Susan Boyle comes in 2nd!

Dance troup Diversity wins :(

I think Diversity deserved to win. I've been watching all of the shows (we download them each evening). Susan didn't do all that great on her 2nd song (Memories) and tonight she just sang the same song she sang in her first audition. Divesity did a different act each night and their routine was amazing and unbelievable. Susan looked so grumpy before the winners were anounced but when Diversity was announced as the winner she smiled and looked happy. Maybe she didn't want to win? Maybe she's had enough publicity? Who knows.

I was hoping to hear a different song too. I'm sure she would have lost votes because she sung the same song. In any case she can take her singing as far as she feels comfortable now.

This is the first I've heard her sing, and her voice is very good, but I can't help but think of Julie London when I hear that song. As a teenage boy, I would buy Julie London albums just for the cover pictures, but I really did like her singing as well, and her performance in The Girl Can't Help It is permanently etched in my mind. I think Susan might have done better to pick a different song. She says she is willing to get a makeover for British TV, and I hope she comes out looking more like Peggy Lee and less like Monty Python or Kate Smith. If she only did her eyebrows, it would help quite a bit. She needs to shed the Roseanne Barr look, unless she wants to be a comedienne. I love Roseanne, but not as a singer, and Kate Smith did not sing torch songs, AFAIK. Younger viewers may not have the Julie London association with that song that I have, and so they may view the performance differently. Perhaps she will be able to follow in the footsteps of Cesária Ãvora, who also never had a glamorous makeover. I guess you can tell I love makeovers! Need Help ...2nd Layout

Some people like a low Microwave because the kids can easily get their own snacks. But then if they're very little you have to keep them out, and if they're very big it's not an issue :) Whichever, most people prefer the MW near the fridge rather than anywhere else, so it's probably best where it is if you don't want it in the island. The other thing that concerns me a bit is stylistic. There's a lot going on with the cabinets on the range wall. Kind of like the hutch area and the hood area are competing for attention. I'm not sure the purpose of the pillar cabinets (if it's just that you like them and we talked you out of putting them by the range, that's a good enough reason). Personally, I'd simplify it and make that whole bank of cabinets the same height, letting the range hood take the height. I also would make the two corner cabinets the same height. It would be nice if the only ups were the hood, valance and fridge. But that's all personal. Some people like simple. Some people like interesting. I've only stated the above to give you a reaction to think about. I'm not saying that the design is bad. No matter what it'll be a lovely kitchen, and I think it'll function pretty well with the current layout (sometimes larger is harder :) )

Susan Boyle drops the 'F' bomb

The language doesn't bother me a bit, but there's something about her that never seemed quite genuine to me. The first time I thought that was when I saw the original clip of her surprising performance. That part was great, but the bumps and grinds that followed didn't seem all that compatible with her "simple Scottish village maiden" persona. Ditto all the wiggles and jiggles she's done since. And what innocent announces her virginity right off the bat? I don't pretend to know much about Susan Boyle. But at this point I'm guessing she could have some success as a recording artist (until the world remembers that they hardly ever listen to Broadway show tunes), but as a hero she just might disappoint. We shall see......

A Susan Boyle-like story from Korea

    Q

    Comments (6)
He does have a beautiful voice and his story is very sad. Sadder yet, is that a child (even a child so far away as in Korea) has to grow up in these circumstances. And if this one child did, so did many others. It's also sad that we feel so touched by him, because he has a beautiful voice, and yet not by the many others whose circumstances are just as bad but who do not have the beautiful voice. I know I'm rambling.. it's just that his story filled me with sadness. I hope he goes on to live long and well.

Shaun Smith also sang the same song he first sang. I think he did great and I think both him and Susan will have great careers.

Susan and others were asked to reprise their first songs - I think she did well and will continue to do so!

What a letdown, at least for me. I was sure she was a shoe-in. I'm disappointed for her. And for the world - what a great story and lesson. Whomever that person is that she said she wanted to be as famous as, I think she is! Yes, the dance troupe was terrific - extremely talented and I'm sorry for them that their win is probably overshadowed by Susan's loss. I still wanted Susan, though.

I'd buy her music in a second - keep on, Susan!

Susan and others? Shaheen (probably spelled wrong) and Hollie did not sing the same songs, they did different ones.

Yes others - Julian Smith and Shaun Smith also performed the same pieces they performed in their first appearance.

Sang "Who's Loving You" in his first appearance - which he sang tonight as well.....

If they were asked to reprise their audition songs, then I think that's a bad idea. The finale should be just that...something special. The dance troupe did a new routine. I'm not happy.

Seems she could have sung anything she wanted to....according to Piers Morgan, one of the judges. Where did you get your info, BP?

"Earlier this week, when I was on the phone with BGT judge Piers Morgan, I asked him what she should sing in tomorrow's finale. Without missing a beat, he said: "I would do 'I Dreamed a Dream' without any question." But can she repeat the song? "She can," he added. "And I think, if I were her, I wouldn't even hesitate because that is her anthem, that is what the world loves her for. And that's what she's best at singing."

But, I continued, asking Piers for his professional judgly opinion, wouldn't there be backlash? Doesn't that seem like a lazy move? "No, no, no, it doesn't work like that." And then he reminded me that season 1's Paul Potts did the same thing, singing the operatic "Nessun Dorma" for both his initial audition and in the finale, which he won.

But let's assume she does do something we haven't seen before. And I'm gonna assume she'll stick with the West End/Broadway theme. How about "Think of Me" or (screw the fact that it's a song for a male character) "The Music of the Night" from The Phantom of the Opera? Or Evita: "Don't Cry for me, Argentina" or the song Madonna added to the 1996 movie, "You Must Love Me"? Those would get my first votes.

Or, something else? PopWatchers, what do you suggest Susan Boyle sing on tomorrow's Britian's Got Talent finale? Should she just stick with "I Dreamed a Dream," like Piers says?"

I hope all of the contestants get jobs in their field, there was a lot of talent on that stage. I was disappointed with some of the acts that did not make it into the semi-finals when some stupid ones made it. To many of us here in the UK it seemed like there were 4 good acts in the semis and 4 stupid ones, like the judges "had a plan". I'm pleased with the winners, they worked really hard and I feel they deserved to win.

Does this mean it's finally over? I'm so sick of hearing Who's gonna win? The little kid or the old bag?

Bring back The Honeymooners, The Flintstones, All in the Family, Dallas and other classic television. I'm tired of fakeality shows, so-called talent competitions and the other infomercials.

Cynic..did you see SB's audition? Just asking. Curious.

I am totally bummed. I love her voice and thought she had it won.

Wow, Cynic. You have a tendency to be harsh, but that's pretty low. I've never, ever heard "Who's gonna win? The little kid or the old bag?". Millions of people adore her, and even those that don't have been respectful of her. At least from what I've heard. Sure, there have probably been some wisecracks similar to the above, but to hear you say you're tired of hearing it implies that it's rampant. I don't think so. Perhaps that's just your own feeling about it.

Since I don't have cable, I've just been catching Susan's performances on the usual morning shows and have thoroughly enjoyed hearing her and getting to know a little about her. She is to be admired...hate to hear she lost, but she's still a winner, ya know. :)

A question please: what cable channel is this British show on? I hope to include it in whatever package I'm thinking about ordering from our cable company. Thanks y'all. :)

Granlan I don't think you can get that channel on any cable package. We downloaded the show each evening an hour or so after it was over via bit torrent. Don't ask me how that works, Joe is the computer wiz around here.

Thanks Casey, but that news is a bit disappointing.

This old dialup system and my old computer is not made for downloading much of anything. :(

I was sure she'd win, after her singing "Memory" from Cats. I think she'll get a recording contract and still be a star. Look at Clay Aiken-he came in second and is still around.

I heard on one of the Sunday morning shows Susan already has a recording contract with Simon Cowell. Go Susan!!

Harsh? Low? Any more harsh than replaying these songs on every newscast and other shows? This is not news, it's entertainment and should be kept in perspective. I didn't see her audition "live", but since I do watch a little TV there was no way to avoid seeing it, over and over and over again. She has a wonderful voice, no doubt. But has nobody heard too much of a good thing is bad? There's a LOT of people out there who have wonderful voices. Jennifer Hudson's rendition of the National Anthem was fabulous, nay, every bit as good, if not better yet it didn't have to be replayed time and time and time again. Even TODAY as I was in my vehicle, what's on the "news"? Susan Boyle is going to record an album. Obviously she will, and should cash in while she can. The show's promoters are keeping her in the limelight and promoting her well. But now that her language isn't as prim and proper as purported, perhaps if someone starts looking into her background it won't be all peaches and cream and I wonder how will that affect her image if she has a skeleton or two on hangers? It's interesting how people change their opinions when things come out. I remember the hoopla over John Edwards. People, especially fans are fickle.

Now they're trying to make a big thing about the 2nd place guy on American Idol being gay. Wow, nobody would have guessed that would they? (insert rolling eyes here) So now I suppose we're going to have three weeks or more of that to listen to. I don't care. It's his business and it's certainly not news. I really don't understand it.

There's a place for these shows. Hey, I enjoyed watching Anna Nicole Smith's show! Watching the bloated babe trying to learn to drive and drunkenly muttering I need a PICKLE!!! It was hilarious. But at least it didn't have to be run on every other show ad nauseum.

BTW, I'm curious. Boyle didn't wear her leather jacket on her finale did she? Maybe that's why she lost?

A simple woman has a simple dream. It's a feel good story amongst all the other "ad nauseum" bad news stories that are on the news constantly. Maybe if you'd watched her entire audition performance, you might understand why she's so popular. Maybe you should just turn off the news altogether.

Cynic, there is a off button on the TV. Just push it and poof--all your problems are solved.

I know I'm in the minority here but she makes my skin crawl. There's just something about her that really creeps me out. None of you cared when she started dropping F-bombs but I'm sorry a 48 year old woman flipping the bird is just trashy.
I can't see her being popular except maybe opera or broadway. Please don't jump all over me, this is just my opinion.
    Donna

Granlan, I posted on this subject about an hour before Tally and had the websites posted where you could watch it. Somehow my post got ignored. :( It's okay, I'll get over it, I guess! There is a website www.justintv.com that played it live.

Cynic, I love your comments most of the time but for this woman it feels kind of harsh. She is really just a very innocent person who had a dream and it just feels bad when people bash her. I agree with LindaKathy. The media is so overrun with murders, kidnappings and people being horribly abused this story was so fresh and happy. I'm not trying to be antagonistic, Cynic, but I am curious why you would even click on this thread if all the hooplah over Susan Boyle is already driving you crazy? I don't understand why people feel they have to share a negative opinion.

I am so sad that she lost. I truly can't believe it. It's hard for me to believe that anyone couldn't see that someone who could generate so much interest isn't clearly the one with the most "talent," even if she had some iffy spots on her second performance of Memory.

She is so pure of heart she just really lifts my spirits. I can't wait for a CD and I hope she tours soon.

My biggest concern is, who is watching out for this lady? I sincerely hope someone, maybe someone in her family, is helping her through all of this. It must be horribly confusing. Has anyone heard any stories about anyone helping her?

Here is the link to her performance yesterday. She was so sweet when they announced the other winner and was very gracious about it. They asked her, "how does it feel to have lost," and she said without blinking an eye, "well, the best group won."

Oh for goodness' sake - Cynic's entitled to his opinions and to post them. This world would be quite boring if we all drank the same kool aid.

He's entitled to post them and we're entitled to discuss them...or is that not allowed now?

Discuss away kindakathy - no one's stopping you - but please play nicely.......

I was up in the wee hours a night ago with indigestion and heard part of a news story that she wanted to quit the show. That may have played a part in her selection and ranking.

    Sorry,
I shouldn't have said she makes my skin crawl. That wasn't nice. I take it back.
    Donna

Call me cynical (not Cynic), but I'm not picking up the pure-of-heart vibe at all. As I posted on another thread, something about those bumps and grinds and wiggles doesn't quite fit with the "innocent village maiden" persona.

Besides, I don't think we can make an accurate assessment of someone on the basis of a few appearances on TV.

I'm sorry you're sad, Bigbaby, but I wouldn't be surprised if she gets to sing for the Queen anyway. Stranger things have happened.....

If ya ask me...which no one did...;-)...I think she looked rather relieved that she didn't win 1st place. A few news media peeps made cracks about her grumpy face as she was waiting for the winner to be announced. Personally...I'll bet ya she was praying that they wouldn't name her.

The entire experience for her has been too stressful. I've read/heard mention several times about her being deprived of oxygen at birth due to some accidental circumstances at her birth. I think that she's been quite child like before the camera on occasion...the hip wiggling, etc... and I personally believe that she's probably mildly mentally challenged.

All tolled...she fulfilled her promise to her mother...and did so quite bravely IMO. She'll do some recording and then more than likely fade back to her original life style...hopefully...none the worse for wear...and media glare. She has a beautiful voice and I think that's what we all should remember.

    Anne

Susan was deprived of oxigen at birth and therefore has some minor brain damage and learning disabilities. As I know a couple of women with the same issues, the "bumps and grinds" as you put it are endearing to me. There is a social "ineptness" (too strong a word, but it gets the job done) with this type of disability, and yet they so want to be "normal". They aren't indication that she's not pure and simple. To me, they just indicate even more that she is. As part of it, she doesn't necessarily "get" that that's not a terribly proper body action.

Now if she weren't developmently disabled, I'd agree that there's something wrong with the behavior. But she is, as was said above, a simple woman.

The mere fact that a woman with her challenges had a dream and is blessed with such a voice, and opened our eyes to our preoccupation with looks, is a wonerful lesson, at least in my opinion.

And bostonpat, yes, of course cynic has a right to his opinions and to voice his opinions. We all have all kinds of "rights". That doesn't mean that we have to be mean or unkind as we exercise those rights.

    Suzieque

    My point exactly Suzieque!

Thanks for the interesting explanation, Suzieque. That does put another slant on it..

You're welcome, alisande (and, by the way, I'm not professing to be an expert on Susan Boyle - I've just read a few articles about her because her story touched me). Your open mind to another slant is very nice.

Bostonpat, I'm glad I helped make your point, although I suspect that we have different opinions about who was not exercising their rights kindly. Either way, just having the right to do or say something doesn't mean we don't have to be tasteful in how we do or say it. I know we agree on that, at least.

    Suzieque

    Suzieque,
I totally agree with what you've said and Anne I also agree that " I think she looked rather relieved that she didn't win 1st place " In the clips that I've seen it's almost as if she mouthed the word Diversity just before they announced the winner. No matter though as I'm sure we will be hearing more from Susan in the years to come. I'm wishing her future good luck with whatever is in store for her.
    Patti

Thanks Donna and Alisande. You explained it very well, Suzieque and that is how I see her as well. If you have watched other video of her she is always gesturing, like a muscleman and stuff and I find it kind of funny.

I think I'm kind of reacting to my childhood. I grew up with a kid who was mildly retarded and I was always the one defending him and keeping others from hurting him, physically and mentally. It still blows my mind how people can deliberately hurt someone who can't defend themselves. I kind of feel the same way about her. I read that she was bullied and called "Simple Susan" as a kid. I just want her to be safe and happy and to keep singing!!

What I was saying to cynic was not that he stated his opinion, but why did he even come to this thread in the first place? The question in not out of meanness but curiosity given my background in behavioral sciences. If there is something that I dislike my tendency is to avoid it rather than seek it out. Sort of like, why is he torturing himself?

I didn't realize she was mentally disabled. Now I feel really small. I'm sorry for the negative comments. I wish her the best.
    Donna

I think Susan Boyle is adorable.

I have a mentally retarded Aunt that is very much like Susan. Aunt Marie has the voice of an angel too but just the family get to enjoy her singing. She doesn't sing any where but home and church. Aunt Marie is 70 years old but mentally she is 12 years old. All the family is very protective of her and I'm sure Susan Boyle's family is.

I hope Susan has a record out because I will surely buy it. I love her voice and love the way she carries herself. I don't think I have ever seen such proper posture as she has in a long time! Susan is so perky, just adorable.

    Deb

I don't know why I love Susan Boyle so much but I do. I think she may be mentally challenged and simple but I just think she's wonderful. And I certainly am not alone. All the judges wanted her to win. She has incredible talent and I could listen to her for hours. I WILL buy anything she records. Thanks for the link to the show. She was even better the second time.

Cynic, there is a off button on the TV. Just push it and poof--all your problems are solved.
So I can't find out what's going on in the world? I see. I realize it upsets a lot of people but I simply don't think the sun rises and sets on this or any one person. Enough is enough was all I was saying. There's other things going on to fill the airwaves. And, holding back laughter, no I'm not "torturing" myself by coming to the forums, or reading the papers or watching TV. But even here, this is what, about the 5th thread at least devoted to her? I made a simple comment that I hope it's over. And not surprisingly when one disagrees with the premise, then all of a sudden you're "bashing", "low", "harsh" or told to leave, etc. But I'm not as thin-skinned as many, I can take the comments and disagreement. It doesn't torture me.

I note nobody has mentioned Ms. Boyle's breakdown yet. With the way she's been, I'm certainly not surprised. I suppose I'm to blame for her being in the, shall I say facility to not tread on toes? I'm sure I know some of the comments to be forthcoming.

If by "breakdown" you're referring to her outburst of anger, complete with dropping the F-bomb, there was indeed a thread on that subject here.

If you've read my recent comments, you'll know that I had my reservations about Susan Boyle (and I've since been enlightened about this). But if others think she's wonderful and want to discuss her and the whole competition or whatever, they should be able to do so freely. Isn't that what this forum is all about?

I'm sure there are topics that would cause any of us to roll our eyes and think enough is enough. But it crosses the rudeness line to actually step in and say so.

cynic, how about all of the Idol posts on this board? Do you participate in them? I don't know if you do, because I don't even open them as I don't watch the show and don't keep up with the contestants. So there's no reason for me to open the threads.

Of course, I think it's great that the show has such a following and people are so interested in the results and the contestants. That's great! Just not one of the things I participate in. Given your rationale, perhaps I should vent that I'm sick and tired of all the Idol posts because I'm not interested in them.

I don't subscribe to that logic.

Regarding the "breakdown", yes, she's in the hospital this morning. It's very sad, and you're likely to see a lot of posts about it. You don't have to read them.

For someone with her challenges and background, going from being the object of taunting by the village children to being their hero because of the show, and all of the attention she's endured, I'm not surprised that she's going to need some help in moving forward.

    Suzieque

It is crossing the rudeness line to say enough is enough? I have to disagree - it may be politcally correct to not say that, but come on - it's a discussion - how else can we learn and grow with different ideas and different opinions? Personally - I wish Susan all the best, but I myself am getting a bit tired of hearing the hype and "non stories" non stop, I also realise it will die down as soon as some other "news story" comes along.

But Pat, Suzieque's point is that you don't have to hear. You can scroll on by.

I think admonishing the group with "enough is enough" crosses the rudeness line because the speaker puts him/herself in the position of monitor, wiser and more knowledgeable than the others and determined to set them straight. I hate monitors..... :-)

I hate monitors as well! I didn't take Cynic's "enough is enough" as monitoring - just expressing an opinion. Telling someone that their opinion "is low" or "harsh" is monitoring, telling someone to scroll on by is a form of monitoring as well - it's the same as saying - "you're not going to agree with this and we don't want to hear it", which in your words - is putting the speaker "in the position of monitor, wiser and more knowledgeable than the others and determined to set them straight".

I guess like everything else, it's all in the individual's perception. I don't completely disagree with you.

We all need to have the courage to express our opinions. Everyone here loves Susan Boyle. I am not a fan of hers. If we all agree with each other all the time there won't be any discussions. As long as we don't make the thread a personal attack on the poster we should be able to state our opinion.
    donna

Sorry I missed your post, Bigbaby, but as I mentioned here, I can't watch videos on my old computer..can't even download youtube things. :(

FYI: out of curiousity, I went to justintv.com and see this site is for sale..no way to enter it now.
