Pella, IA Tulip Festival ~pics~

Kalie left with her camera for Pella, IA this morning before 5am! This is their Tulip Festival. She wasn't able to be there too long, but long enough to get a bunch of pics. I thought I would share a few with you.

Had to respond to this. My bulbs just arrived from Holland today-earlier than usual. Being married to a Dutch DH, of course we grow bulbs: mostly tulips-lily, fringed, Rembrandt, Darwin, doubles, the new giant, etc. I think my favorite is the plain ol' Darwin. We plant 300+ fancy and Darwins in the "Welcome Garden" every year in clumps of 10. They come in packs of 10 directly fron Holland. Every year, we order them at the Tulip Festival in Orange City, IA. Yes, the fancy ones, in fact most tulips are annuals now. I would like to find some of the old fashioned perennials, I suppose they may be species tulips. Has anyone found good species or pernnial bulbs anyplace? We grew 'King Alfred' daffys, but quit planting them, cuz we always miss their bloom, since we snowbird. We had a lot of clumps, but I don't even know if they still bloom. I lined the front beds with grape hyacinths (Muscari). I had to replace a bunch every year and finally decided they just don't do well enough here. My border always had holes in it, so I just let them die out. Alliums are a different story and if I get the right cultivar they are wonderful and winter hardy.I love doing paperwhites & amaryllis in the winter and seeing the little scilla early in the spring. I enjoy the neighbor's crocus, but have no success with it here. gramma jan

No guesses on the party question from me. I have a bad case of CRS and it doesn't seem to get better. Now my buddy, Plantlady Jan has a good "rememberer". She remembered that I'll be away over Easter and she sent Easter/April presents early. What a nice surprise. There is a wooden Happy Easter sign for on my door. Guess it is time to take down the one that says "Fat Snowmen Last Longer". This year they are lasting too long even for me to appreciate. The new sign has a cute bunny holding a carrot on a string. A note pad holder with a brown bunny and beautiful spring flowers was the next thing I pulled out. Cute as can be and it has place for a picture on top. For now I'll enjoy the message that says Love Grows in a Garden. So true. Then came a nicely framed print of a snowman and a cat standing in a snowstorm. Really cute and it says Let it Snow. About 90% of the time I say that too. It is really nice and will be one of my treasures in my new house. Very "country" and will be perfect there. Jan sent me a welcome stone for my garden too. It has Daffodils(SP??) bees and dragonflies. It will start off standing beside my new front door. Later I'll find a special place in the garden for this. A chocolate bunny and an "energy therapy" cleansing bar for body and soul.Hummm maybe both together will give me enough energy to get me moving again. OK Jan,picture me singing in the shower while nibbling the ears off the chocolate bunny and lathering up with the energy bar. Well, maybe don't picture it but you get the idea. I need all the energy I can get these days. I'll let you know how it works. A nice soft pair of gloves will still be useful. It was -11 degrees when I came out of work this morning. I lost my favorite pair St PAtty's day/night. It's always good to have spare gloves in this climate The candle with the bunny on it is just precious. Bunny is sitting up to get a good look at all the flowers and butterflys around him on the holder. The design is pale springish colors of lavender, sage, lt yellow, and blue. So fresh and pretty, I can't describe it very well, but, I love it. Thanks again Jan. I hope the bunny finds your house too.

Well, I'll chime in, I guess. I'm Jennifer in Va...as my name states. I've resorted to lurking for a bit. There's a lot going on that keeps me busy. I'm 7 months pregnant now, and still busy schooling my 2 kids! I only get in my sewing room about once a week, rather than the once a day it used to be....just too tired to do more! Mostly I've been piddling. Collecting batik charms for a class at our guild's quilt-in in March, collecting red-white-green fqs for the Mystery quilt. I did make up a purse out of yellow/blue charms for donation to the raffles. My most active project is probably my English Paper Piecing one out of 30s prints that will be a baby quilt (Thanks Teresa!) I have the bulk of the blocks done and will start putting those together soon... byrdseay~Maybe we'll run into each other next weekend at Mid-Atlantic! I'll be there Friday & Saturday, trying to get into classes both days. (Guess I'll have to get organized for that as well!) Oh, and yesterday DH said I could get an embroidery machine for my 40th b-day tomorrow!! Now I just need to figure out if we can afford one!!..and which one! Oy vay

"Pella, Iowa" ... brings back memories.

Over 30 years ago I worked at a window company that was the Canadian distributor for high-quality Pella windows, which used to arrive from Pella by multiple truckloads.

My ex- grew up in Des Moines, attended Iowa State in Ames ...

... then transferred to Cornell in Ithaca, N.Y. - where she met me.

Good wishes to all of you for a lovely spring.

good36,

How far are you from Holland?

Son has gone down to entertain a couple of times at the Tulip Festival at Holland, though I doubt that he will, this year.

It was on one trip that I broke the ignition key in the fuel tank door in Port Huron. It was quite a job, getting that situation straightened out ... and it took over an hour for the lock and key technician here in London to get the business end of the key out of the ignition, where I'd inserted it after successfully removing it from the lock that I'd disassembled from the fuel door.

Suggestion: When travelling some distance from home (or even near?) ...

... carry a spare key?

Sometimes son carried one, but not that day!

My mom and some of her friends just got back from a bus trip to see the tulips and enjoy the tulip festival. They had a really fun time. The funny thing is that her friends are 10 years older and love taking bus trips and my mom has started to to along with them and has enjoyed a lot of the trips.

The Queen of the Netherlands was a refugee in Ottawa during World War II ...

... and the appreciative Dutch have sent large numbers of tulip bulbs to Ottawa in the years since that time.

They have a festival every year, as well.

I'm not sure of the time.
