Sisters trip has been canceled

She just called me and won't be able to make the trip.

She has had a bad tooth for a couple of days now, and woke up this morning to an infection.

She does not need to be traveling with an infection with an already compromised immune system.

I am feeling really deflated right about now. Crushed is a better word. I will be having the biggest pity party this town has seen in a long time tonite.

But since this this trip was not about me, I just need to pull up my boot straps and hope that she is feeling better soon and we can do this sometime later.

Just thought I would let everyone know. Thank you to all for sharing my excitement, it just not meant to be this time I guess.

Bummer. Hope she is feeling better soon and that the trip can be rescheduled soon.

Well....the star in a Gifted Man made $100,000 per episode. Then the episode itself probably cost anywhere from $500,000 to $1,000,000 EACH. That's a lot of money for a studio to put out if viewers aren't watching and advertisers aren't paying to advertise on it. Unfortunately, it is about the bottom line. And many studios prefer to pull the plug early, rather than continue to pour money down a rat hole and hope for the best. They can't recover those kind of losses if they decide to keep a full 22 episode season at $22-30 million total for no return. Then consider they may have 5 new shows on this season that are underperforming - that's a potential $100 million plus loss in a single year. If it was your money, you'd probably do the same. The economics of TV today are staggering. There are always people who complain about cancellations, but truthfully - would anyone cancel a profitable success? Sometimes there's a ground swell to bring back a show - Southland was a good example, but you can bet that cable picked it up at a guaranteed reduced budget and reduced numbers of episodes, and that cable fees are helping to subsidize it - something networks don't get.

You are absolutely right Anne. After 20yrs too. That's a remarkable run of such an aggressive cancer but still.... it does suck! As Heather says, she recovered quickly although I think it was day 2 post op that she went shopping! Marjorie sounds equally stoic and probably should be Heather's twin instead of me. I'm just not built with the same stuff as she is. I'd be the one asking for the morphine. I saw Heather go through chemo, surgery and then radiation virtually without complaint. She set the bar very high should I follow in her footsteps. I went with Heather for her pre-op anaesthetic visit. The anaethetist said "Don't worry - it's simple surgery! I wanted to scream at him - Simple..... for who! Compared to what your sister has gone through it may well be but when I worked with oncology children, it was often the simple stuff that seemed to them to be the last straw! They'd tolerate bone marrows/spinal taps but lose it when having blood drawn. If you don't have one - a fanny pack will make it a lot easier to have to hold the JP drains. Much easier than coiling the tubing and pinning it to your clothes. I will be thinking of your sister in the coming days. I totally understand your need not to be an active caregiver without a break. Please don't feel selfish. A worn-out caregiver whether it be physically or emotionally is just not an effective one. You are very wise to realize that ahead of time.

Our family found a different solution. Our children live in the PacNW; usually we go up there to visit them. But a few years ago we had our get-together here. We have a very small home, two bedrooms and baths; the only other place to sleep would be on an air mattress in the living room. Not doing that at my age. So we had the house cleaned spic and span, all polished up, and stocked the fridge (all of them are excellent cooks) and I also made welcome baskets with goodies for each son and wife and our DGS. Assigned the front bedroom to DS1 and DIL and the master suite to DS2 and DIL and DGS, with its adjacent laundry room. For ourselves, DH and I took a comfortable room in a nearby motel, thereby putting the sons and families together in comfort, but no one squashed anywhere. We would come to the house between 9 and 10 a.m.i, and have an all day visit, going here and there, then dinner either at home or out together. Then around 6 - 7 p.m. DH and I returned to the motel for a long relaxed evening of unwinding and having some quiet. It was wonderful! We all agreed that it was one of the best family visits ever! We did this for 5 days and no one got tired of anyone else and there wasn't a single harsh word...We hope to do it again this year. I would allow my sister (if I were lucky enough to have a sister) and niece to be comfortable with their sleeping plans, and would not fret about being together 24/7.

I think this will be the first Easter we haven't spent with our kids ever. I love when we all go to Mass together on Easter morning. Our son is 38 today. Our daughter turned 33 last Friday. Our precious angel granddaughter will be 1 on April 25. I don't think we will be together for any of it. It makes me so sad to be apart from them but it's what we have to do right now. I am very grateful for skype and video calls. We skyped this morning with our son and our daughter and grandbaby. Chase blows kisses, says dada and mama and has a heart melting laugh and smile. I'll be watching mass on tv Easter morning and will thank God for the many blessings in my life. Happy Easter everyone, whatever meaning it has for you and however you celebrate it.

Oh Trin...I am SO sorry! (((((Trinity))))) I know she's probably as disappointed as you are! Now, what you gotta do is start making NEW plans! When she's feeling better, get on the phone and decide when would be a good time for her! The visit WILL happen...you just have a little longer to look forward to it!*S*

That's the pits, Trin. I know how much you were looking forward to seeing your sister. Is there any way you can go to her? Like CB said, she's probably just as disappointed as you are. I hope she gets to feeling better real soon so you two can get together.

Awwwww, Trin... I'm so sorry! I know you had your heart set on this. All things happen for a reason - my guess is that this gives you time to plan even BIGGER and BETTER surprises for her!

I'm sorry, you were really looking forward to seeing your sister and I bet she was looking forward to coming too. It's best that she get that tooth under control so you both can have more fun while she is visiting.

I have been off work since Wednesday to take my two cats to the vet to be boarded while she was here. I have cleaned my house like a crazed women to relieve the house of cat dander since sis is highly allegic. So, my vacation after tomorrow for the year will be more than half spent.. I did call about a ticket to see if I could show up on her doorstep unannounced, but it was well over $1,000.00.
I have to believe, as selfish as I would like to be, that maybe she should not have been here this time. Although the Texas weather is cool and calm, I just guess another time will be better. I am feeling better now, I was almost dumbstruck that she would not be coming, but it is what it is and I have to get over it. Damn the bad luck.

I'm so sorry to hear that your sister's visit had to be canceled. I know how anxious I was to go visit my sister after my treatments. I just wanted to get away, and I bet your sister felt the same way. They do give you lots of warnings when your immune system is compromised. Maybe after she's over the infection she can come visit.

I don't see why she had to cancel entirely...surely she can come down to see you when the tooth infection is handled.
