Red brick, colonial slate roof, cream trim--other possibilities?

We are having our trim painted on our humble home. If we want to change the color, now is the time. We are leaning towards keeping the current color given a lack of anything else that really inspires. Our deck will remain the cocoa color. only other color I've seen that I like is an olive color. The front door and shutters (vinyl) will remain black most likely.

I drove around the neighborhood to look at other homes, and I am totally uninspired. I don't like plain white. The little shrubs growing from a tree root in the front have been removed. It's an older photo but the exterior looks the same other than the deck has been painted.

Benjamin Moore Mountain Moss is a beautiful color and would look great with the brick and the black.

That's an interesting color. It looks like a grey-green when I do some Google images searches.

Re: no shutters. Their windows are much bigger than yours, so the trim around the windows in conjunction with how large their windows are allow them to have no shutters and not have the facade of the house look like something is missing, windows are too small, etc. They also have the roof of the porch going across the entire length of the house, which also makes a difference. I think your house will look very different w/o shutters, more bare. Try it, though. Can't hurt, and as noted, you can always add shutters. I do think that, since your windows are small, you'll need the shutters. The portico on your house is so nice. I think it was clever to take the railing out and that it looks better w/o it. I think the portico gives your house "gravitas". Porches are nice looking from the outside, but they prevent light from getting into those rooms in the front of the house, which is a real negative. Best way to decide is to see the real thing in person. A website will not get you close to the right color. I was also thinking of colonial slate but when I asked the roofing contractor to name some addresses with that shingle, he had none although he had done hundreds of Certainteed roofs. Weathered wood is nice if you like brown tones. My house demanded a gray tone, so I went with Landmark premium high def pewterwood. This shingle is nice also without the high def. It was installed on my house which is white a few weeks ago and it looks great. It is not too dark and not too light. The contractor also had done many of this color so others found it to be attractive so that's why it is popular. One more observation. I wanted a muted color. Pewterwood is muted. With some asphalt shingles, the pattern and color are so prominent and busy that you see the roof before you notice the house. I didn't want that. The roof should compliment the house without being the main focal point. At least that's my two cents.

I liked Celerygirl’s first and last color schemes from her Wednesday post. I wouldn’t remove the shutters since they are totally architecturally appropriate to these windows and this type home. I would most likely also add them to the second floor windows since that is the way this style house would have traditionally looked. I like the bed line Yardvaark sketched out which looks great with the classic architecture and doesn’t hide it. I wouldn’t put anything much above window sill height across the front of the house.

Thank you for the suggestions! I like the idea of removing the shutters to see what colors would match more appropriately. The roof has supposedly 30 years left on in but it is almost a black color. The siding is also newer. The trim is actually very dark brown at the moment. So we have black roof, off white siding, maroon shutters, orangey red door, and brown trim! I will have to play around with photoshop to try out a sage green - hadn’t thought of that color. Thanks! We’ll probably replace the door and sidelights soonwr than later. So many options though! How to choose?? We would probably have to replace the walkway at some point bc it is tilting the wrong way towards the house and the downspout does not extend beneath it. We have some temporary plastic extender tripping hazard at the moment. How much do walkways normally cost? We had some instant equity when buying (it was sold as-is at half the price of the average price of the neighborhood) but we’re looking to redo some bathrooms, do something about the kitchen eventually, fill in some voids beneath sections of the house, and install 100 ft of retaining wall too so this may have to wait. I love the idea of installing some curvy landscaping though but maybe we should wait until we replace the walkway at some point? I guess we could always just score a curvy border around it and plant some cheaper plants in the meantime. We also have a retaining wall at the side that is rotting (where there used to be a bunch of trees - they must have chopped them down prior to selling bc they are still there in these photos) and need to replace ASAP. There is one tree remaining on the “overgrown” tree side of the house that is a dogwood tree so I might see what it looks like in the spring before chopping some of it off. My husband wants to put in retaining wall at the back as well in order to bury an exposed pipe, provide a base for the AC unit, and address drainage issues. So it would be about 100 ft of retaining wall, along with regrading and pulling out leftover tree stumps. It’s likely a big expense unless anyone has any other ideas. The porch is actually sagging in the middle but are considering a polyeurethane injection to prop it back up as this seems to be much more cost effective than putting in a new one. My husband keeps going on about changing the porch floor - but what else goes with brick? The posts are gone though - they definitely need to be replaced ASAP. Any suggestions for what style and width? There are so many options!

I think it's a great exterior color.

Nor sure though, how it would look against your deck boards.

BM Nantucket gray is a great color for the exterior. Looks brighter outside than the paint chip might suggest.

I really like your cream trim. A darker trim seems too heavy for your house. The only thing I might do is to remove the shutters from the picture window and increase the size of the shutters on the smaller windows to the left to be of a size to close over the window (larger). You might want to paint your peaks to match the roof color, but sorry my photoshop skills are lacking. I wish someone would jump in. You already pulled the cream and black from your brick colors. I think I would stay with it except to paint the front door a brick red or paint the door trim black to make the door look more prominent.

I love olive, it looks good year round, whether trees are in bloom, autumn color, or against snow. That said, my only concern would be that you don't go too dark. .
Tribbix' Mountain Moss does seem nice.

I have used Bennington Gray, which is sometimes cream and sometimes slightly olive greenish, depending on the light.

You might want to look at Providence Olive, too.

My two picks look far less green, in isolation, than does the Moss, but I think that when you put them next to the brick the green comes forward. Both of them change a lot throughout the day.

We used SW fireweed for the clapboards, SW ripe olive for door and shutters, and BM compatible cream for the windows and other trim. So you know I love your color scheme.

Black is perfect for your front door and shutters, and I really like the cream trim with your brick and siding; white would be too stark. I'd stick with the current colors. Your house is so pretty and inviting. With those beautiful majestic trees, there's nothing humble about it!

Well, I have not been very successful with DH and greens. He is generally not afraid of color, so I will not bug him about it. Looks like we will keep the cream. I am fine with the cream. Our contractor pressure washed yesterday, and it looks better already, LOL.

Just one thought: you might consider painting just along the roof line a darker color, even the black. Sometimes with light trim (cream) and a light roof(gray) a contrasting color can give the house more distinction.

We have the same color roof, same color trim, with a sage green body. We used a darker trim color on just the edge of the roof line and it made the roof look much better.

So, you did the "peak" area of the roof? Did you do any other areas? For example, under the roof that faces the side of the house?
