Do You Have Plans for Memorial Day?

This Memorial Day I have plans to have the kids over and have a cookout at noon. I am still working on my menu. That will be about the extent of it I guess. How about the rest of you,

any plans?

don't know what we're doing...dh has his forced off friday so we actually have 4 says off!

just wrote a big check for the roof and new gutters, so really want to watch the cash flow...and we just can't leave kitty jack for more than one night, like we used to...and don't want to stress him since he's lost his sight...soooo can you say house clean?

Mother's day will be Monday for me this time. DD's son and his DW are taking my DD to an annual Antique Show, which happens to fall on Mother's Day this year. DD has already given me a gift, a hanging basket of Devil Wing Begonia (red) which has gotten to be tradition now. On Monday she is taking me shopping for plants for my yard and a 3 tier plant rack on my front porch. We may or may not have lunch. We both would rather shop for plants than eat. :~) Sue

I am THE planner of the family. Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, Birthdays, etc., all planned and hosted by me. I made a firm decision a few years ago though, one supported by my own mom, I have NOTHING to do with the mothers day plans. That is the one and only day that I simply pass the buck. I arrived at this decision on my second mothers day of being a mom. My family and I showed up at my parents house on Mother's day. Mom had spent all morning making a nice lunch for us, I had spent the better part of the day before making a nice dessert. My older brother had to be rushed to the ER due to a ruptured gallbladder. As we sat around eating dinner and waiting for updates from the ER I looked at my mom and said, "isn't this mothers day?!?!? Why did WE do all the planning and preparation?!?" So, to answer your question, I truly have no idea. It might be a Sunday like any other or we might be surprised with a gourmet meal....I just don't know. The only thing I know is, it is one of the only holiday get togethers that I DON'T (correction...WON'T) have to plan for or worry about. It will either be an awesome day planned entirely by my husband, dad and brother or it will be like any other Sunday.

Story about American immigrants, war, etc. : I know a man (uncle of a friend of mine - she calls him Uncle Billy), who is still alive now in his late 90s, who was in the US Army in WWII, and served with the army in Germany right at the end of the war. His family are "Pennsylvania Dutch". The "Dutch" is a corruption of Duetsch, which means German. Anyway, I know for a fact that his family immigrated into Pennsylvania from Southern Germany in the mid 18h century (they still have the records). He was raised speaking English, of course, but his first language was the Pennsylvania Dutch language, which had remained reasonably stable in PA for 200 years, and was still in common usage (I also knew his parents, who even in the 1970s spoke English with an obvious German accent) . It turned out it was still close enough to the regional German dialect in parts of Southern Germany in 1945 that he was able to act as a translator for the Army. He told me the story that, in a forest where there were still some German troops they were trying to get to surrender, a very young scared looking German soldier got the drop on him in a clearing, just the two of them, and was pointing the gun at him, and looked about to fire at close range. Uncle Billy said he automatically shouted "Don't shoot" in his first language. Of course, the soldier was from Bavaria, and recognized his own regional dialect, which was enough to get him to calm down and not shoot Uncle Billy. Jackie

What wonderful news, Allison! Rita, I can't wait to see your new house. Bacon Jam from Meathead, makes ~2 cups, takes 2-3 hrs (mostly reducing the liquid) 1 lb bacon 2 onions, thinly sliced 4 garlic cloves, minced or pressed 1 cup water 1/4 c inexpensive balsamic vinegar 1/4 c maple syrup 3 T packed brown sugar 1/2 tsp dried thyme or rosemary 1/4 tsp ground pepper splash of hot sauce optional Cut bacon into 1/4 inch slices and cook over medium heat until golden. Drain on paper towels. Pour off most of the grease, add the onion, cook until translucent. Add garlic and cook until fragrant. Add remaining ingredients, reduce heat to low, and cook until the sauce is thick. This takes quite a while, though hands off except for occasionally stirring, and works best if you use your widest skillet or sauté. Once it looks like jam, remove from heat and cool. Best at room temp or warmed. I usually double it and freeze jars for future use and/or presents. It was a huge hit last night. Nobody had ever heard of it!

Remember the Vets who came home and the POWs and MIAs. Our heroes in our country. That is the first thought I have and I spend the day with our Wounded Warriors who are adjusting to their new bodies at Walter Reed hospital. I am so glad I can. I am sad that isn't the first thing many people think of. It is an example of our dying culture. Maybe if the stores were closed our citizens might reflect less on the material things that go with Memorial Day. This is a better lesson for out children. I am sad that the majority of people do not put out a flag to show their support for country everyday. I am sure there are some of you who do but statistics prove that there are a high percentage of people who don't even know someone who has fought in our very nasty wars.

I have been trying to come up with a plan for the four day holiday weekend that won't have me worn out, but will have to do what I have to do.

On Friday we will go to the cemetery in Ohio (115 miles west) to meet with son-in-law at our daughters grave. Visit with sil and have dinner with him and drive back home.

Saturday I have a baby shower across the street to go to and after it is over we will go to Erie (99 miles north) to fetch my sister. Back home Saturday evening.

Sunday is the grand opening of the picnic season at our other daughter's home here in town. A big "to do" with about 24 people. My sis and I hope to be waited on there.

Then on Monday we make the annual trip 'back home' (130 miles east) to put flowers on our parent's and brothers graves. Back home Monday evening. Makes me tired thinking about it all...and my poor hubby does all the driving, plus taking care of 2 handicapped women. He is a gem!

I have a birthday party to go to on Friday afternoon. And another party on Sunday. Then on Tuesday, the Home where my special needs sister lives is having its first cookout. I don't have to cook for any of the events.....just show up and be a guest.

Either Friday night or Sat. morning we will be moving the cats to the country house. So mainly I plan to spend the time there with them, getting them settled in and acclimated. DH may be driving back and forth, getting the last few loads moved. Then Monday, depending upon how the 'girls' are doing, we may come back to the suburbs early enough to catch the parade there one last time. We've got a $20 off coupon for one of my favorite restaurants good for Memorial day, so possibly there for dinner. Get the trash out, and give the house one last going over before Tues. (settlement).

BBQ with relatives on Saturday, and being lazy the rest of the long weekend. :o)

YES we do...We will be celebrating our 46th wedding anniversary.

What kind of celebrating...??? I don't know...haven't even given it a thought yet.

Guess I'd better get with it...right...?
