The water pipe under the sink just broke!

Has that ever happened to you? I was playing with my dog on the bed and I heard a loud bang. I ran into the kitchen and water was pouring out of the sink cabinet like a waterfall. I ran outside and turned off the water to the house. Then started on the clean up which took me over an hour. I used every towel in the house. The flood made it to the DR to the new hard wood floor. And of course this is our new remodeled kitchen. What a mess!!!

Ah, girlfriend, I feel your pain. Seems like everytime there is a problem with water at our house, hubby is out of town or on his way out of town. Yes, the pipe in the kitchen broke and I came home to water flooding the kitchen and seeping into the carpet in the dining room and the living room. Yep, DH was out of town. Only by a miracle did I know where the water shut off was. Another time, the washing machine line cracked and I had water RAINING in the downstairs bedroom. DH was on his way out of town. He cancelled THAT trip. I hear the hiss of running water, even at the neighbor's house 2 doors down, and I have to track it down because I know for a fact it's going to wind up in MY basement!!!

Ahh, Clare, what a mess!! No, thank God, that's not happened to me. Worst has been when something went wrong with my washer and it flooded my basement. I hope no permanent damage was done to anything in your house.

I would want to know about other houses nearby, whether or not the same thing happened to them (not a pipe breaking, but some version of high water, etc.). The mud may just be from slow drying, but what if the area is chronically damp? Mold will show up fairly quickly if it's going to show, so if you can wait, I would. Did they actually find the broken pipe, or just guess at it?

As a follow-up, there was standing water in the pipes. There was a clog downstream where I think the drain pipe from that attic geo unit connects in (I thought it was a vent but it is a real drain). I was away for several weeks and I think some black slime grew and clogged it. I used a snake and broke the clog about 8 feet into the pipe. I'll go pop in some bleach and geltab into the drain of that geo unit to counteract the slime growth.

I'd say it depends on where you are living. I'm in the Lehigh Valley in Pennsylvania, which is notorious for contaminated tap water, so I have both an Aquaversa and a Brita Filter for pitchers. I also try to stay away from the bottled water too because of the environmental issues. But I would find out how clean the local water is before making any major changes or paying extra money.

They should be on the hook for this, but are hoping you will fold. Just because they are initially denying it doesn't mean they are right. Be diplomatic, but persistent. They need to understand that you are not going to rollover on this.

I called DH right away and he drove the 1.5 hour drive home. He is the son and grandson of a plumber so does all the plumbing in our house. Sure save a lot of money that way! LOL

It turn out it was the plastic housing that holds the drinking water filter. It cracked from top to bottom and is always under pressure so that is why it flooded so fast. I am so happy I was home to stop it. I can imagine what would have happened if I had been at the store or running errands or happened in the middle of the night. What a nightmare that would have been!

Don't know why it cracked, but it is about 20 years old. So we will get a whole new water filter set up. At least it wasn't one of the pipes or the dishwasher.

Awww Claire, it's such a PITA when that happens! When we shifted to our new house here in Abu Dhabi, the bathroom pipe broke in the early hours of the morning, and by the time Nikita woke me up, the whole apartment was flooded.

Took a long, long time to clean it up. Plus DH keeps the temp at 18-20 deg C and I was freezing :( We'd just moved in, unpacked, and cleaned the house. Thankfully only the tp rolls and detergent box got soggy, no damage to the furniture.

Just went through it about 2 weeks ago and I still haven't gotten everything in the kitchen put back together.

No and I hope it never does!

What a mess. LOL I wouldn't have enough towels to sop up that much water. I am glad you were home too when it happened.

It's easy to have a love/hate relationship with water isn't it. It's wonderful when it's contained but just let it get loose and it can be devastating. So glad you were home to get control of the situation. Lucky to have a long list of plumbers in the family too. :)
