For those of you who really want to see them here is a link to my photobucket page where you can view almost 160 photographs. I am having trouble with my USB cord and cannot post pictures of the fabric right now, but I'm working on it.

Among special interest are the designs on the courtyard floor, yours truly on an elephant, and the last picture. It's me after having taken an Ambien (sleeping pill) and then being told to get off the plane in Vancouver. I don't even remember being there.

It is believed that, with the notable exception of cherries, the stone fruit species originated in an area that is in modern-day southern China. But apricots have been bred for thousands of years in Persia and Armenia. Before all that breeding, the original Asian apricot was very sour. In fact, they still have it in Asia, and use it to make alcohol and for pickle them as a condiment (in Japan it is called mume). Cherries originated around the area in the North, above the Black Sea extending to the Caspian Sea. Crabapples have long been native to Europe, but the modern apple resulted from crossing the crabapple with a bigger apple species from the Tien Shan mountains in the far Western part of China. There are still crabapple varieties in Europe that are good for eating. All the citrus came from Southeastern China, or in the case of Pomelo, from Malaysia (and surrounding parts of Southeast Asia). The Orange is believed to have been originally developed in China from repeated breeding of Pomelo together with Mandarin. Wild strawberries have long been native to the Northernmost part of Europe, and the Alps, but are very small. The modern day strawberry came about by crossing a bigger strawberry species native to Peru with the smaller European wild strawberry. Pineapples are native to Central America, when the Spanish explorers first came to Panama they saw pineapples growing wild. Grapes are thought to have either come from the Caucasus region (there are some lush green pockets of forest and subtropical jungle there) or from Afghanistan. Wild grapes grow wild across the region, but these are not very suitable for eating, so it is unclear where they were originally bred. Grapes were already being grown in Armenia in very ancient times. But in ancient times they did not have seedless grapes, so grapes were almost always made into wine (often with a lower alcohol content than today's wine).

loves2cook, I'm far from self sufficient as far as food goes. I still buy cheese, butter, milk, but I get them from a locally owned hormone and antibiotic free certified dairy. I do buy some imported produce, although I try to buy what's closest in terms of having it shipped because the quality is so much better. I made some mango/lime sorbet for Easter dessert and neither of those things are grown anywhere near here, although I did use Pioneer sugar from here in Michigan. I refuse to buy store tomatoes anymore since reading the latest article in Gourmet (or was it Bon Appetit?) about the slave labor used in the tomato industry. However, if I only bought what was grown locally I'd never have a salad from September to May unless I build myself a greenhouse. Hmmmm.......anyway, I digress. I don't grow dried beans or lentils, they are too labor intensive for the crop I get. I haven't yet grown my own grains for grinding into flour and nearly all my mustard comes from Canada (thanks, Chase!). However, I dn't expect the government to keep me safe and I don't believe in better living through chemicals. I do what it's possible for me to do, take a little extra time and effort, and I have a lot more control over what I'm eating and what I'm feeding to my grandkids. Lou, don't worry about having the thread pulled, I don't think anyone minds at all. That's why we all jumped in on this. As for China, if I pick anything up on the shelf, from a bowl to a bottle of honey, and look at the label and it's from China, I put it back. I'd say KAL is writing for an entirely different audience than Myhrvold. The majority of foodies, even in the SF Bay Area, could care less if they personally ever sous vided anything but do turn to Yelp and Chowhound on a regular basis. Yes, indeed, you too can scalp your reservation to State Bird Provisions or Rich Table - in fact, there's an app for that! We spend thousands of dollars dining out every year and maybe $600 of that annual amt ever goes to Modernist dishes. KAL is a blogger. I can say honestly that compared to his Bay Area peers he knows immensely more about food than most Millennials. I've met a number of the local bloggers and although they're delightful people, most of 'em couldn't describe the difference between a kumquat and a Hungarian sweet pepper. They've never even looked inside a Julia Childs' cookbook, and have absolutely no idea where sweetbreads come from or even what they are. This is one of the reasons I keep my own review blogsite private, by invitation only. I go into very detailed descriptions and even the history of a dish or cuisine, and they're very long reads. My reviews are also on occasion extremely unflattering to a lot of restaurateurs and chefs [smile], so I'd rather err on the side of discretion. As a blogger, Kenji is one of the better ones. I agree his photos may not be great - certainly not compared to yours, dcarch - but they're a whole lot clearer than 98% of the photos people post on Yelp (which drives me crazy; nobody needs to see 16 photos of the same d****d dish!). And I have to agree with pillog: I've never liked America's Test Kitchen recipes. They talk a good game, but I have never liked the results I've gotten...oh, except for once. The Chocolate Bourbon Cake is terrific! But don't make it with really great bourbon; even 2 Tblsp can be overpowering (better to drink the Pappy, than bake with it, I learned).

What wonderful pictures! I looked at every one and enjoyed them so much! The photos of the Chinese village and villagers looks very much like the ones my sister took when she went to China two years ago. I loved the pictographs - those would make a great quilt! Also the stone courtyard design would look fabulous in a quilt.

I'd love to know more about the Stone Forest. Is that all natural stone or was it carved or placed there?

You bought fabric??? Oh, yes! Pics please!

Fran, I looked at all the photos, wonderful, there are several "quilts" in the photos, the stone flooring was wonderful, elephants too, what a great memory you have. I have one question, please excuse my curious asking, why did you take an ambien when traveling, Rene

Rene, I took ambien on the plane because we were in the air for 21 hours and I can't sleep on planes. The ambien knocked me out so I had some rest at least. Normally I have no trouble sleeping.
\Someone else asked about the stone forest. It is nature's own work, limestone eroded by wind and water over centuries.

Wonderful pictures! I loved the pictures of the river gorge, the homes, and other scenery--especially inside that Tibetan home.

Thank you so much for sharing your pictures, my friend. I looked at every one, but am going back and look some more. Looks like you had a great vacation.

The old bridge in Tibet looks scary!LOL Reminds me of an old "swinging" bridge that was the walkway over a small river where we lived in my early childhood. That was one scary bridge.

DH went to Hong Kong for R & R when he was in the Navy, back in the early 70s. Some of your pictures made me think of the pictures he took when there.

Was the elephant ride scary?LOL It looked like a lot of fun.

Thanks again for sharing your trip with us. I'm going back to your album now and study the pictures more.

I have been waiting for you to post pictures - they were worth the wait. It looked like a wonderful trip.
The stone forest looked very interesting. I think the elephant ride and the raft ride must have taken a bit of courage!

I went through all your pictures and thought to myself "I guess I now know why Dad never takes any pictures when he goes overseas." Problem is there's TOO MUCH to take pictures of!

Liked all of the pictures. I especially loved the mosaic stonework. Laying it out would be bad enough, but to find natural stones that are so uniform to boot. Wow!
