Toolgranny-thank you! Pic Veggie Jar Quilt

In March I asked a question about background fabric for making a Veggie Jar Quilt. As usual, I got immediate responses & suggestions.

Toolgranny then emailed me to ask if I wanted all her veggies leftover from when she made her quilt. Of course, I said yes!

I bought the tomatoes and yellow corn & had the peppers. The rest of the veggies were from Toolgranny! I did buy the background - dark green Kona (as she suggested) and the brown for the wood look - that was hard to find something right, and I found this wonderful seed packet panel that I made for the back - well, that was like making another quilt. (It looks crooked - it is straight - we were getting hit with a sudden storm!)

I am giving this quilt to my DH Aunt & Uncle. He grew up on a real working farm, where his Mother traded crops for fabric at the general store to make clothes for the kids.

He still has a huge garden and beautiful yard. In her healthier days, his Aunt canned huge amts of food.

They will be so surprised when I give them this quilt next week.

I quilted it on my short arm Pfaff on a frame - all free hand. I am happy with the results.

MRG, it's beautiful! I love the "crates" on the bottom shelf. And the seed packet fabric on the back is just perfect. I know they will love it!

Thanks for all the positive feedback, it's nice to hear. :) Well, I have now started in on the pressure canning. I did get 12 pts. of Katie's Roasted Tomato and Garlic soup last week and 8 pts. of beef stock yesterday. Today/tomorrow it's chicken stock and chicken soup, then next week apple sauce and apple pie filling. It's kind of a relief to be away from the tomatoes for a while. :) And I am getting more comfortable with the pressure canning. I got the Presto 23 Qt. and the optional weighted pressure regulator. My gauge seems pretty darn accurate so far, but I love the ease and consistency of using the weights; I'm glad I spent the extra $20. I probably will can more tomatoes next year - I'm just a glutton for punishment! :) But I will probably spread it out and not do it all 6 or 7 days in a row. Since I don't really grow enough tomatoes to can, I buy them when I want to can. There's a great organic farm the other side of town (Petaluma, CA) that has been selling tomatoes $1/lb or $12/crate; I've gotten over 20 lbs. in a crate! They also sell the overripe tomatoes as "sauce tomatoes" for $5/box (about 20 lbs). So it's very reasonable cost-wise. I don't get the satisfaction some of you do by starting from seed, but it's still pretty darn satisfying. And as several of you have commented, it sure is all pretty to look at too. We're just wrapping up a kitchen remodel; my husband is about to start on the shelves in our small walk-in pantry. I can't wait to see all my jars and jars on my new shelves!!!! Kathy

Charlene, it's only me and the misses doin' the diggin'. I would say that most of the produce is sold at the farmers' market. It wasn't always that way, just a little smaller and the larger percentage would just be for us. We can really put away the Summer veggies between the stir-fries and the freezer. Heirlooms? I have a tomato that was grown by my grandmother during the Depression. Also, we enjoy trying a few other heirloom tomatoes each year. Seed for a very fine heirloom snap bean was sent my way this season. Unfortunately, the rabbit really liked those bean sprouts so only enjoyed a taste myself. Hope to do better in 2007. No deer in this garden so far. Rabbits and mice abound since there's plenty of cover and alfalfa nearby. Amongst the rows of peppers there are green onions. We are always sticking onions in here and there because they require so little space. Thanks for your comment on the corn but you should know that the more distant (and very tall corn) is an ornamental. Dang it grew! Wish I could grow sweet corn like that. There are sunflowers between the 2. What do the customers want? Well, a lot of them want something different from what they can get at the supermarket. And, so do we - so it works out well that way. They also like "pretty" . . . so we grow fresh flowers and other ornamentals and "pretty" veggies. IÂve learned that attractive veggies arenÂt always the most flavorful but what can you do? I have never seen fabric like these. Maybe because I never had a use for them........I do now! That quilt is just great and a must do for me. I too am on the look out for fruit and veggie fabrics. Maybe we should all do a fat 8th swap or something. Vicky

Love the way you finished that, with the black strips. It makes for an optical illusion so that the strips on the perpendicular actually look longer to me than the strips on the horizontal, but I knew they couldn't be. LOL. Makes that pattern just pop out at you. Sounds to me like you DD could get bitten by the quilt bug. That's how I got started, couldn't find 'just the right' throw for a daybed so ended up making it myself. The rest is history.

I'm just busting my buttons with pride here. Yours is better than mine. I love the crates on the bottom. Be sure to let us know how they took this. You put so much into it they should be thrilled.

What a great quilt!! Love, love, love the crates on the bottom and the different sized jars. Perfect back for this jar quilt. I am making a jar quilt for our youngest grandson and you gave me a great idea with the crates!

I think this quilt is unique and I want to show everybody what you did. It is outrageious fun and beautiful Also the sweet people on this site are so giving and kind to each other. Spectacular!!! Just love it! A Jar Quilt is on my to-do list and I have been acquiring the fabrics. Thank you for a wonderful example. Did you have a pattern? Where can I get it? Love love the crates at the bottom.

I love your quilt. I have always wanted to make one like this but that still hasn't happened. The bottom row with the crates is a nice touch. Your DH's Aunt and Uncle will love it. Great job. TFS.

Thank you for all the compliments. I did not use a pattern. I found some directions on the internet for making basic bug jars and toolgranny told me what general sizes she made-which was extremely helpful. I tweaked the sizes. The crates and basket at the bottom were to take up space~~but the basket fabric I bought (expensive at LQS) was so off grain, I spent 2 days trying to figure out how to modify the bushel basket I had cut out. I could have made alot of jars in that amount of time~LOL.
I had taken a workshop with Sue Nichols and used her methods for all the machine applique of the crates,baskets & their veggies. It was good practice!

I learned alot making this quilt - my first time sewing long sashings going across. I figured out that you are supposed to handle them like borders to avoid wavy-learned that lesson the hard way :-).

It was a fun quilt to make. If you google, you will find alot inspiration and ideas.

That is AWESOME!!!!!!!! Be sure to let us know their reactions. It sure brings back memories of our 'fruit cellar' with stone walls and floor with shelves full of goods mom (us kids had to help) canned.
