I'm very sad to-day

We had to have our Dear Benji put to sleep this morning. Our Vet told me on Thursday that he might live 6 weeks, maybe longer, maybe less. He had lymphoma, heart problems, cataracts on both eyes, former bladder stones and crystals. His nodes were swollen greatly from one end of his body to the other. He was itching and scrathcing much of the time as if he was hurting inside. This morning his heart weakened and he looked at us with eyes that begged to please do something.

My intentions were to be at church to listen to Ole Joyful take the service and I'm really sorry that I couldn't be, but that was the exact time that we were at the Vets with Benny. What a wonderful Vet, also, to help us on a holiday week-end.

Benny would have been 13 in a few months. We had rescued him from an abusive situation when he was 4 months old and we have to keep reminding ourselves that we gave him a good life and he gave us love to no end.

The Vet said he was a walking pharmacy and he was.

Hi nman :) So nice to see another super cold zoner! I wanted to back up the advice about not knowing til you try...I've been so pleasantly surprised with what I can grow here in 1b thanks to the encouragement (and the photo gallery) on this forum. I'm pretty comfortable pushing to zone 3 and I try zone 4 plants sometimes, but they take a little extra care. Just pay attention to the details like Sharon said (mulch, microclimates, happy soil, etc.). I find the wind and shade keeps things too cool for most plants to really thrive, but hey we don't have to budget for shade cloth either! And good snow cover works miracles! I start planting my veggies (seed) by May long weekend and sometimes the week before depending on how the spring is going. I had my peas in on May 12th last year and they did fine. I'm trying to pay more attention to the frost hardiness and germination rates of different plants to get them sown as early as possible. I wait until June to start planting any bedding plants. I started using the fabric row covers last year and was very happy with them...they really captured the warmth from the sun, let the rain through and kept the bugs out. There was a definate difference in growth between what was under the covers and what wasn't. I think its such a sweet satisfaction to grow in a cold zone because it's more of a challenge. So sorry to hear about your Blues, Nina. How very sad. Like Bluebars said, you will probably never know what happened which is too bad. Sparrow spookers are a great invention. I have to tell you a story about one this year. I had it on a house that the Blues started laying eggs in. After the 4th egg was laid Daddy Blue disappeared. Momma during this time was so very skittish. One day was a pretty windy day and you could see she didn't like the noise the spooker was making when the mylar strips would hit each other. She kept going into the box but then right back out several times. I decided to see what she would do if I took the spooker off so I went down and took it off. Got back to the house and looked at the nestbox and there was a TRES looking in the box. That fast there was another bird at that nestbox, nothing ever bothered it once the spooker was on it but as soon as it was down, bam something was checking it out. Needless to say it went back up immediately. I didn't intend on leaving it down, just wanted to see if that was what was bothering momma so much. I sympathize, rosies. You have not failed in any aspect, at all. You have done everything in your power to maintain your mother's health in the face of many obstacles. You must be very tired. I'm in year 3 of caretaking, too. Mum is losing her mental faculties now. Short term memory is waning, though physically she is quite healthy and fit, despite a stroke in '04 (did the mental damage). She has gone from an independent old woman, to one that must be really "cared for"... I get her up in the morning, see that she dresses herself, washes her face, fixes her hair. I prepare her breakfast, helpmeet does lunch, we split dinner. I put her to bed, see that she takes her pills, schedule the "bath lady", all the things that you have to do for an elderly parent. It's really hard! and you lose your own freedom. I haven't been out for dinner with the helpmeet "on the spur of the moment" for over 2 months now. I can't visit a greenhouse/nursery after work... I have to go right home, make sure the urostomy pouch is emptied, she has a glass of water, and that the sign is on the toilet reminding her NOT to empty the pouch again until it's time for bed. From the time I wake up until I go to bed I think about Mum and the next "chore" on the list... You have done as much as you can be expected to do. You've done it well, with love and commitment. It's OK to feel sad about what is changing in your life. But don't spend too much time feeling guilty even though it's part of the deal. (Tell the facility you would rather not have them shove so much garbage food into your mother. You are paying them to take care of her and you have every right to expect them to follow your wishes with respect to diet!)

My husband died on December 19, 2008. His funeral was the 23rd - This is my fourth Christmas without him. Any real joy in the holidays died with him - it will always been the anniversary of the saddest week of my life. Since then, I've also become estranged from one of my daughters, due to her mental illness and alcoholism. Today was quiet - son and I shared a turkey dinner I cooked. No tree, no presents, no decorations - one grandson called briefly, said he was "making the rounds" and would be over soon - never showed up. I told son if he had not been with me today, I would have been totally alone all day - might as well have just been any old day. Next year I'm seriously considering just taking a cruise over the holidays - never been on one, so maybe it's time to see what that's like. The secret is to not have very high expectations of the day.

I'm so sorry to hear this!! We had to do this only about 3 years ago and it was just like losing a member of our family!! Still miss "Lucy"......our 15 year old Golden Retriever! :( Your pets are a BIG part of your family!! Sympathy to all of you!!!!!

I'm so sorry Ivamae. Please don't feel bad, you did the right thing. He did have a long, and happy life with you. The amount of love you gave him, he will remember forever.

I always hope that animals from an abusive home, forget those memories. I pray that they do, and only remember the good ones, from their furever homes.

It is so sad, and so hard, because they are part of our family. It's the last thing we can do for them to show them how much we love them. I'm glad he's not suffering anymore.

I know my time is coming. Jack will be 16 in October. He's lost most of his vision, just shadows now I think. He's totally deaf. Had some back leg problems back around Christmas that I thought was going to be the end for him, but we got hip and joint pills for him and he's doing great now.

I don't want him to suffer, I can't stand the thought of it. I hope it's peaceful and in his sleep.

Understanding hugs of comfort to you. You did the last act of loving kindness for your beloved furkid and I know he is very thankful for that. He is now fine and with our Creator...God.....waiting to be reunited with you when that time comes.

I'm so sorry, for you and Benny. We love our pets like family. You gave him a happy home for many years, don't forget that. I have often said it is a tragedy that our pets can't be in our lives for many more years than they are. Hugs to you.

I'm so sorry, Ivamae. This is one of the reasons I don't push dh harder for a dog--I'm such a baby about the eventual loss. Do you have any other pets in the house to comfort you?

No, we don't have another pet but after awhile, myabe we will get another one. I don't know. I miss him terribly, but I know it was the unselfish thing to do, no matter how hard it was. It has taken me yesterday and to-day to gather up all his stuff and sort it all out. I didn't know he had so much. We have everything laundered and have put everything a way but just out of sight for now, just in case we decide to get another one. I was going to say " to replace" him but that would certainly be the wrong wording as no other one could ever replace him in our hearts but I'm sure our hearts are big enough to love another - particularly one that really needs a loving caring enviroment.

Thanks so much everyone for your support. It is a huge help.

I'm so so sorry to read this Ivamae. I've been there a few times and it hurts like heck. The greatest tribute you can pay Benji is to rescue another when the time is right. You must go through the grieving process which can take months but you'll know when it's time. Your next furry friend will be special in a different way because they all have different personalties and little quirks, but they all love unconditionally and bring the greatest joy. ((((Ivamae)))).

That's so sad but you did the right thing. Sometimes it's tough to be a pet owner and have to make the decisions that are best for our friends. Your memories of Benji live on and you'll find comfort in them. My best to you and Benji

I waited a little while to post my condolences, I know how hard it is, but please take your time to grieve. We really were put in a situation where we couldn't last time. You really need the time or you will never bond with the new one. You will know when the right one shows up, might be days,weeks, or months. Maybe longer, you will know.

I am so sorry IvaMae. I know how you are feeling, I lost 16 year old Chloe cat during the week. I keep waiting getting up to feed her and remember she is no longer here. Hugs
