frustraiting, aggravating, stressfull etc. but now it is finally fun. They are offering counters in less than 24 hrs. and moving proposed closing dates up. Still not moving as much in price as they'll need to yet but it is vast improvement. Guess submitting the roofing bid and the well test did the trick :-) It kinda feels like I'm the lone bidder. Its got great bones and for us, a great loc. (acerage close to where we need to be). Its way more than we need but the lot, loc. and subdivision are pretty near perfect. Some minor damage from the eviction but I'm pricing that in and will order the full blown insp. once we have a deal. I was at the auction, I know the number ... they might get it but I'm thinkin not. There is a lot of inventory out there.

I didn't get anything on the link, but I LOVE Paula Deen!

Whenever I can, I love to watch her on the Food Network and I have The Lady and Sons and The Lady and Sons Too.. or however she spelled "too".. two.. whatever.

When we went to Savannah a few years ago, I tried to get to their place to eat, but there wasn't a table to be had.. boo hoo.

I bet she is a stitch in real life!

Paula Deen was a star with a lot of people before she ever saw the bright lights of Hollywood and took a role in "Elizabethtown," now showing at local theaters.

Deen, who is currently enjoying the status of the Food Network's most popular personality, stays busy with her two restaurants in Savannah, her TV shows on the Food Network, her magazine that should premier next month, and her busy speaking schedule.

She will be in Birmingham Nov. 17 for two appearances, both benefits for Hannah Home Shelby County.

The first is a ladies luncheon and holiday bake sale at The Club at 11:30 a.m. Patsy Riley, wife of Gov. Bob Riley, will be among the guests at the luncheon.

The luncheon, themed "A Recipe for Hope featuring Paula Deen," will be $50 per person. All attending will receive the first issue of her magazine, Cooking with Paula Deen. The magazine is being published by Birmingham's Hoffman Media.

That evening Alagasco will present a cooking demonstration by Paula Deen, who will be assisted by Birmingham chef Clayton Sherrod. The cooking demonstration will be from 6 until 9 p.m. at Metropolitan Church of God at 2800 Metropolitan Way. Tickets are $75 per person. There will be open seating. Box suppers are available for $10 each. Doors open at 5 p.m. All those attending the evening presentation will receive a copy of Deen's latest book, "Paula Deen and Friends."

Deen, who began her career in food in the '90s when she prepared sack lunches that her two sons delivered in Savannah. It was through this venture that she named her business "The Bag Lady." While she had suffered for some years with agoraphobia, she overcame this and opened The Lady and Sons restaurant in Savannah.

That business today has thrived with a lot of work on the parts of Deen and her two sons, now in their 30s. Last year she and her brother, Bubba, opened another restaurant near Savannah, called Uncle Bubba's Oyster House. She remarried in 2004 to Michael Groover, a tugboat pilot in the Port of Savannah.

She has received many awards for her entrepreneurial accomplishments in the past decade.

She has a small role in the current film, "Elizabethtown," where she plays the role of a strong aunt in a quirky family.

there's not a doubt in my mind that that will be a really fun luncheon! her personality is so warm and upbeat, i imagine that people are simply drawn to her. hope you and your friend have a great time! let us know how it went, ok?
