I was very curious what you finally decided on. It's very funny as I had also thought you should not do white and then after your initial posts noticed many houses similar in architectural style to yours and they were all painted white! It looks like you are going for a slightly creamier white though than what you had before so it will still be a fresh new look and I love the FB light blue (which looks to have a bit og green in it also). It should go fabulously with your bluestone walkway.

Updating the thread

Painters have 1 coat on just about everything - I was away so they wanted my approval before 2nd coat -

The door was as I dreamed - a stunning Fir door w/no imperfections just layers of paint!
2nd coat needs doing, lots of little details - painting all the shutter hardware (just a new coat of black) - he will also do the sconces ?color - ?black

He will also do a glaxe on the door if we would like - to bring out even more detail

? should front porch decking/stairs be differing in color than door?

Also dh thinks we should stain the cedar shake 1st level roof - I'm not opposed to that just wasn't sure I wanted the maintenance every 2-3 yrs putting another coat of stain. If we do stain it would be close to what the patina would naturally be silvery grey Any thoughts?

Love, love, love the old fir door. Where did it come from as it's not what was there before. There was a poster over on kitchens (forgot who though), she did the rift&quartersawn kitchen with the plateracks and milk glass collection on top and I remember she refinished some old doors. Perhaps she could help you. Definitely some larger sconces. Try tin match the finish on the hardware. Black sounds lovely. And I agree with DH regarding staining the shake. As is, the brown color doesn't go with your shutters.

Wondering if you will be replacing the shingles on the upper roof with shakes at some point? There is a bit of a disconnect right now between the feel of the two roofs. If not, I would stain the shakes to feel closer to the color of the upper roof, I think.

Have you considered painting the underside of the porch roof in the same blue as the shutters? It might be a fun and unexpected touch.

Larger lights would be nice, I would probably go with black to match the hardware on the shutters.

Jetvtr, I absolutely love how you've opened up the front of the little roof over the front door. I'd bet that was the original design since it copies the shape of your transom window. I'd try and get the cedar roof closer in color to the shingle roof. Is your plan to change out the upper roof to cedar, too?

Question about your flat roofs - what is the roofing material on them? Rubber skins? Are yours painted a light color now to repel heat?

I love your house and love that you are using real wood!

the flat roofs need to be done before I can even think about the top :( - The painter is quite willing to stain that roof - so we'll see if we can't get it to blend better - Yes, we did consider painting that ceiling - the shutters are FB paint which only comes in oil - If painter can get it in latex maybe...Exisitng sconces will be painted black - perhaps someday I can go larger -

Patser - The little roof over front door didn't change - funny how new paint gives a whole new perspective on things - Flat roofs are old - modified black - I will put a gray elastomeric paint on them when painting is finished - but will replace the roofs within the next few yrs & have proper rail system installed

oh, ck this latest little flea mkt find (bench) - does it work? I was thinking of having it painted same as shutters & putting some plant pots on them

Am I missing something? YOur original door looks like it has glass panels. What wood are the sidelites made of? Too bad that is not fir also. I love Les' suggestion to paint the porch ceiling the the FB. What are your plans for the railing and steps? For your roof, I agree it would be best to be consistant. Would you consider the asphault shingles over the shake? Shake may be more authentic, but asphault shingles are more fire retardant

It is lovely. It seems so much more subdued and the front porch redo is amazing. It looks just so welcoming to come home to. I loveeeee the shutter and door!!! They are so cool! I love old houses. We really wanted one, but in our area the older homes like this, although are in excellent shape back up too close to an undesirable neighborhood. :( I reallyyyyy wanted an old house too!

les - bench is already on the other side - I asked painter to do it same as shutters & to get the F&B shutter paint in latex to do porch ceiling

Val - No glass panels on the orig door - just lots of paint last was red very glossy - not sure what sidelights are made of but they are getting painted - I suppose when the roof fails we will replace w/asphalt now will stain to try & tie the whole thing together

Lyfia yes F&B farrow & ball -thank you for the compliment - the task in choosing was a bit daunting

Summ - Thank you - that is exactly what I said to painter when we started out - needed a more subtle rendering - than the prior stark white w/bold red large shutters

Are you saying this door is the same as the one in the second pic at the top? Or is the white part a screen over the red door? I usually have a good eye for detail, but I'm missing this one. In any case, I love what you've done with the fir door. I think that is a good plan to stain the shakes for now and phase them out after they wear out (or you hit the lottery!) I'm really digging those operable shutters with the black S-clip thingies. They have so much character. Great decision to keep them. I want an old house now....

Almost done -
1st level roof stained a grey - much softer on the eye
Porch done - ceiling painted the FB lt blue (same as shutters) thanks les for encouraging me there

lots of little details were done - the owner of paint co. has incredible attn to minute detail - he took all the hardware sconces, door hardware, house #, and did a stain, metallic, laquer - all shutter hardware painted black

Few things left wires hanging, 2nd coat on porches - painting risers - garage etc

but she is looking good

This may help Val - w/the door ?'s that glass comes out & screen insert will go in - speaking of detail I think I should get a brass(?) screen in there
