Hand Applique: Lesson Three (Part Two)

âÂÂThe POINTâÂÂ

The point of the heart requires some special attention, but it is not difficult to do. Stop several stitches short of the point. And fold the fabric in a straight line at the bottom.

Now push the side you are working on under and crease with your thumb nail.

Now stitch up to the point, pushing your fabric back under the appliqué with your needle tip if it falls out. Alternately, you can kind of hold it while you get up to the point of the heart. Take a slightly deeper stitch in the point. (If anyone bothers me while I am doing an appliqué point, I tell them to wait!)

Now push the other side of the seam allowance under your appliqué. You may need to clip the seam here to make sure you get a nice crisp point. I like to lift up the freezer paper here to âÂÂpeekâ at what I am doing.

Continue to appliqué to your starting stitches. Pull your thread to the back. Tie a knot in the fabric background inside your appliqué. One way to tie this knot is to bring the point of your needle through a little bit of fabric then make a couple of loops of thread. Next pull your needle through the loops.

5. Cutting the Background Out-If your focus fabric is light and your background fabric is dark, you may need to clip out your background. Make sure to leave a generous seam allowance on here. I leave ü to ý an inch.

6. Finishing the Block- Time to press and square up our blocks! Trim to 6.5 x 6.5 inches. Try pressing your appliqué from the back first.

Here is my finished block, but it still needs pressing and squaring up.

Here are some links on how to do the appliqué stitch (in case I havenâÂÂt fully explained it):
