My Poor, Bored Dogs

Holly, more than Tuffy, gets bored out of her mind at rodeos but she's young. She'll learn.

Tuffy has been at this rodeo thing for nearly ten years and knows the ropes: sleep to and from the rodeo, eat and drink when it's offered and fervantly hope someone messes up and ties you long enough to get your mouth on any animal running by...

What can I say?

Tuffy has rodeo in her blood.

Holly has much to learn.

For one thing, she is mouthy.

And she is impatient; she does not accept situations well.

Telling her 'no barking' really frustrates her.

And she always has a comeback:

For some reason, being on the road makes her itch.

I think it's a nerve thing.

She is only a year old so I hope she will grow out of it:

Then, to make matters worse, Tuffy ignores her and if there's something Holly cannot stand is being ignored. She's a little self centered that way:

What bugs Holly the most is the height issue. She can't see and then feels deprived; like she's missing out on something:

I don't think she will outgrow this problem.

Custer says she has four inches of fury under her.

Next week we will explore her inability to keep up as well as her obsessive need to capture and kill the windshield wipers in the truck.

Oh my gosh!! What a joy to see your critters today. I'm sitting here at work sniffing and feeling sorry for myself because I have a head cold - and here you come to put a big smile on my face. Thanks so much Lori! I love your pictures and the captions that go with them. The one with tuffy (and the horse in the background) is fabulous! Mighty Tuffy will save the day...little Mighty Tuffy is on the way....(needs to be sung to the tune of "Mighty Mouse in on the way".)

Hmmm. Dogs should be sleeping when they are not in the presense of their people while in the home. I do notice in my neighborhood that when people leave their dogs in the yard, free to their own devices, they bark incessantly. I would strongly recommend that you don't let the dog stay in the yard unsupervised. If you truly do want to fix this problem without collars or surgery and without a behaviorist then your best bet is to confine the dog in a bedroom or a crate with acceptable chew toys. Most of the time when people don't let their pets stay inside when they are not home is because of destructive chewing. That's why it's important to train your dog when it's a puppy what is ok to chew on and what isn't. Stuffed kongs and other good chewies will help with anxiety but it is not sufficient excercise or mental stimulation for a working terrier. I have a terrier mix and a bearded collie, both working dogs that need a great deal of excercise and mental stimulation and I'm always trying to figure out new ways to get them worn out. I would suggest a brisk 30 minute walk before you leave for work. That will tire the dog and his senses. Then he goes in his play room to chill until you come home for work at which time he gets another walk to tire him and his senses while you fix supper or whatever. Knowing that terriers are bred to search for rodents and whatnot and having observed how much mine yearns to dig in search for these critters, I periodically take him to the woods where I let him sniff and dig to his hearts content and it really is a pleasure to watch. I suggest you let your dog have regular opportunities to excerise this instinct that he was bred to have. If a person was trapped in a yard all day, everyday with nothing to do they would be bored out of their minds. Same with dogs. On days where weather doesn't permit a lengthy walk, or even if it does, I play fetch and tug of war and hide and seek with the dogs. I do so until the ball stops coming back. I run them up and down the stairs for treats until their tongues are dangling sideways out of their mouth. Then I give them a stuffed kong when play time is over and they fall fast asleep. Short durations of this excercise won't impact your lifestyle too much and it will make all the difference in the world to your pet. You've identified the problem, here are some easy solutions you can put into action today and I hope that helps. Not long ago, I did call the police because of a barking dog that one of the idiot neighbors left all alone in a kennel outside for a week while they were out of town and the dog whined and cried and howled all day and night. I don't know that it accomplished anthing as the dog continued for days.

They are so funny. We took our 2 knuckleheads on an outing Thursday, since that is our day off. Having barking dogs is new to us; these 2 bark if they hear anything outside or even at night if I am still up and they hear me in another room. So we went through the drive through with them, and seeing the people inside set them off. The next thing that set them off was a person walking along the side of the road. This person was a good 15 feet away from the edge of the road, but the dogs didn't like it one bit and started barking. I admit it, we called them numbskulls. Is that so wrong? LOL.

People also need to understand that there are many people that don't believe in spending money on a dog....The line of thought with them is..It is an animal.. meant to be outside and meant to fend for themselves. Take my dad, he loved his dogs, but he was raised at a time where people didn't spend money on shots, heart worms prevention and all that other "stuff". Families back then didn't have money to spend at the vets office.You did good to have money to spend at the grocery store. but His dogs were well loved and taken care of, he didn't abuse them. They were fed and kept warm, but that was it. They lived a long long time..both have now crossed the Rainbow bridge... My neighbor has never in all of her years of having dogs has only taken 1 of them to the vet...Her children who are younger than I was raised to believe the same thing. Animals don't go to the vets!! I could tell you cruelty/abuse stories from that family that would make you cry...but the pound here isn't interested... This type of mentality is very common here..I don't know if it is a southern thing or if other areas of the country has this same type of thinking. littlebit

Like redheads? They also tend to have allergies. The only oter ginger I had was a very smart and a very very quick cat too. We occasionally have mentally challenged mice who come into this multi-cat household. The three mild mannered tabbies we had never seemed to be interested. Both bella and Murphy see it a lot differently. Bella actually caught one mouse, that was under mu desk!) and Murphy spends a lot of time jut sitting in a certain spot in the bathroom...I do love cats, and Tuffy looks like a very sweet one. It is nice when people realize how important pets are to us, isn't it. We have one chihuahua, Spike who is very expensive. Heart trouble and glaucoma. He has lived with heart trouble for about three years now....we told the vet it would be in his financial favor to buy us a chihuahua to replace Spike and he said it made sense him. Spike is 16 1/2 now. kay

Beautiful furbabies! Is Holly a Welsh Corgi?

If so, tell me about their temperments. Well, aside from getting bored easily! LOL

Temperments doesn't look right but I'm too tired to check out the spelling.

Holly is a Corgi.
If you can believe the internet, she's a pembroke welsh and yes, she has a great temperment! Very smart; almost too smart. She's also very loyal.

I didn't get her until she was four months hold. We were her third owner. She came with a few problems, such as pooping on the floor. It took awhile to 'train' her and she' is much better. She still won't 'ask' to go outside though. She'll look at you expectantly or stand in front of the door and dance like 'open the damn door! I gotta poop!" but she won't bark or scratch the door.

It took her awhile to trust and respect us too but she's fine now.

Corgis are such characters.
When she is in trouble she rolls over and over then looks at you as if to say 'you can't stay mad at me cause I'm so cute'

She needs a lot of exercise. If she is left alone too long she finds things to do, like a child trying to get your attention and it doesn't have to be good attention.

I just think Auntie Liz needs to come and STEAL Holly so that she wont have to mess with all that rodeo height challenged stuff...

Ah, but Auntie Liz, do you have cows for Holly to chase?
She doesn't know she is little.
She thinks is a big dog too.
As long as Gabby or Tuffy is there to back her up, she is ferocious. But if they abandon her in a bunch of cows?
She panics.
And runs away.
Really fast.
So fast her back legs come up waaaaay ahead of her front legs. And there's a look of sheer panic on her face. The dog is a hoot I tell you.

The dog is hell on mice.
She hunts them just like a cat.
She takes it all very personal. Killing a mouse is simply not enough; she must DESTROY it. This annoys the cats a great deal for some reason. Especially when she brings a carcass to the house, like they do. LOL

Tuffy on the other hand, sooo resembles my Scruffy from 20 years ago....God I love when you post pics of that particular one Lori..thanks.

Get poor little Holly a booster bench so she can see over the wall!

After all, we've replaced two windows in the house here with longer ones so Harry can sit, in comfort, and still watch the outside world! LOL

Okay, I wanted one windows "lowered" for my own enjoyment, but the living room window is sized purely for Harry's happiness.

I love that "dog in the air" picture!

That picture of poor Holly trying to see over the wall is the saddest thing I have ever seen ROFLMAO! I am a sucker, and often lift Ruby up so she can see over stuff.
