Shabby chic look with natural wood trim?

I'm not even sure how to frame my question... I love the fabrics of what's called shabby chic: mostly white cottons, eyelet pillows, not so frou-frou battenburg lace trimmed curtains, etc... I also love white walls with natural stained wood trim and stenciling along the top. I hear that the shabby chic "cottage" look is mostly painted wood pieces. Am I commiting some kind of decorating faux paux by mixing the two? With the exception of a small painted shelf here and there, I really prefer natural wood grain. My house started out with dark rustic decor (dark paneling and rust colored carpet) but I'm gradually changing it over. We're painting the paneling (not the trim) and it looks great. I saw somewhere a description called "Swiss country" and it might have been closest to what I like. I know nothing about decorating styles or what's popular, so what do you think?
