I had a few opportunities on night shots using high ISO, no tripod, it was challenging, especially when you have moving subject.

This was on a outdoor musical show, world's largest natural theater in Yangshou, played in the water, [Li River] with 600 performers, these are farmers during the day, they were trained for a year.

Light was pretty poor...so the shots

I live in a rural area near the Ellisville Harbor State Park, and a road runs right by the salt marsh. At low tide the mudbanks butt up to the road and a few years ago I took this photo. At the time I knew almost nothing about ducks, and noticed the strange looking mallards in the mud. My philosophy is always shoot first and ask questions later, so I shot and went home to check the references. I didn't even know Green-winged Teal existed. At that distance my Canon Powershot S5IS with a 12X zoom can handle it, although I don't get that nice feather detail. Some day I'll get better equipment, but not right now. Claire

The Canons that I'm familar with have two focusing modes: continous and only at exposure time. In the continous mode, the focus mechansiam is active all the time and is using up battery charge. It is constantly trying to keep the scene in focus as y u move the camera around. Many users turn this off to conserve power. In the other mode, the autofocus become active only when the shutter button is pressed half way down to its first detent. In this mode, the shooter must allow enough time for the camera to focus before pressing the shutter all teh way down to record the shot. In good light, those Canons do focus fairly fast, usually in the time it take the user to compose the scene. But focusing takes more time for low light and at long zooms. The farther the zoom, the longer it may take. I think that on onme of your deer shots, the camera was not fullt focused when the shot was recorded. In another matter, I have been able to hand hold shots up to 2 and maybe 3 times zoom in good light where the shutter speed is fast. Once you approach 5X zoom and beyond, you'll need someting to steady the camera or very fast shutter speed. Your shots of the deer appear to be at least 5X zoom.

I think you would really enjoy the design work/ideas that the designer, Charles Faudree does. Below is a link to his website. You can go to the library to check out the books. Thanks Carol and Sultry!! As you can tell...I love photography :) I did a lot of sports photography over the last 40 years so I'm sure that helps with catching birds in flight. I shot these handheld with my Canon 7D and my Canon 70-200 2.8 lens (which equates to 112-320mm due to the 1.6 magnification factor on canon digital SLRs). Normally, if I knew ahead of time that we were going to go birding after visiting Tom, I would have packed my 300 2.8 (480mm equivalent) and a monopod. But, since I was only planning on shooting gardens and flowers, I packed light. Sultry, I love their "bed head" look as well :)

I found some more from the ancient water gates, these are about 2500 years old. When going on this boat ride late evening and light raining, at first I wasn't too keen to go but later I was in aw, with all the decoration coming to light.

You did a fantastic job of capturing the lights!

I like all of them. The Emperors Army is better than I've seen in the documentaries. Yours gives a better idea of the actual size of the place. It looked smaller on some of the TV shows I've seen.

Yes...size is enormous, there are several pits and this one is only one part dug up and restored..allot is still in the ground and it was destroyed by rebels...maybe? There is still mysteries on this but it's breathtaking on the size. In the link there is one's theroy. I'll post some more later.

Hi Konrad-What everyone has said plus the Canon 7D did great. Nice sharp pictures, and for night shooting performed well! Someday I'd like to have and try at least one Canon!
