I use tote bags - I have several that are kinda large, and if I fold it carefully, it fits ok. Most of the larger projects I just work on at home, though. Some people get pizza boxes (new ones) so their blocks lay flat.

When I took my second applique class (the first class didn't take) I saw that the instructor had a neat book-type album that she made that stored the applique blocks flat. I took two large pieces of foam core, covered them with some thin batting, then covered the batting with some free fabric from work - heavier than quilters' cotton. Then I cut some squares of felt and put them between the two covers - the felt serving as "pages" in between the covers.
Took some cording and a big needle, threaded everything together in two places on the left side. I added a loop on the back edge and a shank button on the front edge to keep it closed. Works great, keeps everything flat and all the little pieces together. I think the size was maybe 13" x 15" or so. I don't plan to make any blocks bigger than 12".

Sometimes I roll them on a cardboard tube, sticking a pin through to keep it wrapped. But it isn't my favorite way.
Since I use foamcore a lot, I use that to keep the block(s) flat, stick a pin or two (sort of sideways) to keep the block in place. A second foamcore board the same size can be sandwiched on top, and all kept together with a big binder clip. Also clipped inside the boards is my paper pattern and ziploc baggie with pieces. If I want to carry a baggie of thread, scissors, etc. the clip can also hold that outside the boards. Then I carry the board "sandwich" around in a large tote with handles.

I bought a pre-made carrying case that is 15" square with a shoulder strap. It was made for hand sewing. It has some pockets inside for notions. I used it when traveling by plane, but when it's just around town, I use a tote bag. Since all I put in there is my hand sewing, it doesn't get wrinkled. I also press my background fabric with spray sizing and maybe that helps with the not wrinkling.

I bought my sewing case at Hancock Fabrics, which has now closed all of their stores in my area of Michigan. I am sure it is/was sold elsewhere, but I have never seen one anywhere else. Nor have I looked.

This won't help with your pieces BUT... to carry notions, thread, scizzors, needles, thread, seam ripper, thimble, pins, etc I use a small zippered cosmetic case, (a pencil case would do too). I use this for any handwork that I carry with on roadtrips.

Anyway I used a block box - see link. It gave me a firm surface on my lap to spread my work on. I had a small bag with a ball-chain (like key chain) attached to the handle. I used it for my tessellated lily blocks.

Here is my homemade applique album. Please pay no notice to the UFO applique blocks....ahem....

The album is 19" tall by 15" wide. It is covered with upholstery fabric. The flowers on the front were ironed on then stitched down.
