Gone a week. Made a quilt. (pic)

So I was on vacation last week and spent it alone at my cottage, cleaning, sewing and generally reflecting on life and stuff. It was wonderful. I used to tell my mother when I was little, that I wanted to grow up to be a hermit and I think maybe there may be some deep roots for that. Anyway, here is the quilt I made for my BFF's daughter who has just been admitted to an eating disorder program. I experimented with some fancy stitches on my machine and used 2 of my favorite techniques. Rag quilt and the good old 9 to 4. I'm hoping to be allowed to visit her tonight but I'm not sure. She has a lot of restictions.

Nice job! I'm sure it will bring her comfort every time she touches it.

My husband travels quite a bit and even though I miss him, I value and enjoy my time in the house by myself. I can relate to your hermit tendencies!

Thanks, holiday-ers, for your gracious comments....Fiddle-dee-dee! (as Scarlett would say!) OA..yes, that is an original of First Day Issue (usually in plastic in notebook on GWTW baker's rack...after my Dad died & Mom had given me the plates, I got really interested in GWTW memorablia...& I bid on a few things on e-bay...my fav things I bid on were B&W 8x10 prints..I have 6 altog but 1 of them is vintage...copyright 1954, R54/204...I love old B&W prints! OA...the stemware...glassware is very old ... gifted to me by my Mom yrs ago who saved it for me in cedar chest until I had a home of my own...so I think maybe produced late 1940's or early 50's).. I've broken some & tried to replace: Got excited cause thought I had found the same thing one day on lunch hour from work & went back & bought after work...had Star of David on base...but diff stems...think they are old, too, but don't know cause I don't know ID of either one...I'll attach link below to Oct 10 Guardian Angel t'scape that shows pics. Frou...Carol Burnett reference, too funny! Must see that again! The gold flatware is a set of 12 ...& it's my friend's GS find...& she dug it out cause said it would be perfect for GWTW t'scape! I thought so, too! Like, OA, I would love to find a few pcs! Here's a fork & spoon serving pc I have in the Lariat bowl on buffet: Dollbaby certainly was pea green with envy as you said earlier about candy's GD's high chair! Here's a better pic of the plates on shelf above buffet: Thanks, punk, nana, jane...Dollbaby is such a pleasure! And I don't even really like dolls that much (ohhh, should have said that in a whisper! And thanks for your sweet comments...I had too much fun! I did dig out the dolls that Mom gave me from her collections but I didn't like the look I was creating on the buffet...it was not, "me." The largest Bonnie Blue I bought myself...Dollbaby wanted her on the tray but I said, "No!" LOL! ...and, kathleen, for your comment on diff post...hope you will be back to par soon! I did a little quilting between Christmas & New Years, but contracted strep somehow over the weekend. Woke up at 3am Sun w/it. Went to church (thought at that time it was just a sore throat, never had strep before:( ) & came home & prepared sit-down dinner for 20. Our final Christmas celebrating w/my sister & her brood/spouses. When they left I took a nap & thought the worst was over. No such luck. Dr appt in afternoon confirmed my suspicions. Hopefully all the kisses the DGSs gave me didn't give them strep too. What WAS I thinking? Actually, w/20 in the house, I wasn't thinking much at all! lol Once I get all the decorations put away, I need to find out where I'm at w/all the round robins, swaps & such. I'd love to lock myself in the sewing room for a week & only come out for food & potty breaks! Just think of all I could get done! Wow!! Back to reality, I need to continue the un-decorating process. :( :( I work at it an hour, then need to rest - feel like I've been hit w/a truck! What a way to start a new year!:(

Marty- I pieced the stack of blocks to the fabric that makes up the floor/carpet on the quilt. I also pieced them to the "moulding" in the center of the quilt. However, I was not able to cut the wallpaper background fabric to fit the block stack in such a way that it wouldn't pucker up in every direction. So I did applique the blocks to the wallpaper background. I just did a satin/zig zag stitch with like-colored thread around the edges of those blocks. I know it's hard to see in the pictures. -Stella

Thanks all. bluekit - Yes, two different hardware finishes - ORB on the painted cabinets. Weathered nickle on the cherry cabinets suzatwork - thanks. Yes we have 9 foot ceilings but decided against 42 and 48" taking the 48" to the ceiling. We just felt that was too high for the look we wanted and the top shelves would be very hard to use without a step stool or small ladder. As it is, we moved from 30" high in our old kitchen to 36 and 42 in the new one and ended up with tons more storage. And the top shelves in the 36 even somewhat high. When I get a chance I will try and post more pics of the sink base. Yes, it is bumped out. No feet or arch at the bottowm (we wanted to keep the toekick area of the sink clear so we wouldn't hit our feet while working at the sink) but we do have decorative fluted panels where it is bumped out igloochic - thanks. the tile is not really expensive. it is Daltile Terra Antica Oro - cost between $3.50 and $4.00 a sq ft for the tile itself. labor to install was more than the material Buehl - thanks. Alas no granite til 5/28 so no new pics to show. Our granite company is a few hours away in the center of the state and they have a great reputation but serve a wide area so they are quite busy

You're the bestest friend ever!! What a nice job!

There're lots of times I wish I was at your cottage by myself....but with 2 youngsters, 1 baby, 2 dogs, 1 rabbit, pond fish & 1 DH to take care of it's not going to happen any time soon!! LOL

That is such a thoughtful idea. I'm sure that will mean a lot to the daughter and your BFF. The quilt is very nice, it just has the look of comfort in it.

That's so lovely. I've never seen that pattern done as a rag quilt. Nice job! I'm sure she'll get comfort out of snuggling up in it.

That is really nice Wendy. I love the color combination. Is it flannel or regular quilter's cotton? Glad you enjoyed your time alone.

I am no longer surprised that quilting lets us do loving things for others and still get so much pleasure out of the process as well. Ahhh did I read "vacation" and "cleaning" in the same sentence?

I never understood how an eating disorder could control your life until my sis's friend was diagnosed with the illness. Blesses for you and yours.

I am not sure about being a hermit but it sure would be nice to have a little time along. Since my DH retired I have little opportunity to be "ME" as I am sure others can equate to. TFS Jayne

The quilt is so sweet, and probably just the thing she'll appreciate as she undergoes therapy. Oh, how I daydream sometimes of just having the house to myself - being a hermit wouldn't be all bad, I don't think. My husband retired a year ago - need I say more? (BTW, my DD has an eating disorder).

Faye, What a great way to play with fancy stitches and still be able to bless someone with a quilt. I'll have to remember doing a larger 9-4 with this purpose in mind.

It's nice you have a place to go where you can 'hermitize' and be away from the hustle and bustle of life....

That is a beautiful quilt that definitely has a calm and comforting feel to it! I too would not mind being a hermit sometimes, sounds like a lovely week.
