Need advice on Cottage / Shabby Chic Girl's Room
Comments (14)Gwen, you're welcome and I'm so glad you enjoyed the pictures I posted. I think those rooms are dreamy. One of the things I love about the more "modern" decorating is the two-toned curtains. Also, when doing shabby chic or cottage, there is a lot of mixing of fabrics. Since you sew, I'm wondering if you can buy the too-short curtains, cut a little off the bottom or top, lengthen the curtains, and use the cut off fabric in bed pillows or chair cushions along with whatever fabric you use to lengthen the curtains? I'm not sure if that woule work or not but it's something to think about. That said, white is always used a lot in cottage decor and shabby chic. Lovely white window treatments are easy to find. One of the prettiest I ever saw I think was carried by Pottery Barn and they were a thin semi-opaque cotton, maybe a batiste. Along the top they were smocked. They were just yummy. I have Orange Peel walls too and I wouldn't hesitate to try out the stamping. Just grab any paint you have around and stamp something on there pushing hard and see what you get. You can have a damp sponge in your other hand ready to scrub off whatever you did. Another thing about the shabby chic look is that it's rather chippy and broken looking, so if your stamp didn't do a perfect print it might add to the charm rather than subtracting from it. I'd give it a try if the idea appeals to you....See MoreShabby chic look with natural wood trim?
Comments (4)I think your style will look lovely and you certainly won't commit a faux paux, , but it won't be "shabby chic", it will be more cottage or country. Shabby Chic (as Rachel Ashwell does it) is very heavy on the white paint. I have her books and looked through them after I read this, and the look could include a natural wood piece for interest, but almost everything is of the white/cream/pale pink/mint palette. With lots of natural woods and stenciling, I think you are after a different look. I am not sure what Swiss Country is, but your description does sound more "country" or cottage. If you have a bookstore near you, like Barnes and Noble, look in the home decor section. With so many books you will surely find one that shows the very look you are after (it will resonate with you), and then you will know what your style is called, well, at least by an editor and publisher! LOL Have fun and please show us pics of your work :-) Joanna...See MoreCurtains for DD's Shabby Chic Bedroom
Comments (27)Your welcome Judy. I have 2 tiny ballet dancers, 4 & 6, part of the reason I bought the tulle. I had such a problem finding WT's for that room. The windows in the room are caddy cornered, and part of the problem is one of the window's is boarded up from the outside. Our home is a work in progress. It has been a slow renovation/restoration, 3 years in the making. We found the windows in their room behind knotty pine paneling. Their bedroom is not finished, I still intend on hanging their tutu's on the wall. The tulle was meant to be temporary, but I really like how it turned out, and since we have so many other projects going on in the house, they will probably stay indefinitely. I will post pics tomorrow. I don't have any close-ups and the girlies are asleep in there right now. BTW, I am delighted to see your DD's bedroom and the similarities in my girls' bedroom. Perhaps this may mean they will still like it when they are 15? I could only hope ;-)...See MoreMy Shabby Chic store closing bargains
Comments (21)Susie - thank you! The doors are part of our new foyer/garage addition, and with the sidelights and transom it's a 10' x 10' entry. We stained them ourselves which was quite a job, and unfortunately the afternoon sun hits them pretty hard so we'll probably be spending a lot of time maintaining them, but I really like them. On a good night, you can see the moon through the transom. Allison, thank you so much. I was thinking it would be about 1 yard for each chair. Surprisingly, there were none listed on ebay. Guess I was hoping some people would want to make custom slips and sell the ones that came with the chairs, but it doesn't appear so. I love what I've seen of your style, and really admire how your casual and more formal furniture pieces work so well together. That's something I need to work on, since I like both. I can't wait to post pictures of other rooms soon and get advice for furniture placement and paint colors. Right now, almost all of the rooms have tools, drywall and flooring piled up in them, since we're just entering the finishing stage of the whole house remodel. I'm so looking forward to having my house back to normal and get to the fun stuff! I think I'll keep an eye on the Highgate table over the next week or so. It has such nice thick legs, and would make a nice coffee table. That will probably be my next post!...See Morevampiressrn
