Kitchen hardwood floors question
Comments (11)There really are no rules about what colors go together, just personal preference. Some people do suggest going one or two shades apart for contrast. Have you scrolled through the Finished Kitchens Blog? You can get lots of good ideas from there. I'll link it below. We have just been clipping photos out and going to open houses to see what appeals to us. We ended up with Brazilian Teak Floors and Alder Cabinets with a medium brown stain. (both are unfinished so no photos to show you yet) I think the colors you chose sound good together but without seeing the Whiskey Glaze, I'm not sure. Do you have samples of each that you are holding up next to each other? As for the upkeep, I've had tile, travertine and wood before. All have their pros and cons but the upkeep on the wood was not a big deal at all. I used my built in vac for quick dusting and damp mopped once a week. We had plenty of spills but never any damage. Comments (27)Just finished cleaning the kitchen floor (on my hands and knees). I need to correct my ratio posted above. I used a couple tablespoons of white vinegar to 2 quarts of water. Did a section at a time with a well rung cloth followed immediately by drying with a soft towel. I've been doing this for the past eight years. The floors have a satin finish, so they have a slight shine. That has not changed. There are scratches from the cats' claws (even though I keep them trimmed), but that's part of the patina. Those of you using steam mops on wood floors might want to reconsider. Comments (54)Hardwood throughout my entire first floor, including the kitchen and all entry areas. Residents don't wear shoes in the house. Human residents, nor furry ones. :) Visitors are not given any rules upon arrival. :) Most people see you walking around in bare feet, or socks, or slippers, and immediately move to take off their shoes. Depending upon who they are and why they are there, I often tell them don't bother. For instance, if it's the HVAC guy and he's going to work in the cellar, I couldn't care less if he keeps his shoes on. As someone noted upthread, the nice thing about hardwood is that it does clean up very easily. I prefer the residents keep shoes off the floor b/c it does keep the floors cleaner, but there is no way I would ever make a guest remove their shoes. As far as damage - most of the damage to my floor comes from the toenails of the 20 pound furry lunatics who share my home. Yes I keep them short - no lectures on appropriate dog nail procedures please! They are young and love to run and play - nails dig in on cornering no matter how short they are. :) However there has been some damage from people in shoes who had rocks stuck in the treads. Most of it from the early days when the house was under construction because sadly my GC was an inconsiderate moron regarding things like this. TL:DR. It's hardwood. It dents. I do what I can to keep the dents to a minimum but don't stay up at night about it either....See Morerug in kitchen (hardwood floors) Yay or Nay?
Comments (6)I would steer clear of wool, too. As hard wearing as wool is, kitchens are sloppy places so make your life easier. I have a washable cotton rug from Hook & Loom in my kitchen. It's between my stove and my sink so it gets plenty of abuse. I have washed it at least a dozen times, colors have not changed and there's not a loose thread on it anywhere....See Morenatal
